Key:
Italics = Film is still in release and being tracked.
BOLD = Film ended it's run with it's final gross and admissions released.
BLUE Highlight = New Entry

Note - If a film is not in bold and isn't in italics (e.g. Unstoppable, Andalusia), it means tracking for that film ended and the total listed isn't final yet. The totals for those films are likely to increase <1% when the final total is released.

Highlights:

A Ghost of a Chance debuts high up on the charts in only nine days. And after next weekend, it'll surely make the Top 10 among Japanese films. It's also going to give Space Battleship Yamato a run for the No.3 position of 2011.

It's debut on the charts also makes it the 30th Japanese Film this year to gross 1 billion yen or more, beating 2010's 29 films. And with The Three Musketeers also hitting 1 billion yen, making it the 21st Imported Film to do so this year, that brings the overall total of 2011 Films above 1 billion yen to 51.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes is still doing well, but it's slowing down.

Moteki becomes the 11th Japanese Film to gross 2 billion yen.

Films nearing 1 billion yen (900 million yen+):

Saturday Data:

Openers (percentage of ticket sales) vs Cowboys & Alien's opening day.

Moneyball (79.8%)
Contagion (64.5%)
Immortals (55.6%)

Holdovers, decreases compared to last Saturday.

A Ghost of a Chance (-31.6%)
Kaiji 2 (-41.5%)
1911 (-62.5%)
The Three Musketeers (-38.1%)
Suite Pretty Cure (-31.4%)
Source Code (-54.5%)
Rise of the Planet of the Apes (-72.3%)
Moteki (-35.4%)

If all the figures remain mostly the same for Sunday, the weekend is looking to be approx.:

1 (1) A Ghost of a Chance (Toho) 275-300 million yen ($3.5-3.9 million), Week 3
2 (2) Kaiji 2 (Toho) 200-225 million yen ($2.6-2.9 million), Week 2
3 (3) The Three Musketeers (Gaga) 130-155 million yen ($1.7-2 million), Week 3
4 (-) Moneyball (Sony) 105-130 million yen ($1.4-1.7 million), NEW
5 (-) Contagion (Warner Bros.) 90-100 million yen ($1.1-1.3 million), NEW
6 (-) Immortals (Toho-Towa) 80-90 million yen ($1-1.1 million), NEW

7 (4) Suite Pretty Cure? Take Back! The Heart Binding Miracles Melody? (TOEI) 80-90 million yen ($1-1.1 million), Week 3
8 (9) Moteki (Toho) 25-30 million yen ($300-350,000), Week 8
9 (8) 1911 (TOEI) 20-25 million yen ($250-300,000), Week 2
10 (5) Rise of the Planet of the Apes (Fox) 20-25 million yen ($250-300,000), Week 6

No data was available for PA3, so I'm going to leave it unranked for now. But chances are, given the huge drop for Apes, it'll rank in the Top 10.

Whoa that's huge drop for Apes. Don't know why but I observed a similar behavior in most of the markets. It does well for a few weeks and then just burns out the demand.

A Ghost of a Chance has now exceeded 1.8 million admissions and ¥2.2 billion ($29 million) after 16 days in release. More than 3 million admissions and ¥4 billion ($50 million) is still looking very doable.

Great start for Moneyball. It brought in 108,982 admissions for ¥141,828,400 ($1.8 million) over the weekend on 329 screens. Those figures don't include whatever it grossed on Friday.

Mediocre debut for Immortals. For the weekend it achieved 67,707 admissions for ¥96,537,000 ($1.3 million) on 462 screens. It also opened on a Friday, so those figures don't include that gross either.

Contagion had an average debut with 58,791 admissions for ¥77,526,000 ($1 million) on 240 screens.

Excellent once again for A Ghost of a Chance.

Japan will shortly become the biggest market for The Three Musketeers, passing up the US this coming weekend.

Baseball, and Brad Pitt, remain popular with Moneyball's very solid debut. If legs are strong it can achieve 1 billion.

Is K-On the movie talking about how the girls met or what happened after the events of season 2?

It's not in relation to the anime's plot. The movie's plot is about a field trip of some kind to the U.K. I believe.

The film opens in over 130 theaters, so perhaps a screen count near 200? And similar to the most recent films for One Piece and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, K-On will have a huge psa opening weekend.

Kaibutsu-Kun: The Movie is reportedly 27.8% ahead of SP: The Motion Picture in advance ticket sales at the same point in time (one day before release).

If that figure stays constant for the weekend, Kaibutsu-Kun (Little Monster) will have no problem clearing 500,000 admissions, and possibly 550,000+. Factor in 3D and we're looking at potentially 750/800 million yen ($10 million+) or more for the weekend based on this early report.

And with such a big opening, 5 billion yen ($65 million) looks pretty certain.

Kaibutsu-Kun: The Movie is opening on 640 screens (2D/3D), making it by far the widest local release ever by besting Ponyo on a Cliff's 481 screen count from July 2008. (EDIT; False Screen Count)

Weekend Forecast
November 26-27, 2011

1 (-) Kaibutsu-Kun: The Movie (Toho) NEW
2 (1) A Ghost of a Chance (Toho) Week 5
3 (2) Kaiji 2 (Toho) Week 4
4 (-) Happy Feet Two (Warner Bros.) NEW
5 (4) Moneyball (Sony) Week 3
6 (3) The Three Musketeers (Gaga) Week 5
7 (5) Inochi no Antoki (Shochiku) Week 2
8 (6) Suite Pretty Cure? Take Back! The Heart Binding Miracles Melody? (TOEI) Week 5
9 (-) Arthur Christmas (Sony) NEW
10 (8) Contagion (Warner Bros.) Week 3

Kaibutsu-Kun (Little Monster) remained strong in advance ticket sales before it's first showing this morning, tracking 34.6% ahead of SP: The Motion Picture (406,000 admissions); 21.5% ahead of Space Battleship Yamato (412,000 admissions); 16.7% ahead of Gantz (454,000) admissions).

All three comparisons suggest Kaibutsu-Kun is still targeting over 500,000 admissions this weekend. All three comparisons opened between ¥525-600 million ($6.5-7.5 million), but with 3D ticket prices, Kaibutsu-Kun should do ¥750-850 million ($10/11 million).

EDIT: It was actually 6.7% ahead of Gantz, which would be under a little 500,000 admissions using it as a comparison. Just to be safe I'm going to say 450-525,000 admissions or ¥650-750 million ($8.5-9.5 million) now.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2012): First Weekend (Nov. 26-27)
Biggest Opening Weekends (2-Day): November

2002, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - 2.068 billion
2003, The Matrix Revolutions - 1.627 billion
2001, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - 1.550 billion
2004, Howl's Moving Castle - 1.484 billion
2005, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - 1.327 billion
2010, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 - 937 million

Kaibutsu-Kun: The Movie won't reach the heights of the Harry Potter films (I guess it has a small shot at Deathly Hallows), Miyazaki, or the uberhyped Matrix conclusion, but it looks safe to have the highest opening weekend in November otherwise.

Edit: Changes in the earlier projection in the post above.

Weekend Data

Openers,

Kaibutsu-Kun: The Movie: Admissions - 89.7% compared to Gantz; 101.8% compared to Space Battleship Yamato; 101.7% compared to SP: The Motion Picture; 107.8% compared to A Ghost of a Chance.

All the comparisons would put Kaibutsu-Kun (Little Monster) around 425-450,000 admissions for the weekend. 69.6% of it's ticket sales have been for 3D, so it's avg. admission fee should be close to 1,500 yen ($19/20) resulting in a weekend gross of approx. 650-700 million yen ($8.5-9 million).

Happy Feet Two: 43.9% compared to Shrek Forever After.

That comparison will only give Happy Feet Two 55-60 million yen ($700/800,000).

Holdovers, drops compared to last Weekend:

A Ghost of a Chance (-39.7%), Week 5
Kaiji 2 (-41.8%), Week 4
Antoki (-40.9%), Week 2
Moneyball (-40.8%), Week 3
The Three Musketeers (-50.4%), Week 5
Suite Pretty Cure (-51.6%), Week 5
Paranormal Activity 3 (-56.2%), Week 4
Contagion (-53.6%), Week 3
Immortals (-63.6%), Week 3

If I never mentioned it before, I use the theater chains above (Toho, Warner, Shikoku, and Sunshine Cinemas) because they make up over 70% of the nationwide theater/screen count in Japan.

Toho being the largest distributor operating about 25% of the overall screen count in the country. In recent years, Toho has been monopolizing the box office with a market share of 30-35% (maybe 40% this year).
