Jurassic Park was sold on the fact it had dinosaurs, not that it was based on a book or was directed by Spielberg.

but there were certainly a lot of people aware of the fact that it was based on a popular book, and that it was directed by spielberg. i think spielbergs name easily sells itself.

I believe it is fair to say that any original film that breaks the opening weekend record already has a fanbase of sorts or lots of anticipation.

I think PotC2 has a good shot at $400M, but it won't reach Shrek 2. I really don't expect legs that great, and the opening won't top $130M.

Shrek is just as good of a comparison, if not better, seeing as how Shrek and it's sequel are both part of the same era of the BO.
You only think Jurassic Park is the best comparison because you think the sequel will fall.

Um, Dark Shape is right. People went for DINOSAURS.

People went for all those reasons, but a film that breaks the weekend record isn't going to grow on DVD.
And, oh right, they didn't have DVDs back then.
I have most of the data but in any case it proves that sequels have done far better in the past 5 years then they did in the 90s.

Yeah they went for Dinosaurs but the book was a #1 best seller in hardback and paperback. So was Jaws, a massive best seller book back in the 70s. Any decently made movie based on Jaws or JP was going to do ok, just like with other big novels like The Firm or Da Vinci Code. Of course Spielberg did such a good job of both that they did more than expected.

Although I still don't quite believe this, but...It looks like POTC2 really is going to smash Shrek2's opening weekend.

I doubt POTC2 will beat Shrek 2 in total, but in opening weekend it looks like POTC2 will beat Shrek 2.

I'm pretty sure it won't beat Shrek 2 at this point too, actually. It may open to like 140 mil+, but then it'll drop like a rock. I see it landing right around Sith, Spider-man 2, and Return of the King, that 370-380 mil range. That seems like the oppurtune blockbuster sequel landing point, the friendly crowd. Maybe it can gain an upper leg on them and reach 390-400 mil. But it won't reach Titanic, Star Wars, or Shrek 2, IMO.

Umm 100 crowd reports seven hours ago* $100,000 (per crowd report) +$25,000,000 (theaters not mention in crowd reports) = $35 million

excel, it's doing better at every single theater in the country then X3. I think it's quite obvious that 35m is beyond impossible.
