Post Re: Weekend Estimates (September 12-14)
Urgh, what I meant is that it is NOT the worst drop from #1; Vampires has that still, of course.

For anyone who's interested, these are the worst drops in ranking from weekend to weekend, irrespective of the film's position in the previous weekend, and for films with a $100k+ gross during the given weekend. I cut out the smaller grosses because there are ridiculous fluctuations at the bottom of the charts even though the changes in the dollar amounts is small.

I'd actually say Righteous Kill was more direct competition.

That's R-rated though, and past history showed the films with same ratings tend to hurt each other more; on the other hand, R could actually PG-13 films with sneak-ins.

Can you back that statement up with any actual facts? Why does Traitor have such an appeal to the urban audience? Don Cheadle is the only African American in the film. My 60+ parents saw Traitor and they are not "urban". The only African-American that I know that saw Traitor was a 60+ man and he ended up seeing Righteous Kill on Friday. The advertising I saw for Traitor and Righteous Kill was on the same shows as films like Vantage Point. The Family That Preys was not marketed on the same shows or networks.

Is this the first time ever that the top 4 films at the box office were all not from one of the major studios? 6 out of the top 10 were not from WB, BV, Uni, Fox, Par, and Sony.

Terrorist attacks tend to happen in urban areas rather than rural areas, also rural areas don't care about movies regarding international politics as much as urban areas do.

You mean ranking wise? Yeah, it's going to be hard to think of another case. It needs such a "perfect" scenario from one poor weekend to a good one with multiple openers.

It tied John Carpenter's Vampires for that:

Oct. 30-Nov. 1, 1998:
1 N John Carpenter's Vampires $9,106,497 - 1,793 - $5,078 $9,106,497 $20 1

Nov. 6-8, 1998:
8 1 John Carpenter's Vampires $3,916,254 -57.0% 1,793 - $2,184 $15,578,518 $20 2

Overture and Lionsgate, yeah, but Focus and Picturehouse are all affiliated anyway.

It dropped from #1 to #9. Not sure whether that'll be beaten anytime soon.

Good to great for all the openers. I wasn't sure Burn After Reading had the appeal to do very well, but I guess it shows again that an appealing ensemble does so much more than one star. Perfect Storm opened to 41 million

My thoughts:

Burn After Reading outperformed all expectations and has shown us two things: First is that the Coens' status has significantly risen after No Country for Old Men. Some might argue that that movie had nothing to do with Burn's success, but I think that it made the name Coen known outside of the cinephile circles and opened them to mainstream audiences more. Because even their other high-profile comedies in the past like Intolerable Cruelty and The Ladykillers didn't break out much either, opening to around $12.5 million each. Second thing is that while some individual stars are no draws on their own, packing on an all-star cast can do wonders to your film as well. The combination of Clooney, Pitt and likely also the recently Oscar-winning Swinton worked its charm. All in all, Burn after Reading managed to deliver the BY FAR biggest opening for any Coens film so far. It's also a virtual lock to become at least the Coens' second highest-grossing movie ever, beating O Brother, where art thou?. The question remains whether it can top No Country for Old Men's $74.3 million.

Another remarkable achievement of this spy comedy is that in its first weekend, it has already become the Focus Features' 9th-biggest movie to date and has delivered the studio's biggest opening weekend too. It's a lock to beat Atonement and become their #2 movie of all-time (I assume Brokeback Mountain's $83 million probably won't be reached). The question about its legs is a tricky one. On the one hand the reviews are pretty good and WoM solid. The 20+% Saturday increase indicates little frontloading too. On the other hand, it'll face 12 wide new releases within the next three weeks, four of them being comedies. This might put a dent into its screens/theatres as well as into its audiences. While the legs will be solid, I don't expect anything extraordinary, so my current projection of a $62-70 million total puts it behind NCFOM's final tally.

Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys shows that Perry is as consistent of a draw as he has ever been. However, its opening is actually the lowest of all movies Tyler Perry has actually starred in. All the others opened above $20 million. If there's one thing that Tyler Perry's films aren't known for, it'd be good legs. Earlier this year in March, Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns opened to just over $20 million and finished with only $42 million. Last year's Why Did I Get Married had better legs, though in the same season as The Family That Preys. I expect his newest offering to fall inbetween these two legs-wise because while it is certainly frontloaded, there's not much direct competition serving to the same audiences niché right now out there. I see it ending up with around $40-45 million in the bag, delivering another modest success for Perry and Lionsgate. Perry's next film will be his second sequel to Diary of a Mad Black Woman and that should pull in a very solid gross once again.

Righteous Kill's opening weekend is actually a slight disappointment in my eyes. I know that De Niro and Pacino are not what they used to be, but I thought that pairing the two stars in such a vehicle would assure an opening weekend closer to $20 million. I guess I was thinking of The Bucket List's success which also relied heavily on its main pairing. I guess given its R-rating and terrible reviews, it's still a solid start, but with a very wide 3,152 theatres release and heavy marketing, I just expected more. I expect legs to be decent, though. Even movies with very average WoM like this one can show longevity by appealing to older crowds and I believe this one does. While there are many upcoming competing films, I think none of them really appeals a lot to the same demographics. I see it finishing with around $48-53 million which is okay, all tings considered, but I can't shake off that feeling of slight disappointment.

The Women also did less than a movie with such a cast usually would, but given its distributor and horrendous reviews, I thin it succeeded. I'm sure a complete lack of female-oriented pictures in the marketplace (well, new ones) helped it a lot. Nights of Rodanthe should kill it in two weeks, but until then it'll already become a success (given its $16 million budget). It will easily pass A Prairie Home Companion and become Picturehouse's 2nd-biggest hit after Pan's Labyrinth. I expect it to take in about $26-31 million during its run.

The House Bunny's hold is splendid. I think the releases of My Best Friend's Girl and Ghost Town will hurt it, but until then it has already made enough money to be considered a very solid success. It should leave the theatres with $51 million in its pockets making it a solid hit for the studio, giving it a very good 3.5 multiplier.

Hooray for Tropic Thunder finally crossing $100 million. It sure took it long enough. As each weekend, I still contend that it had the potential to perform much better, had the market not been oversaturated by R-rated comedies prior to its release. I also think that the plethora of the releases over the next weeks will hurt it badly too, in particular the R-rated My Best Friend's Girl. Therefore, it should top out with solid, but not amazing $113 million, beating Step Brothers and Pineapple Express, but remaining well behind Get Smart.

The Dark Knight's legs just keep improving, as it delivered its best hold to date which was also the 2nd-best in the Top 12 (behind The House Bunny). I can see it continuing its smooth run throughout the month and then come back in full force during its Oscar rerelease. Since the impact of the awards buzz is hard to pinpoint at this moment, it's also difficult to project its total gross, but I'd say that it's locked for at least $530 million at this point. It should pass $525 million before the rerelease and likely get $540+ million when all is said and done.

Bangkok Dangerous crashed and burned this weekend. It's no surprise, though. The only reason it actually made some money and was #1 last weekend was the utter emptiness of the marketplace. Now it'll be lucky to even get $16 million in total with the film likely to lose a ton of screens and theatres next weekend already.

Traitor actually surprised me a lot by its weak hold this weekend. It seemed poised for solid legs,m so I'm not sure what happened. I suppose Burn After Reading and Righteous Kill completely stole its audiences. Nevertheless, it'll be the most successful Labor Day release this year and should at least break even, I suppose. Its total will be an unspectacular $25 million, though.

Death Race has proven to be a decent performer for Jason Statham. I'm sure the studio expected more of it, but it did alright afterall. I see it making $36 million by the end of its run.

Babylon A.D. got killed by the huge loss of its theatres and at latest Eagle Eye should ensure that it'll vanish from the theatres completely. I see it taking in a rather embarassing $22-23 million.

The Women was Mamma Mia!'s first direct competition ever since its release and it showed too as the film had the worst drop of its entire run so far. That was expected, though and I expect it to rebound and quietly sail off to a $145 million total, giving it a 5.2 opening-to-total multiplier. Stunning!

It's appalling that Disaster Movie actually managed to avoid a 50% drop for two weekends in a row. I think its hold this weekend is one of the most surprising things about the weekend's box-office. I mean it lost over 800 theatres. With much better WoM and less than 100 lost theatres, Traitor had a bigger drop. Still, Disaster Movie is thankfully a flop and will top out with $15 million.

Fly Me to the Moon's run is quite amazing. Yes, it started off badly, but the legs are just astounding and show how much 3D actually helps a movie's legs nowadays. HELL, it INCREASED in its 5th weekend, while having lost theatres. I suppose that having zero completely kids-oriented films in the marketplace helped as well. It should make $13 million, giving it an unexpected 6.8 multiplier.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona faced its first harsh drop this weekend as the distributor simply failed to treat it properly despite very good WoM and legs. The early DVD release won't help it much either. I think it will now finish JUST behind Match Point with around $22 million.

Journey to the Center of the Earth continues its course towards $100 million and should soon pass the mark. Its amazing hold also indicates the lack of other family-oriented films in theatres at the moment. I think it's good for a $101 million total at the moment, making it truly one of this summer's biggest surprise hits.

Pineapple Express on the other hand remains as one of the summer's biggest missed opportunities. It did very well, mind you, but the $12 million opening day simply indicated much more. It won't even make it to $90 million at this pace.

Congrats to Wall-E at passing $220 million and to Step Brothers at passing $100 million.

Mirrors is actually poised to become one of the year's bigger horror films with its $30+ million gross. Not bad for a non-sequel R-rated horror flick.

Oh and congrats to Proud American at delivering one of the most embarassing movie openings ever...

Not one of the four openers were major studio films, yet they all did solid.

I think we are going to eventually see a marketplace in which the major studios just only make big event-like films because they will have too much competition from these smaller-studios in moderate-budget films. These smaller-studios are making these moderate-budget films and pulling in good numbers, and they're going to keep doing this.

Major studios have a hard time competiting with other major studios, let alone these studios. Eventually, the competition will be too great where I feel the major studios will just let these smaller-studios handle the moderate-budget films and will just simply focus on big-budget, event films.

Isn't Focus still considered Universal? Picturehouse is Time Warner. Only Lionsgate and Overture are really independent studios not owned by a huge conglomerate. Lionsgate wants to be considered a major studio. They've said as much themselves, hence their new direction.

Go Coens! They're from Minnesota so yay! :D

They're currently filming A Serious Man here. Started not too long ago. They demanded that the film be made here instead of in Canada, which is nice of them. Seem like good guys.

Some interesting demographic data via Box Office Guru:

Quote:
Tyler Perry scored yet another hit with his latest film The Family That Preys which opened close behind in second with an estimated $18M from 2,070 locations. The Lionsgate release played in the fewest locations of any new pic and its solid $8,705 average was tops among all wide releases. The filmmaker's loyal fan following came out once again giving Perry his third impressive debut in under a year. Last March, Meet the Browns opened in second place with $20.1M and a $10,011 average while last October saw Why Did I Get Married? premiere to $21.4M and a $10,618 average. Both were Lionsgate titles released in just over 2,000 theaters. The audience was dominated by African American adult women just as with the Atlanta-based director's previous films. According to studio research, 82% of the crowd was black, 82% was over 25, and 79% was female. Perry returns once again on February 20 with his next comedy, Madea Goes to Jail.

The pairing of screen legends Robert De Niro and Al Pacino led the new action thriller Righteous Kill to a third place debut with an estimated $16.5M in ticket sales. The Overture Films release averaged a solid $5,235 from 3,152 theaters and played to an audience that was not as male-oriented as was expected. In fact, the serial killer drama's audience was slightly more female (51%) while mature adults led the way as 69% of the crowd was 25 or older.

The very high percentage of older adults seeing RK should lead to good legs since they don't usually rush out opening weekend.

I'm always amused when people state that they didn't see a single ad for a certain movie. I guess I watch a lot of TV and go to the cineplex fairly often so I see some sort of ad for every wide release out there, but with Proud American, I saw zero advertising for it. It's no surprise that this one bombed so badly.

And we have a new biggest loser. Worst opening and worst PTA for a wide release... ever. It lost to a movie rereleased and "recut" to be less interesting after it was already out on dvd. Ouch.

No one has even rated it yet on IMDB!!

BTW, I believe earlier this year it was announced that WB is actually closing down Picturehouse which is surprising considering they've been doing well recently. Mongol did very well for aforeign film, Pan's Labyrinth was a smash and I think Kit Kittredge and The Women wil both end up as solid successes.

I'm pretty sure this would be an outlier though. Tyler Perry movies have a very specific audience, more so than most urban movies. It doesn't appeal to men or younger audiences that much. The bulk of its audience comes from a demographic that's about 3% of the population. Among it's audience it must be as big as Star Wars. In a case like this outliers would reflect other factors; they are not mistakes. I think something like the demographic context comes before a correlation. So yeah, I think the major competition was from RK, and even BAR.
