Re: COMICS 2011 (INTL.) - THOR US1.5m OD in OZ
Predicting Thor's US weekend from the Oz weekend is a little problematic. Based on Arch Angels prediction for Thor's full weekend (which I agree with) that normally translate to a $65-$75m weekend.
However, an Australian lead certainly helped the film here, while the Easter holidays also give it a major boost.
Conversely, Thor wont have to come up against Fast 5 OW in the US and comic book films are generally bigger in the US.
So all up - $65m+ is actually a realistic target for the domestic OW.
As for worldwide, being the first comic book film of the summer and being steeped in Norse mythology will actually help it a lot.

Fast 5 is definately the Summer opener in the US$, it'll outopen Thor for sure. I see Fast 5 to be a $85m+ candidate while Thor like your prediction should be good for $60m+. Thor however IMO will have the better legs.

Re: COMICS 2011 (INTL.) - THOR US1.5m OD in OZ
It's now Friday around 1:40pm here in Melbourne, Australia. I've just checked some of the Fast 5 and Thor sessions this afternoon and could see a trend in the following: Fast Five - Most sessions in the upcoming hour are around 60%-70% Thor - Most of the sessions in the upcoming hour are around 70%-80% Thor i think has less sessions showing per day than Fast 5, though it obviously has the bigger cinemas due to the 3D factor. Loks like its line ball for both today, Thor might actually match Fast5 or perhaps even beat it today . Though saying that, my synopsis only represents 1 cinema chain

Yep this basically sums it up, superhero movies aren't nearly as popular here as they are in the States, that will probably the big difference, another thing to consider is this really weak domestic market. Australian market has been outperforming the US for a while now. Fast Five - 76M OW and 160M Total Thor - 62M OW and 200M Total The international battle will be an interesting one too, Fast Five will increase from Furious, could be looking at 250M. I don't think Thor will dissapoint enough to lose out internationally, it should gross near 300M OS and be the biggest of GL, X-men and CA OS.

Re: COMICS 2011 (INTL.) - THOR US1.5m OD in OZ
Ok, just managed to check another big cinema chain (hoyts) here in Australia and results are about the same. Thor is definately killing Fast 5 today in terms of filling up each session, some of its 4pm sessions are more than double the sales of Fast 5 3pm sessions.

I think there are way too many films out right now to justify giving Thor more than one screen, I really hope that doesn't affect it too much, the bigger issue is the lack of 2D showings. I think it will overcome all these obstacles. Rio is also getting huge business this week, could it reach 20M total in USD, looks achievable.

Holdovers like Scream 4 and Hop will surely loose a tonne of theatres right after Easter. The market needs to be cleared to make way for the May enslaught.

Night sessions are going strong, i think Fast & Furious is starting to pull away, it's doing slightly better than Thor.

Thanks for the reports Archangel. I would expect Fast Five to pull away at night, hopefully it isn't by too much.

Re: COMICS 2011 (INTL.) - THOR US1.5m OD in OZ
Similar to yesterday, Thor seems to be just slightly ahead in terms of seats per session though both are seeing a drop from yesterday's levels. The upcoming 1pm afternoon sessions are barely 40% full.
==
Thor has apparently grossed US$3m after 2-Days of play (Thu and Fri) in Australia, looks good for a minimum of $6.5m+ 4-Day.
Fast 5 on the other hand is already at $6.8m US after 3-Days and is targeting $12m+ 5-Day.

Thor looks to be heading towards a similar Aussie Dollar opening 4 days as Iron Man. Should be about 6-7million Aussie Dollars.

HK:
Thor is still winning in opening day admissions, but The Lost Bladesman has made a comeback and has outpaced Thor in Friday admissions. Thor's Friday admissions haven't been bad so to speak but Bladesman's pace has picked up significantly.

To put it into perspective, imagibe Fast 5 opened to $115m in North America and on the same holiday weekend, Thor makes $85m.... This bodes well for $65m+ stateside for Thor.

Re: COMICS 2011 (INTL.) - THOR opens in Australia
Paramount and Marvel Studios’ Thor thundered into 25 international markets on Thursday, grossing an estimated $8 million for a total $23 million, including its Australian cume and previews. In France, the superhero pic—directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Chris Hemsworth—grossed $1.6 million, on par with Iron Man and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Including previews, the two-day French total is $2.9 million. In Germany, Thor’s opening day gross of $1.2 million outpaced Iron Man’s debut by 33%, and Wolverine, 115%. Adding in previews, Thor’s two-day take is $1.5 million. Thor’s two-day total in the U.K. is $3.9 million, up 50% from Wolverine. Grosses include previews on Monday. Thor outpaced Iron Man in Russia and Argentina. The pic opened to $1 million in Russia for a two-day total of $1.4 million, 20% ahead of Iron Man. It earned $110,000 in Argentina, 68% more than Iron Man. In Malaysia, Thor took in $260,000, the biggest non-holiday opening ever for a Marvel title. Thor opened first in Australia last weekend, where total box office revenues are now $9.7 million, 29% more than Iron Man’s first week. The superhero tentpole opens in 20 more markets Friday, bringing its total territory count to 56. Thor faces competition from Universal’s Fast Five in Germany, Russia and Spain. Fast Five, which opens Friday at the domestic box office, is off to roaring start overseas, grossing north of $35 million from only a few markets where it opened last weekend. Fast Five beat Thor in Germany, opening to $2.2 million on Thursday to command 40% of the market. Thor grossed $1.2 million in its opening day. The race was much closer in the U.K. between the two films. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/t ... lly-183679

Re: COMICS 2011 (INTL.) - THOR opens in Australia
Thor opened a week earlier to FF5 here and is packing strong numbers this weekend. Though the drops next week will be huge...so I don't expect huge gross for this. Also that a lot of casual theater going crowd have no interest here in either Thor of FF5. Though FF5 in sneak previews is going Full House

While that number is great it is already out in 56 markets...which clearly says that this is not going to be huge in OS markets....the biggest problem would be 2nd weekend hold which might not be as kind since in most of these markets Fast Five hits next week(end). I hope it still make 300m OS, it is in 3D so the legs could be good.
