Movie
Friends With Money, Nicole Holofcener's third (and most impressive) feature, is a comedy about the drama that money seems to cause in our lives and relationships. Sure, not much really happens in the film. Sure, it meanders somewhat and doesn't tidy up many of its narratives. But that's a lot like life, isn't it? The strength of the film is how real all of the characters and their interactions with each other feel. Holofcener has concoted a sublime screenplay that gives all of the film's characters a chance to shine. Of course, Holofcener is helped by her tremendous cast. Joan Cusack is Franny, the only one of her friends to be wealthy, happily married and facing no significant problems. Christine (Catherine Keener) is part of a husband-wife screenwriting team, although her chilly relationship with her husband puts roadblocks in not only their professional life but also marriage. Jane (Frances McDormand) is a successful fashion designer with a metrosexual husband who all of her friends speculate is gay - but he's not, he just likes clothes. Jane has a loving relationship with her husband and is financially able, but finds herself frantically approaching a midlife crisis as she begins to become bothered by insignificant details of her life (people cutting in line at Old Navy, slow waiters, etc.). Olivia (Jennifer Aniston) is "unmarried, a pothead, and a maid." Once a relatively successful school teacher, Olivia now works cleaning other people's houses for a living, often taking samples of skin creams she likes. She continues to dwell on a previous affair with a married man, and enters a "relationship" with a jerk who demands part of her earnings even though all he does is have sex with her at the houses she cleans. Cusack is strong but underused, while Keener and McDormand excellently portray women who have started to become fed up with their routines in differing ways. As the center of the film, Jennifer Aniston delivers what is easily her strongest performance since The Good Girl, portraying Olivia as someone without money, happiness or self-esteem, settling for being a walking doormat. Overall, Friends With Money will frustrate those looking for closure to everything. What is does offer is a slice of life - a story of friendship, mainly, and the power of a dollar. A-
Silent Hill was doing very well at the theater, selling out a few times on the large 400ish-seaters. I also saw a Sentinel sellout on a theater of that size. American Dreamz didn't look to be doing very well, though; the 7:50 show on the 250-seater only looked about half full (and it was only on one screen).

I think Silent Hill is doing well at my theater since they just added a midnight show not too long ago.

Friends With Money sounds really good. I'm sure I'll like it because I loved Lovely & Amazing, though my problem with Nicole's films is they leave you wanting more. They are just too short, IMO. My theater didn't get the movie yet though, surprisingly. It's in almost 1,000 theaters this weekend and yet they don't have it, but they did just get The World's Fastest Indian .

BTW, Silent Hill Sold Out the 8:45 show (275 seater).
Let's see if anymore will sell out.
Also, the performances at Aminisoty's theater look good for my derby.

Silent Hill also sold out the 10:00 and 10:45 shows at my theater (both 575 seaters). The 11:40 will definetely sell out soon.

My theater sold out the 11:40 show of Silent Hill (275 seater), half hour early. So they are interlocking it with the 240 seater.

The Sentinel
12:30am showing, 400 seats, about 25% full.
Trailers
The Omen
Poseidon
The Da Vinci Code
Pathfinder
Movie
Decent little action film, but somewhat disappointing. The Sentinel turned out like I feared - it was so predictable. I think it's hard not to figure out the ending in the first 10 or 20 minutes of the film. But, entertaining with some good performances. B-

I don't really know. I got the sold out info from movietickets.com. I'd say they would be in the 200 - 300 range.

BTW, I went to V again today at 4:15. About 5 others besides us in the theater. Trailers were American Haunting, MI3, POTC 2, X3, and Poseidon. The theater has pretty empty overall, but it's only playing Sentinel, AD, SM4 and smaller ones. SH was across the street.

Silent Hill
10:15 PM, 50% in a 250 Seater
Trailers:
The DaVinci Code
POTC2
Waist Deep
See No Evil
Pulse
Movie: WTF is the best way to describe this movie. It had been a while since I heard loud boos at the end of a movie.
Radha Mitchell is irritating. Laurie Holden looks pretty in a police uniform and the movie sucks big time.
Boring as heck.

The 6:50 showing of Silent Hill was completely sold out in the biggest screen. 300+ seats, I think. I've never seen a film sellout on that screen and not hit at least 25 million for the weekend.
The crowd reaction was pretty bad, though. LOTS of unintentional laughter. The film seemed to lose the audience about halfway through. Alot of talking, people moving around. A couple of scattered boos at the end, too.

I am surprised anybody would like this crap. The biggest problem with the movie is that it is boring.
I don't even remember when a movie was booed by quite a few people like this one.

So what your saying is, is that this movie wasn't screened for a reason and that chances are, it will die by next weekend and be off to DVD Heaven in probably 2 weeks..

Nice to see several sellouts for Silent Hill. Good for my Derby. Movie's going to drop like a rock, though (judging by the lackuster reaction from audiences and critics).

I often find horror films that mainstream audiences hate, are often the good ones. And the ones that mainstream audiences love, are often the ones that are good.
American audiences are so use to using the same style over and over again, that when something original hits them, they run.

A big chunk of this movie resembles Ben Affleck's Phantoms. This movie is anything but original.
