Yeah, terrific move. A $35m opening and $80m total wouldn't surprise me with that kind of date.

Considering it'll be a more accessible Basterds with almost the same release, Great move. Rambo just did ok in the a similiar spot in spring. I'll say 35/90 total now. God I want to see a trailer !!!

 Re: The Expendables Predictions!
Well, the trailer has been released now...
My prediction:
Opening Weekend - $34 million
Total Gross - $79 million
However, considering it is LionsGate I could see it going the way of Kick-Ass and somewhat disappointing.

 Re: The Expendables Predictions!
This isn't going to be Kick Ass. I haven't been on as much this week, but wasn't feeling Kick-Ass as much, as its audience was fairly limited. But demographically wise The Expendables has a lot in its favor with its multicultural cast, and range of ages.

And less female appeal than a monster truck show.

 Re: The Expendables Predictions!
Yeah, Kick Ass wasn't surprising. In fact, I think it was marketed very well and it did as best as it possibly could given the concept. There just wasn't much interest outside of the internet, I didn't know a single person who wanted to see it. I kinda wanna see it now, but only because of the great reviews from critics and this site.
The Expendables, however, sells itself. It's a natural hype machine that doesn't have a hard concept to sell like Kick Ass.

 Re: The Expendables Predictions!
It definately wont end up like another Snakes on a Plane or Kick Ass. First off, the cast alone is like the antithesis of Sex in the City even if most are just b-level action heroes. I could see anywhere from a 35-45 million opening but maybe more towards the low end because its a smaller studio

I would not be surprised if it got a low-to-mid 30s OW now. The film just fits perfectly in August. Plus, the trailer should be attached to all the big action flicks in summer 2010 and the buzz should be fairly big (as long as the footage delivers on the premise). I thought it's been said that dumping a movie in August is one of the worst months to do it mainly because it generally translates to poor WOM on the movie which is why it's being dumped there to begin with????

39/90 http://chud.com/articles/articles/23418 ... Page1.htmlKICK ASS was an embarrasment folks and even CHUD is licking their wounds over the amount of fanboy internet hype that was dumped on this movie and didn't pan out with that very weak opening.. Even BOM is saying the tracking was wayyyy off for this..

It was moved as action movies have been doing very well in the August Frame (Inglorious, Bourne, AVP, FVJ, Rush Hour, GI JOE, and this particular August has no huge action films) And Kickass has nothing to do with Expendables (Kickass was unproven, anyone who saw Mystery Men knew it had a chance, and its still going to be a big success) Expendables is more relatable to Valentine's Day in Box office potential.)

I'd be shocked if it didn't pass $200 million worldwide.
Should be quite huge in Russia, I think. Will do solid numbers here too.

Rambo 4 did abysmal in Russia. It really is Arnie, Van Damme and Jackie Chan when it somes to 80s action stars popular in Russia.

But Statham is also quite popular. And I think Bruce WIllis and Arnie will figure enough in the marketing too.

Yes, he is, but not in the "80s action star" kind.

 Re: The Expendables Predictions!
According to the official website it's offically been rated R for STRONG ACTION AND BLOODY VIOLENCE THROUGHT, AND SOME LANGUAGE. It's starting to look alot more like the IB of 2010 with the hard R rating and hopefully it can be just as successful.

 Re: The Expendables Predictions!
Yeah, thank god its R, it doesn't have to be Rambo violent (Though few films are that glorious) but the R rating makes even better. The really cool thing about Arnie in it. Now that Stallone has cancelled the new Rambo in favor of another Expendables film, I have a feeling the sequel will feature Arnold and Bruce in a bigger role (Arnie will be out of office by then and Stallone has said not all of them will make it through the film. I'd love a sequel with Arnold's rival team featuring more action stars.)

 Re: The Expendables Predictions!
True and I never judge movies by there mpaa ratings, but there was just something about this movie that screamed it had to be R. I mean you don't get a HUGE cast like this together and do an 80's/90's retro tribute to all the hardcore action flicks and not go balls to the walls with it. Also I have no idea why Lionsgate was striving for it to be PG-13 when it's not like this movie's main appeal is going to be teens. It's obvious that the core demo are mostly going to be guys 25 and up( well except for me because I'm 18), but mainly it appeals to those who are old enough to see R rated flicks anyways.

They really need to get Chuck Norris and Seagal for the sequel.

I think this may have a good chance at breaking 40m OW. It probably may not even break 100m with that kind of OW as I think its going to be very frontloaded, but its OW will be big. Didn't I call $50 m + or something back in January?

Yeah, they're already showing spots during the NBA finals. Although I didn't really like the spot (didn't make it look bad ass enough, imo), at least they're actively marketing it.
