Re: Japan Box-Office: 2023 Charts Updated
Tomorrow, I'll update the franchise histories that currently have a film playing, and then I'll work on the Biggest Franchise Chart that probably hasn't been updated in... 2 years?
Before that, I need to add Mario to the Biggest 11th and 12th Weekends lists since it made both of them. And I'll also add The First Slam Dunk's 32nd and 33rd weekends to the Biggest 32nd and 33rd Weekend list since both made them. I might have these up tonight.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Biggest Thirty-Second Weekends
Biggest Thirty-Second (32nd) Weekends (2000-): ¥81.4 million ($0.6 million), -15%, ¥29.65 billion ($244.9 million) - Spirited Away (2001) ¥34.4 million ($0.2 million), -03%, ¥14.77 billion ($110.7 million) - The First Slam Dunk (2022)* ¥20.3 million ($0.2 million), -04%, ¥40.02 billion ($382.4 million) - Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (2020) ¥17.2 million ($0.2 million), -06%, ¥24.84 billion ($235.1 million) - Your Name. (2016)
2-Day (Past-2022) *3-Day (2023-Present)
Biggest Thirty-Third (33rd) Weekends (2000-): ¥83.3 million ($0.6 million), +02%, ¥29.78 billion ($245.9 million) - Spirited Away (2001) ¥35.4 million ($0.3 million), +03%, ¥14.82 billion ($111.1 million) - The First Slam Dunk (2022)* ¥16.7 million ($0.2 million), -18%, ¥40.06 billion ($382.8 million) - Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (2020) ¥11.3 million ($0.1 million), -34%, ¥24.87 billion ($235.3 million) - Your Name. (2016)
2-Day (Past-2022) *3-Day (2023-Present)
The First Slam Dunk's final day in release will be August 31st, so it'll go up to 39 weekends. It will have played in wide release during all three holiday periods (New Year, Golden Week, and Obon Festival). It opened back in December, and its legs in the second half of its run have been among the best ever.
I imagine Toei will do something big during Obon Festival next month. This has become a new trend (announcing the end date and typically having a notable giveaway with it) for big films that really boosts them in their final week(s). We could see it back in the weekend top 10 sometime soon.
Kanroji, did RRR have weekend data released for its 32nd and/or 33rd weekends?

Re: Japan Box-Office: 2023 Charts Updated
And... How Do You Live? isn't holding well. It's going to lose to M:I after all. The Friday drop wasn't too alarming because Friday drops tend to be high, but Saturday is struggling to stay around 45% when it should be half that. I'd expect this to improve to 40% by end of day, but that's... bad.
It could really be looking at a 45/50% second weekend drop which is really poor and is going to make ¥10 billion very difficult much less challenging the top films of the year.
Maybe WOM is poor. Maybe having little/no marketing could be amplifying it since it has to rely on WOM so much. People can't look up anything. Another thing to consider, if it would fail to reach ¥10 billion (or barely), is that Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki's time at the top has probably passed a while back as the country has shifted demos and tastes a lot in the last ten years since they've released a (proper) film.
We'll see. But a truly big run/total isn't looking likely if it drops 40%+ this weekend. This suggests poor WOM and/or limited family appeal. (Honestly anything over 30% is rough.)

Yeah I was wondering about How Do You Live's drops.
I thought it looked bad too but I didn't want to say anything.

How do Japan's changing demographics affect how a Ghibli Miyazaki does at the box office though?

Tough drop. Would be a shame for Miyazaki's last film to go out on a whimper.

Re: Japan Box-Office: 2023 Charts Updated
Just saw that HDYL lost a lot of IMAX and all its dolby to MI7.
On one hand that definitely contributes to the admits drop, but on the other that means the gross drop will be even worse because its ATP will fall off a cliff. Some locations like Shinjuku were almost fully PLF for HDYL last week..

I remember you being worried that it might have meant poor family appeal.

Re: Japan Box-Office: 2023 Charts Updated
cannastop wrote: How do Japan's changing demographics affect how a Ghibli Miyazaki does at the box office though? In short, a declining and aging population that keeps accelerating. Japan's population has dropped by 2.8 million people between 2013-2023 (might hit 3 million by the end of 2023), the yearly gap between Miyazaki releases, and the average age has risen to 49 and is expected to hit 50 in 2025. I believe Japan is the world's second oldest population now? And it's closing in on 100,000 people over 100 to surpass the US despite just over a 1/3 of its population. The number of centenarians in Japan is expected to triple to nearly 300,000 in the next 25 years. By which point, 2050, the population is projected to only be between 95-105 million (~20-30 million less than today). As such... there are far fewer children, young people, and families, and this will only be more true as time passes. Currently, only 11% of the country is under 15 now (around 14 million people), and people over 65 account for almost 1/3 of the population now. Studio Ghibli is popular with all age groups, but like other films or franchises that were being supported or at least helped by young people and families, that's begun to slip away at a more rapid pace in the last decade or so. A lot of franchises (Pokemon - not releasing films anymore, Kamen Rider - box office way down, Yo-Kai Watch - effectively dead, and probably Disney/Pixar now too, though haven't had any actual example to judge since 2019...) have suffered in recent years for this same reason.

Well, that's a pity for Miyazaki's last movie. Would you say the high average ticket price on opening weekend was already a bad omen? I remember you being worried that it might have meant poor family appeal. Yeah, you don't want a very high ATP because that means you're probably not appealing much to kids/families. Now, as I mentioned in my last post, the number of kids/families has been declining rapidly in recent years, so there aren't as many to bank on these days which can also play a role. So it's not as much as a "lack of appeal" thing now as it is just "lack of audience." And the popularity of premium formats has made the math on this a bit more complicated. Since HDYL lost much of them this weekend though, we'll get a better idea of its "true" ATP to help judge its demographics.
