Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (07/16-17); Charts Update
Summer Vacation effect. July 18th began summer break, but since that was a holiday, everything was down Mon.-Mon. The family/kids movies, or those with high teen appeal (basically anything that'll benefit from school being out), will be up vs last week starting from Tuesday this week.

However... We need to keep a close eye and see if COVID begins (or has begun, as this past weekend was a bit rough) to have a negative impact on some films.

Cases are at record levels, and while the hospitlizations are still relatively low, they are gradually increasing as cases go up. There have been no plans for restrictions announced, but if things would worsen and begin to strain the medical system (the big concern), we could see some measures make a return. Such as theaters closing by 8pm, for instance.

Japan did great handling the early COVID waves as it wasn't as contagious and simple pracitices (mask wearing, social distancing, etc.) kept their numbers very low, but these recent, more contagious variants are easily spreadable in a very crowded country like Japan. At least they aren't as serious.

Why were things down week over week from last Tuesday though? Shouldn't it have been up if they were already on holiday?

They've been available, I just haven't had the time to dedicate to posting them yet this week. I have a couple hours early tomorrow that are free, so I'll use that time to get them up.

As for why films were down Tues.-to-Tues., well, not everything was down. Minions was up around 70% versus last week. And many of the other younger skew films (which includes those with teen/young adult appeal) had excellent single-digit sort of holds or were stable. So, seems pretty normal to me. Same with Wednesday's increases/decreases versus last week, too.

Super Broly was sure the peak of Dragon Ball box office, and sure the series is front-loaded at the Japanese box office, and I understand and respect there decision to go in a computer animated direction for Super Hero, but judging by its box office results in Japan I think it was not a good idea. I will still see this movie, and maybe the movie do a bit better outside Japan, but I have a feeling that maybe fans overseas might not like the direction toward computer animation for Super Hero too.

What's the highest-grossing Chinese film in Japan this year (and all-time would be interesting to know)? Do Chinese films even get released in Japan? And I'm talking China Mainland, not Hong Kong films, although if those are the only ones to get a release, I'd be interested to know what the sort of gross potential is for them.

Last Year, White Snake grossed ¥300M in Japan.

This year, not really interesting but forgotten the title sound like "What I am" mobilised 12,346 visitors in entire run.

Talking about Hong Kong, Raging Fire was interesting, mobilised 8,998 visitors only on two locations.

This Year "Baby Broker" is the biggest Korean Title in Japan with ¥800M.

Some Indian Title will start releasing from Sep, among with "RRR" have a good potential of hitting some ¥200M-¥300M

Outside this nothing significant release among Imported of course keeping docs / bio aside running in mini theater

Also not really a friendly market for Chinese/Cantonese Title. Chinese Distributor are trying to seal deal with Distributor here but their Nationwide release remain less than 30 sites.

So, at this moment, English Domains the Imported Film market, next Korean then....

Thanks. I thought as much. Is White Snake that 2019 animated movie? Ouch. ¥300 million yen is, like, what, $2 million USD. Good ol', Japanese. :D

This is most interesting. That top five are Hong Kong-China co-productions for the most part, I believe. But even still, they are from a time when the world believed China to be on a progressive path of opening up and looking to be part of the international community. Nowadays, as you alluded to, films won't even get the screens required to do good business. It says something that the top five highest-grossing Chinese films in Japan are all connected to huge international stars; Jet Li, Jackie Chan, or John Woo. The China of the last 5-10 years has found it impossible to export its nationalism and xenophobia.

Thanks for compiling that data

I'll be back to posting regularly again soon, I hope. Very busy with work this past week and never really found the dedicated couple hours needed to post updates.

I'll likely combine last weekend's and thus weekend's Actuals in the same update.

I haven't looked up Jurassic World 3's reported numbers yet, but judging by the usual locations (still minus Aeon though...), its debut looks to be fairly strong. Don't think it came near the second film, but might be around 75-80% of its start and just cracked ¥1 billion over the weekend? And is so, would be aiming for about ¥7 billion (about $50 million) for those watching its WW numbers to see if it breaks $1 billion. Going to assume Japan will add just enough to get it there if everywhere else can add ~$10 million more.

And here are Jurassic World: Dominion's debut numbers:

OW: ¥939,016,000 ($7.1 million) / 603,015
3-Day: ¥1,295,123,510 ($9.7 million) / 840,487

Versus Fallen Kingdom: The OW was down 23% (revenue) / 27% (admissions), while the 3-Day Opening was down a more respectable 12% (revenue) / 16% (admissions).

A little "disappointing" it missed ¥1 billion over the weekend frame, but all in all, it's still a pretty strong debut and the biggest Hollywood OW/3-Day since 2019. It'll be aiming for ¥7 billion (~$50-55 million) / 4.5-5 million admissions, down maybe 15% or so versus its predecessor if it gets there. Should add just enough from Japan to reach $1 billion worldwide at the box-office.

Yeah, I can update that today (soon-ish). Calls for an update not just for Titanic, but because Top Gun: Maverick also cracked the list (cut off is a 12x) this week. And The Last Ten Years from this past March will also be added to the list.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Jurassic World 3 Debut; Top Gun hits ¥
Thanks for Updating it. You can add Top Gun (1986) too as Comparison. It opened with ¥447,430,600. I will try to search for more pre-Titanic Numbers too like Jaws, ET to make it more fun
