Yes. 2 pm numbers yesterday were 102,914 without the independents and 110,119 with the independents so that 106k number a little before 2 pm would obviously include them.

Not a very good sunday drop considering RoF only went -11% but this one did -30%. Still enough to get the weekend at #1 I guess. It was wise to opt into saturday release otherwise top gun was absolutely going to take it.

Yeah why has it dropped off so bad compared to Resurrection F?

Maybe is just more frontloaded than previous, or mixed reception having in mind that in PV the movie looked that they focused on not the most appealing characters and a diferent kind of animation.
Also I see a little steeper fall in TGM in sunday compared to saturday's.

I'd link its lower opening to the 3D/CGI animation. Almost every film that goes this route disappoints in some way, with very, very few exceptions. Japanese audiences, and fans of long running franchises like Dragon Ball that are 2D, just don't like 3D animation.

That said... It's still a good opening and took the #1 spot. I'd argue the franchise peaked between 2015-2018 though when Resurrection F and Broly released as the anime was seeing a revival through Super.

And it might not be as frontloaded as the Sun. drop suggests. It'll be frontloaded since the franchise itself is frontloaded, but this Sunday was lackluster all around. But it also has no holiday support until sixth week onward, unlike the last three which had Spring Break, Golden Week, and New Year just a week or two after opening.

The opening will probably be around Battle of Gods, thinking ~¥650/675 million, so good call there, JustLurking.

That seems like an opening close to flop territory, honestly. I guess we'll have to wait for the next movie to know if Dragon Ball really is heading to the Japanese cemetery of dead movie franchises or if it was just a one time thing due to various factors (3D, movie being delayed, no holiday support, etc).

If it opens below ¥700 million then it's not getting to ¥3 billion is it?

What time will we get estimates?

I believe 4 is basically the minimum multiplier in Japan. Such a multiplier following a 650-675 million yen opening gets it to 2.6-2.7 billion yen. Maybe Toei will pull something out of their sleeve to get it to 3 billion.

This isn't a flop. It's just coming back down from the peak. Expecting similar numbers as F and Broly was setting the bar too high. There was a franchise boom going on in those years (all new anime, new manga, new games, etc.), and both featured big fan favorites (Frieza and Broly).

Depending on where it comes in, it'll also be the 5th/6th biggest OW ever in June, and the biggest OW for any animated film in June. June isn't a big month for openings (it's one of the weakest months overall), but that's still impressive.

Official estimates will come out tomorrow around noon (Japan time), so around 13/14 hours from now. I can provide an estimate myself here soon-ish.

¥3 billion will be a bit tough with no holidays. Battle of Gods finished with ¥2.99 billion with Spring Break (and Golden Week later in its run), so that might be the high-end.

I think broly had too many things going right for a repeat anyway. Considering it's a 3DCG film I think it went well enough, if you asked me a month ago I probably would've guessed lower.

Can Super Hero compare to Shin Ultraman? That surpassed ¥3 billion.

Dragon Ball is a pretty frontloaded franchise. We shouldn't see a multiplier go much above 4/4.5, so an expected range should be like ~¥2.7-3.1 billion. So, ¥3 billion is possible, though it'll be tough based on I'm estimating its opening to be. Definitely doesn't help that it has zero holiday support until July 18th. But, can't really be helped since they were forced to delay the film from April to June due to being hacked.

I'm thinking 700M from IMAX giving a bit of an atp bump and 2.5-2.6b total.

Yeah the reception could be due to it declining from its revival peak and slight part due to CGI. But even if it does 2.7B and above that's already a success.

I think it being CGI affects it a lot more in overseas markets than it would in Japan. It might be the lowest grossing DBS movie or at least a heavy decline from Broly WW.
