Post Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Actuals
Very good numbers all around. Even Kamen Rider had a drop under 40%. Excellent for The Tree Of Life. Pretty awesome that only holdovers released last week are the only films to drop in the top 10.

Do you have any data on the biggest Obon weekends?

Edit: The Amazing Spider-Man has been confirmed for June 30! Japan will get Spider-Man first and 1 weekend before it rolls out worldwide starting on Tuesday (July 3).

Kamen Rider dropping below 40% was probably the most surprising result last weekend.

Not sure off-hand what the biggest Obon Weekend(s) is, but it possibly could have been last year with Toy Story 3, Arrietty, Bayside Shakedown 3, Pokemon 13, and Inception. I'll do some research and post a Top 3 or something later.

Japan has been The Spider-Man franchise best oversea market, with the movies having all grossed over 6 billion yen ($60 million at all their times in release, though they would all be over $80 million with the current exchange rate) each, so it's pretty cool they get the reboot first. I expect The Amazing Spider-Man to drop off a bit from the previous films (unless its in 3D?), but it should still do really well.

I forgot to post this yesterday,

上半期に洋画・邦画含めて1位を獲得したのはジョニー・デップ主演の人気シリーズ最新作『パイレーツ・オブ・カリビアン/生命(いのち)の泉』で、最終興収は推定で90億円以上。

http://movies.yahoo.co.jp/m2?ty=nd&id=2 ... 00026-flix

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has grossed 9 billion yen ($116 million).

That's most likely it's final total. Up about 200 million yen ($2.6 million) from it's last official update two weeks ago. I'll include the new total in next week's charts.

It will be in 3D so it could become another 6 billion yen grosser. Pretty awesome that Japan gets a movie first and not last which happens with so many movies nowadays.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Forecast
August 20-21, 2011
Weekend Forecast

1 (1) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (Warner Bros.) 215 million yen ($2.8 million), Week 6
2 (N) Kung Fu Panda 2 (Paramount) 200 million yen ($2.6 million), NEW
3 (2) Transformers: Dark of the Moon (Paramount) 185 million yen ($2.4 million), Week 4
4 (4) From Kokuriko Hill (Toho) 135 million yen ($1.8 million), Week 6
5 (3) Cars 2 (Walt Disney) 130 million yen ($1.7 million), Week 4
6 (5) Kamen Rider OOO Wonderful: The Shogun and the 21 Core Medals / Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger the Movie: The Flying Ghost Ship DOUBLE FEATURE (TOEI) 120 million yen ($1.5 million), Week 3
7 (6) Pokemon the Movie: Best Wishes (Toho) 100 million yen ($1.3 million), Week 6
8 (N) Usagi Drop (School Gate) 90 million yen ($1.1 million), NEW
9 (7) Tree of Life (Walt Disney) 65 million yen ($850,000), Week 2
10 (N) Shanghai (Gaga) 55 million yen ($725,000), NEW

If Kung Fu Panda 2 wasn't opening on Friday, it probably would win the weekend. It still may because drops this weekend will be pretty steep across the board, but the Friday release puts it at a small disadvantage.

Predicted Totals (as of August 21st):

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2: 7.9/8.0 billion yen ($103/104 million); 5.5-5.6 million admissions. [38 Days in Release]
Transformers: Dark of the Moon: 3.0/3.1 billion yen ($39/40 million); 2.0/2.1 million admissions. [24 Days in Release]
From Kokuriko Hill: 3.2/3.3 billion yen ($42/43 million); 2.5/2.6 million admissions. [37 Days in Release]

If Transformers: Dark of the Moon is any indication, I may have underestimated the effect Obon Festival had in the beginning of this week in my predicted totals after this weekend.

http://www.cinematopics.com/cinema/news ... _seq=12856

As of August 17th, Dark of the Moon has grossed 3,086,937,600 yen ($40.3 million), 85.2% 3D share, after 20 days in release.

Wow that's pretty good number. I guess with Obon festival's help we can see $15m more from Japan itself or maybe slightly more for $60m total.

Saturday Data compared to last Saturday,

Openers,

KFP2 (80.5%) of Cars 2 last Saturday (8/13) = approx. 115 million yen ($1.5 million) Saturday.

I have data on the other openers, too, but don't have the time to post them (will tonight).

Holdovers,

Harry Potter 7.2 (-38.1%)
Transformers 3 (-47.8%)
Cars 2 (-43.2%)
From Kokuriko Hill (-26.4%)
Pokemon 14 (-39.6%)
Kamen Rider (-46.1%)
Tree of Life (-41.8%)

I'll update with projected weekend grosses tonight.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Forecast
Based on the Saturday Data from the Usual Locations, here is how the weekend is shaping up:

1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2: 235/245 million yen ($3/3.2 million), Week 6
2. Kung Fu Panda 2: 195/205 million yen ($2.5/2.6 million), NEW
3. Transformers: Dark of the Moon: 190/195 million yen ($2.4/2.5 million), Week 4
4. From Kokuriko Hill: 160/165 million yen ($2.0/2.1 million), Week 6
5. Cars 2: 135/140 million yen ($1.7/1.8 million), Week 4
6. Kamen Rider OOO Wonderful: The Shogun and the 21 Core Medals / Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger the Movie: The Flying Ghost Ship DOUBLE FEATURE: 115/120 million yen ($1.4/1.5 million), Week 3
7. Pokemon the Movie: Best Wishes: 105/110 million yen ($1.3/1.4 million), Week 6
8. Usagi Drop: 100/105 million yen ($1.2/1.3 million), NEW
9. Tree of Life: 60/65 million yen ($775-850,000), Week 2
10. Kochikame the Movie: Blockade Kachidoki Bridge!: 50/55 million yen ($650-725,000), Week 3

Shanghai's data is a little confusing. It outpeformed Tree of Life (last weekend) by 35%, but Tree of Life opened on a Friday. So Shanghai is on track for about 100 million yen ($1.2/1.3 million) this weekend (7-9th), or 150 million yen ($1.9/2 million) (5th).

Hop is only looking at a 40/45 million yen ($500-575,000) opening.

No, Sundays are usually bigger than Saturday. It probably won't be this weekend with Obon last week though.

I made a mistake in my post this morning on Kung Fu Panda 2. Saturday should be about 95/100 million yen ($1.2/1.3 million), not 115 million yen.

Wasn't Shanghai released last year? I remember it was released last year in Summer and got lost somewhere. The movie as such was nothing great, but this number is impressive given the theater count.

Highlights:

Harry Potter 7.2 clears 8 billion yen.
Pokemon 14 becomes the 2nd biggest Japanese release of the year, 1st in admissions.
From Kokuriko Hill and Transformers 3 easily clear 3 billion yen.
Cars 2 passes 2 billion yen.
Kamen Rider/Sentai Gokaiger becomes the third Kamen Rider film to hit 1 billion yen in just this year alone.

Only films that have grossed 1 billion yen or more are included.

Films nearing 1 billion yen:
Gokaiger Goseiger Super Sentai 199 Hero Great Battle (~900 million)
What If a Female Manager of a High School Baseball Team Read Drunker's "Management"? (~900 million)

The estimated totals are definitely low once again this week. Kokuriko Hill came in much, much higher. Estimates have been pretty low the past several weeks for some reason.

From Kokuriko Hill: 3,453,910,805 ($45.25 million); 2,750,462 million admissions. [37 Days in Release]

Ghibli's latest had a disappointing start six weeks ago, but it's been displaying incredible legs this month. It actually increased this last week over last week's full Obon Festival week.

Weekend Gross / Total Gross
387,537,657 yen ($4.8 million)
262,415,242 yen ($3.3 million) / 1,151,211,737 yen ($14.7 million) (+764 million yen)
239,292,527 yen ($3.1 million) / 1,737,505,999 yen ($21.5 million) (+586 million yen)
182,228,803 yen ($2.4 million) / 2,251,096,695 yen ($29.2 million) (+514 million yen)
230,943,912 yen ($3.0 million) / 2,848,930,405 yen ($37.0 million) (+598 million yen)
? (?) / 3,453,910,805 yen ($45.3 million) (+604 million)

Looks like it's going to finish with 4.3-4.5 billion yen ($56-59 million) now.

Key:

BOLD = Final Total.

Note 1 - If a film is not in bold, and doesn't have days in release (e.g. Unstoppable), it means tracking for that film ended and the total listed isn't final yet. The totals for those films are likely to increase <1% when the final total is released.

Highlights:

Harry Potter 7.2 clears 8 billion yen, and becomes the most attended film of the year.
Pokemon 14 becomes the 2nd biggest Japanese grosser of the year, though 1st in admissions.
From Kokuriko Hill and Transformers 3 easily clear 3 billion yen, aiming for 4 billion yen now.
Cars 2 nears 2.5 billion yen.

Nintama Rantarou Live Action Movie! (~832 million)
