Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (05/28-29); Charts Update
It would have been fine either way, I believe. Towa Pictures (subsidiary of Toho-Towa (who release Universal Pictures' films)) were given distribution rights to Paramount releases in Japan back in 2016 or 2017. So it won't go to streaming. Both Towa Pictures and Toho-Towa are subsidiaries of Toho, Japan's biggest distributor who also own and operate the busiest theater chain (Toho Cinemas) in the country.
Since they don't release them on streaming while in theaters, Universal and Paramount films have been able to perform well in the market, unlike Disney which still distribute their own films in the market and where Disney+ is available. Warner Bros. has seen mixed results. They have a strong local film studio and their local films largely perform well, but their Hollywood slate haven't performed nearly as well in recent years (FB3 aside, which did really well).

Wow. What was the last big opener (> 500 million) with such a great 2nd weekend hold? Demon Slayer?

Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (05/28-29); Charts Update
Yes, it's the first film to score a sub-10% second weekend hold since Demon Slayer (as far as ¥500 million+ openers go).
It's going to be interesting to see how theaters schedule it with Dragon Ball Super this weekend. DBS will, probably, open at #1 (though TGM won't make it easy), so it'd make sense for theaters to give it the largest screen, at least for its opening weekend. But they won't want to go all-out and remove TGM from all the big screens either. I expect we'll see a split of sorts. Toho Cinemas will probably favor TGM still (since it's one of their own films through their subsidiary distributor), while most other chains will favor DBS.

>Top Gun: Maverick achieved an incredible second weekend hold to remain atop the box-office, selling an additional 471,261 admissions in its sophomore frame, bringing its ten-day admissions up to 1,883,940. With its very strong weekdays, and now very strong weekend hold, we can expect big things here. It's far too early to make any final projections, but with the data we have, it's likely safe to expect up to ¥7-8 billion ($55-60 million+) and possibly 5 million+ admissions. Check back next week, and the week after next, and the week after that, to get a slightly closer final projection as I suspect we'll be in for a very long run here.
>Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island debuts in second place, selling 195,313 admissions across 184 screens over its 3-day opening weekend. I haven't come across its 2-day admissions, so those will be estimated on the 2022 Opening Weekend Chart until (or if) they become available. I don't know if this one will be as leggy as last year's release (it was being pushed a lot), so it's hard to predict, its opening is high enough to at least get it above ¥1 billion, but we can likely expect much more.
>Shin Ultraman delivers another "good" hold, but since it's failed to really post any great ones, it won't finish quite as high as its breakout opening may have suggested. Still, it's on track to reach ¥4 billion ($30 million+), which is great and I believe above expectations (even if ¥5/6 billion was being thrown around before/after it opened).
>The Quintessential Quintuplets Movie exceeded ¥1 billion over its third weekend of release. I haven't discussed this one, but it's certainly a big hit for Pony Canyon (they're a small distributor that very rarely see a film get close to ¥1 billion, much less over the mark). I have a feeling (it might even be announced already) that we'll see some giveaways or other events for this one since it has a large and loyal enough fanbase to support them, so I think we'll see it around longer than expected. Should definitely do ¥1.5 billion, but I can see it approach/hit ¥2 billion with some events.
>Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween has been holding on quite well after its initial Golden Week drop, and whereas ¥9 billion was looking unlikely (or very difficult), it's very likely again now. Its admissions are up to 6,170,911. It already opened across every premium format, so I don't see it getting a late-run boost to push it the extra little bit it'd need to outgross Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire (¥9.37 billion) to become the highest-grossing film in the franchise, but... there's an opening here for Toho to make it a possibility unless it suddenly begins to drop heavy.
>The Way of the Househusband: The Movie hasn't had its weekend actual released yet (that I've seen), so it's estimated, but its 3-day above is accurate, having sold 100,289 admissions on 347 screens. Not reaching ¥100 million over the weekend frame itself is a bit disappointing, but this is an "okay" result.

Yes for Hollywood ༎ຶ‿༎ຶ
Sorry it was a speed-post

Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (06/04-05); Charts Update
You're good. Just wanted to clarify for readers.
And it is exciting. It'll probably be close to outgrossing No Way Home after Sunday, and then it'll surpass Fantastic Beasts 3 perhaps by the following weekend (~June 17th).
We've already had seven ¥5 billion earners since 2020, and likely eight when the Arashi anniversary tour finally gets there (still playing), but none have been from Hollywood. So, Top Gun Maverick becoming the first Hollywood film to achieve blockbuster status in all that time is a big accomplishment.

Just to show how BAD Hollywood has performed in Japan since 2020, here is the list of the Highest Grossing Films in Japan since 2020 that have earned above ¥3 billion (considered the "hit" mark). They've only had 3 films get above this mark, and none have yet to achieve the blockbuster milestone of ¥5 billion.
So, when Top Gun: Maverick does get to ¥5 billion (and beyond), it's going to be a very big deal and key moment for them this decade.

01. ¥40.43 billion ($386.1 million) / 29.25 million - Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (Toho/Aniplex, 2020) #1 All-Time 02. ¥13.75 billion ($122.3 million) / 9.81 million - Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (Toho, 2021) #14 All-Time 03. ¥10.28 billion ($94.0 million) / 6.72 million - Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time (Toho/Toei/Khara, 2021) #36 All-Time 04. ¥8.61 billion ($67.1 million) / 6.17 million - Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween (Toho, 2022) *8 Weeks in Release* #65 All-Time 05. ¥7.65 billion ($70.5 million) / 5.48 million - Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet (Toho, 2021) #83 All-Time 06. ¥6.60 billion ($60.0 million) / 4.74 million - Belle (Toho, 2021) 07. ¥5.37 billion ($50.5 million) / 4.23 million - From Today, It's My Turn! Pokemon 1999 is the only Japanese Film to deliver 100K+ attendees /₺200K in Week 1. By Mobilization, it is highest grossing Japanese film in Turkey. A record never defeated since last 21 years. After 21 years, Jujutsu Kaisen Movie 0 finally defeated it in gross but far behind in mobilization

Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (06/04-05); Charts Update
Yeah, that's pretty nuts.
The very little inflation in Japan since ~1993 is one of the biggest reasons I enjoy tracking the Japanese box-office. Being able to largely compare any film between 1993-2022 without accounting for inflation (or accounting very little) is amazing. If you do compare the earliest years and the later years of this range, only minor inflation has to be taken into account.
The average movie ticket price is only about 5% higher in 2022 than it was in 1993. You'd be able to almost directly compare Jurassic Park and Jurassic World: Dominion despite the 29 year gap.
Only 5 years (1997, 2008, 2014, 2018) in the past 29 have seen annual inflation rates increases over 1% (only 2014 broke 2%). The only year general movie tickets increased nationwide since 1993 was in 2014 (only year the inflation rate broke 2% at 2.8%).
Now, that *might* be changing soon-ish with this exchange rate situation and the impact higher imports (food inflation is up the most at 4%) have had this year, but even with all that, this year's inflation jump is "only" 2.5% overall as of May. That's not much for most countries, but is quite high in Japan as it's the second highest ever in the past 29 years if it sticks for the whole year. It's expected by the BOJ to remain at least above 2% for the rest of the year.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Dragon Ball Box Office History
The 21st Dragon Ball movie, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, opens this weekend, so here's a look back at its Box-Office History:
Dragon Ball Box-Office History (1986-):
Opening Weekends: ¥960.6 million ($8.1 million) / 715,727 - Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F (2015) ¥812.7 million ($7.2 million) / 639,000 - Dragon Ball Super: Broly (2018) ¥683.9 million ($7.3 million) / 561,098 - Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (2013)
Totals: ¥4.00 billion ($36.0 million) / 3.07 million - Dragon Ball Super: Broly (2018) ¥3.74 billion ($31.1 million) / 2.81 million - Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F (2015) ¥2.99 billion ($31.1 million) / 2.34 million - Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (2013) ¥2.48 billion ($19.2 million) - Dragon Ball Z: The Return of Cooler (1992) ¥2.35 billion ($18.9 million) - Dragon Ball Z: Super Android 13 (1992) ¥2.24 billion ($22.2 million) - Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Second Coming (1994) ¥2.20 billion ($16.2 million) - Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge (1991) ¥2.12 billion ($20.4 million) - Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan (1993) ¥2.05 billion ($18.7 million) - Dragon Ball Z: Bojack Unbound (1993) ¥2.05 billion ($14.9 million) - Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug (1991) ¥1.98 billion ($22.7 million) - Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn (1995) ¥1.75 billion ($18.0 million) - Dragon Ball Z: Bio-Broly (1994) ¥1.55 billion ($10.3 million) - Dragon Ball Z: The World's Strongest (1990) ¥1.24 billion ($9.6 million) - Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone (1989) ¥1.24 billion ($8.4 million) - Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might (1990) ¥1.22 billion ($6.8 million) - Dragon Ball: Curse of the Blood Rubies (1986) ¥1.22 billion ($8.0 million) - Dragon Ball: Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle (1987) ¥1.10 billion ($12.2 million) - Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon (1995) ¥1.00 billion ($7.8 million) - Dragon Ball: Mystical Adventure (1988) Sub-¥1 billion (~$8/9 million) - Dragon Ball Z: The Path to Power (1996)
And the (Eng. Sub) Trailer for the new film:
This is the first Dragon Ball film to primarily use 3D animation, so it'll be interesting to see how fans react to it at the box-office. Given the praise Broly's animation received, it's certainly odd to move to 3D animation with this one, but perhaps they just wanted to change things up? If you Dragon Ball fans here know, please share! There are a few exceptions, but usually 3D animated films in traditional animation franchises (or even studios) are poorly received and disappoint.

Maybe just a matter of who they had available I guess, some guys from broly have been moved to one piece (the anime, not the film) iirc. Definitely cheaper for them this way as well.
Gave a look around and it seems like some big toho theaters aren't even putting it out this weekend, PS in general looks ehh. But we'll see. Not a prediction but wouldn't be too surprised if it only did around battle of gods numbers, if that happened top gun might even hold #1 weekend lol. That'd probably mean 5 weekends at #1 since june is pretty barren I think.

I'm hoping TGM can keep the #1 spot this weekend if only because it would mean its chances of having a Bohemian Rhapsody like run will have increased significantly.

If it wasn't opening on the traditional Saturday, I'd be a little concerned about its chances at #1 since more fan-driven releases like this can burn off a little demand on Friday ahead of the weekend. But the Saturday opening should allow it to claim the top spot.

Um, am I reading something wrong? Mimorin is showing 454k for me, not 604k.
Ah nvm, I get it, you added it with the one on #4, but that seems to be a re-release of broly, not super hero shows?

Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (06/04-05); Charts Update
I believe the fourth ranked film (which says Broly) is it, too. 165 theaters is way too low (about 100 less than normal) when its standard theater count is 371 (about as high as a count goes). The 95 locations (and another 150k seats) that the Broly film has in fourth place takes it up to 260, which should be about the right number.
I think something happened with the counts due to a bug with Aeon Cinemas. There was a mistake with yesterday's admissions due to Aeon Cinemas that was corrected in the evening, so that same mistake probably messed up the seating counts for Saturday, too.
We'll know for sure this evening with Sunday's counts come out.

Yeah I guess it doesn't make sense for a broly re release to have 150k (!!) seats, very weird mistake to make though.
