Re: HK 12/31 THU: Ip Man 3 crosses 4m; Star Wars 7 nears 8.5
Broadway's Cinematheque has cut showings for Ten Years down to three daily shows from six. Out of the three daily shows, only one is open for advance ticketing. The other two are for walk-ins only. Strange move. While chains like UA, MCL, and Golden Harvest started adding shows for the film, Broadway has cut back the number of showings and made it harder to buy tickets.

Very good hold for Ip Man 3. It was the only non-animated fully released wide movie to fall less than 10% on Sunday. Sherlock is very frontloaded. Good hold for Star Wars 7 though Saturday/Sunday saw more 2D showtimes. Anniversary slid hard on Sunday. Animated releases all saw good daily holds on Sunday. Joy is a disaster.

Ip Man 3 had a really strong weekend despite the weird weekend configuration with Friday being the main holiday and Saturday/Sunday depressed with Sherlock opening to boot. Next weekend is a killer weekend for all films. I will say that Ip Man 3 will fall 50% next weekend courtesy of another weird weekend with Thursday openers, The Revenant out on Friday, the loss of the Friday holiday but the weaker Saturday/Sunday from this week. Star Wars 7 saw a decent but unspectacular weekend. While its holiday holds were less than desired, it found itself rebounding on Saturday/Sunday. It won't matter how well it's been holding on non-holidays because this weekend is a huge stumbling block for many films. In 2010, even the mighty Avatar fell a whopping 42% while every other holdover declined 55% or more. With the way it's been holding so far, I expect a 70-75% decline for Star Wars 7 this weekend. Overall, a good weekend for Anniversary though its daily drops are a concern. It has already surpassed the original film, Marriage with a Fool, but next weekend should see it take in one of the biggest falls of any holdover with no holiday to prop up its gross and mixed WOM. Sherlock had a good opening but it was very frontloaded. I could see it falling over 60% next weekend despite Thursday/Friday added in. The Peanuts Movie had an OK decline. With strong WOM, this could buck the heavy decrease animated releases usually get next weekend but we will need to see how theaters schedule their animated films next weekend. December 24 - January 3 Estimates1. Ip Man 3 - between $4,666,203-$4,743,544/457,000 admissions 2. Star Wars: The Force Awakens - between $4,575,973-$4,653,313/295,000 admissions 3. The Peanuts Movie - between $1,508,137-$1,546,807/119,000 admissions 4. Anniversary - between $1,443,687-$1,482,357/142,000 admissions 5. The Little Prince - between $1,263,226-$1,289,006/112,000 admissions 6. Yo-Kai Watch - between $451,152-$489,822/46,000 admissions Look at the difference between gross and admissions for Ip Man 3/Star Wars 7. Ip Man 3 won the holiday period but it took 150,000+ admissions to do so. This really has a lot to do with IMAX and how Star Wars 7's IMAX record won't be broken for a while until some other studio comes in and sets outrageous prices to beat it. Another good example of 3D vs 2D would be Peanuts vs. Little Prince. Both are 3D movies but theaters shunned 3D for 2D with The Little Prince and Peanuts ended up more than $200,000 ahead of Little Prince with only a 7,000 admissions gap from more showings in 3D. Anniversary had better admissions than the 2 animated releases despite opening a week later. Perhaps being the only romantic release of the season led many to watch it and also due to the original's goodwill being carried over.

This is the first Yo-Kai Watch film, right?
How is it performing compared to other Japanese anime, such as Doraemon or Pokemon?

How is it performing compared to other Japanese anime, such as Doraemon or Pokemon? Yes, it's the first film. It's performing like standard Doraemon summer fare. Opening weekend between $250,000-$300,000 then it falls off after that. I think it could have done slightly better because it's been the only big Japanese anime released in 4-5 months and it had higher ticket prices than all of the other yearly Doraemon summer films but it did open against Peanuts/Little Prince and it still pulled in those numbers. It's one of those films that could be argued for or against and both sides have valid points. Personally though, despite being a self starter to the franchise, I think a sizable amount of kids were going to watch it regardless if it had direct competition on opening weekend. It had more admissions on opening weekend than Doraemon: Nobita and the Space Heroes this summer which is good but it also saw a much bigger decline this weekend with a new Japanese anime released but that one flopped so there wasn't that much overlap in competition this weekend.

Actuals
1. Ip Man 3 (葉問3) - $5,222,834 ($40,464,056 HK) 2. Star Wars 7 (星球大戰 : 原力覺醒) - $9,378,883 ($72,663,155 HK)
Ip Man 3 will pass Ip Man 2 on Wednesday and Little Big Master on Friday or Saturday while Star Wars 7 will pass 10m by next week barring a complete meltdown (ex. -90% collapse) this weekend.

Re: HK 12/31: Ip Man 3 seizes #1 from Star Wars 7 with good
Early Thursday schedules
None of the openers will make much of a dent this weekend. Daddy's Home/Secret in Their Eyes are going wide. Holdovers Sherlock and Ip Man 3 will fight for the biggest screen at most places. Star Wars 7 is cut to half day showtimes or sent to the smallest screen or both. Anniversary locks down half day showtimes while the 2 Hollywood releases will see its movie exit from most theaters this week.
The Revenant looks to be a semi-wide to wide release on Friday.

As far as inflation-adjusted gross goes, Jurassic Park should rank #3 behind Titanic and Avatar. HK films during the prime years would move up the chart. For example, All's Well, Ends Well (HK$48,992,188 in 1992) should at least place inside top 10. I remember ticket price for a regular 2D movie in the mid-1990's was around HK$50. Now it is at least $85.

Re: HK 12/31: Ip Man 3 seizes #1 from Star Wars 7 with good
According to data from Variety, total box office went up 20% in 2015 to $1.99b HK ($256m US) from $1.65b HK ($212m US) last year. 332 films saw the light of day in 2015, an increase of 7% from 2014 where 310 films showed in theaters. HK movies saw an uptick too with 59 local movies getting a release in 2015, up from 52 in 2014. Top 10 of 2015 (Period from January 1 - December 31, 2015, all figures in HKD)1. Avengers: Age of Ultron - $132,985,487 2. Jurassic World - $96,295,976 3. Minions - $78,403,991 4. Inside Out - $66,053,079 5. Star Wars: The Force Awakens - $64.9m (estimate) 6. Furious 7 - $59,634,515 7. Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation - $52,970,115 8. Ant-Man - $50,710,391 9. Stand By Me Doraemon - $46,891,675 10. Little Big Master - $46,729,492 Only 1 local release and 1 foreign release outside of Hollywood made the top 10. _____________________________________________________ Tuesday January 5 - Top 10 1. Ip Man 3 - $42.6m HK 2. Sherlock: The Abominable Bride 3. Star Wars: The Force Awakens - $73.9m HK 4. Anniversary 5. Joy 6. The Little Prince 7. Ten Years 8. The Peanuts Movie 9. Initiation Love 10. The Boy and The Beast Ip Man 3's average in the past 2 days was a solid $125k while Star Wars was around $80k. Sherlock beating Star Wars 7 on Tuesday is very big news. Sherlock held a 2,000 admissions advantage over Star Wars 7 on Tuesday which signifies that Star Wars is not generating enough from 2D or 3D now to compensate for the high ticket prices. There are more 2D to 3D showtimes now, around 60-40% in favor of 2D and 3D will see another round of cuts on Thursday. Ip Man 3 is looking at a 55% decline while Sherlock is headed for a 40-50% decline from last weekend's 2 day OW. Star Wars 7 is eroding fast and should dump about 75% from last weekend. An 80% tumble is also in play. Top 10 of all time for Star Wars 7 is still likely unless if it truly falls off the map next week then it is finished.

Star Wars 7's drop is closer to 85-90% with IMAX duplicates and D-BOX taken out. Every holdover had terrible holds aside from Ten Years. Today will definitely come down to walk-ins with so few admissions separating 1 from 10. Ten Years is starting to fade just a little bit. The new openers all stunk. Daddy's Home is doing the worst of the 3 despite being the only opener with over 100 showtimes on Thursday.

Strong for Ip Man 3 despite having a full week vs. last week's 4-day opening weekend. Films dropped off precipitously after the New Year and Ip Man 3 did the best of the bunch on Saturday/Sunday. Star Wars 7 had an OK hold. Hidden in that drop are the weaker week-to-week holiday holds but stronger holds after the new year. Pretty good for Anniversary. Decent to good holds for Peanuts/Little Prince. Strong start for Sherlock. Horrid opening for Joy. Joy opened below Silver Linings Playbook's OW even taking out SLP's sneak previews.

The Little Prince and Joy's Thursday numbers were not given and Secret in Their Eyes' running total was not revealed. Ip Man 3's decline can be considered as one of the better ones this week since its holiday sales are noticably stronger than regular weekdays or weekends. Ip Man 3 passed Ip Man 2's gross on Wednesday and will move ahead of Our Times today and Little Big Master's tomorrow. Sherlock's pre-sales frenzy has cooled off but there are still some pockets of pre-sales heavy showtimes at certain locations. Star Wars 7 had a weak hold but it will pass 10m by next week. Anniversary has done pretty well and will pass 2m by Sunday. Daddy's Home, Secret in Their Eyes and The 33 all bombed. Ten Years is doing extremely well. Joy is a pretty big failure.
| Friday adm. | (so far) | | | January 9 |
Rank | Movie | LW | TW | WKD % chg | QD % chg |
1 | Star Wars: The Force Awakens | 18,177 | 4,239 | -76.7% | +34.2% |

9 | The Little Prince | 5,548 | 687 | -87.6% | +51.0% |
10 | The 33 | -- | 515 | -- | -32.9% |
Most holdovers saw better week-to-week holds on Friday than Thursday with the exception of Star Wars 7 and Ten Years. Troubling for Star Wars 7. It had one of the worst increases from Thursday. Sherlock is coming back strong. Ip Man 3 also had a nice bump from yesterday. Revenant opens to a decent pre-sales number. Slightly disappointed with that Anniversary's increase from Thursday. It should have seen a 50% increase at least.

1 | Ip Man 3 | 48,328 | 12,023 | -75.1% | +30.2% |

10 | The 33 | -- | 1,502 | -- | -15.0% |
These admissions were taken at 10 pm. Final admissions for some films, especially Ip Man 3, are higher.Ok for Ip Man 3. It improving on its week-to-week hold from Thursday is a good sign since last Friday was New Year's Day and holidays help Ip Man 3 out a lot. Not bad for Sherlock at all. Good start for Revenant. Opening day reviews have it at a very good 4.4/5. It'll be interesting to see if more of the GA approves this weekend or if OD users slightly overrates it because usually this isn't the type of film that most moviegoers will see. Very bad hold for Star Wars. It was one of three to decrease with the week-to-week hold from Thursday. Very weak daily increase for Anniversary. Poor for Secret in Their Eyes. Not good for Daddy's Home. Excellent for Ten Years. Understandably awful for The Little Prince and major disaster for The 33.

Decent hold for Star Wars 7. Inflated drop for Sherlock. Meh for Ip Man 3. Not bad of an increase for The Revenant. Anniversary had a nice hold. At 2 PM, less than 500 admissions separates the top 4. Both Ip Man 3 and The Revenant have caught up to Star Wars 7 and are hot on Sherlock's heels.

Saturday 9:30pm HKT:
Ip man 3 leads the pack with 16,900. Sherlock: The Abominable Bride and The Revenant are tied with each at about 15,400. Star Wars 7 is fourth with 11,600. Measured in $, SW7 is first, followed by The Revenant, IM3, and Sherlock, in that particular order.
Ten Years remains the ruler of the PSA chart averaging over 140 tickets sold per showing in 21 showings.

Why are you arguing semantics when you essentially agree with me? If people need to go to work on Saturday, it means it's a working day for them regardless of it being a half day or not.

10 | The 33 | -- | 2,443 | -- | +62.6% |
Not impressed with that hold for Ip Man 3. Great hold for Sherlock considering last Saturday had huge pre-sales rush factor. Great increase for Revenant. Pretty bad for Star Wars. Anniversary did alright.
| Weekend Projections | | | January 7 |
Rank | Movie | TW | % chg | Total |
1 | Ip Man 3 | $600,000 | -63.9% | $6,235,000 |
2 | The Revenant | $525,000 | | $525,000 |

5 | Anniversary | $275,000 | -50.5% | $2,005,000 |
This turned out to be a pretty boring weekend. Ip Man 3 had its first taste of failure this week with it falling over 60%. The film had impressive weekend and daily holds up till this weekend but it lacked the followup required for it to pass 9m or 10m. Very good opening for The Revenant. Had it opened on a Thursday, it would have won the weekend over Ip Man 3. Very good hold for Sherlock though pre-sales will start to really slow down soon. Horrible hold for Star Wars 7 but it does pass 10m. Anniversary broke through 2m with a decent hold.

If "white-collar" people do work Saturdays, they work half-day.

After yesterday's somewhat weak hold for Ip Man 3, it rebounded today and was the only holdover of the top 5 to increase from Saturday. The Revenant barely increased from yesterday after its Sunday pre-sales spiked by 1,600 from Saturday. WOM might have something to do with it. It went from a high of 4.4 to now a 3.9/5. GA does not seem to be thrilled with the movie so drops might not be all that great in the coming weeks. We will see. Sherlock had a terrible Sunday drop from Saturday. Although it fell hard last Sunday from last Saturday as well, that one had more to do with opening on a Saturday than Sunday not being favorable toward it. I think the rush has trailed off. Star Wars had an OK hold. Good hold for Anniversary. Daddy's Home finally passed Secret in Their Eyes in admissions on Sunday.

4 | Star Wars: The Force Awakens | $365,000 | -73.0% | $10,005,000 |
5 | Anniversary | $275,000 | -50.5% | $2,005,000 |
This was a really tough weekend for most wide holdovers. Ip Man 3 did not do much to make a case for 9m or 10m. At this point, Ip Man 3 will need to have Avatar style drops the next 3 weekends to make 8m. Otherwise I still see 7m as a lock. The Revenant had a pretty good opening weekend. Its Sunday had some slight issues that could play into next weekend and beyond. Right now, I will say it gets to around 1.8m total. Sherlock had a nice hold this weekend. The worry was that the frenzy would stop and it would slow down dramatically but it played very well up until Sunday. The wheels came off and it dropped 17% from Saturday which could mean that the rush factor is over. Star Wars 7 had a terrible hold. Its run has been mostly unspectacular and I really underestimated how much high ticket sales inflated its gross. In admissions though, it is a disappointment but it becomes the 4th film this year to hit 10m after Avengers 2, Jurassic World and Minions. Disney's throttling tactics proved valuable as it allowed Star Wars to hit 10m. Expect the sequel to decrease massively even with Donnie Yen. Anniversary had a decent hold this weekend. It also passes 2m, 2x more than the original made in 2006. Below the top 5, Daddy's Home had trouble drawing people in despite the Mark Wahlberg/Will Ferrell duo returning to the big screen. It opened with an estimated $170,000 and HK is the 3rd lowest Asian opening for it. Opening weekend reviews stand at 4.0. Secret in Their Eyes was a disaster. Reviewers had little praise for the film and it only got a 3.7 from users. It was only able to achieve a $120,000 weekend, slightly behind Taiwan's opening.

Re: HK 1/7 EST: Pendulum swings back & forth; now rests w/ I
January 7 Weekend Actuals
1. Ip Man 3 - about $580,000 (-65.0%)/$6,213,564 2. The Revenant - $453,072 3. Sherlock: An Abominable Bride - about $415,000 (-15.3%)/$1,165,043 4. Star Wars 7 - about $325,000 (-75.9%)/$9,967,592 5. Anniversary - about $290,000 (-47.7%)/$2,019,408 6. Daddy's Home - $168,284 7. Secret in Their Eyes - $142,394 Ten Years - $284,788 The Little Prince - $1,553,391 The 33 - $77,669
So Star Wars 7 doesn't pass 10m on Sunday. It'll have to wait one more day for it to happen.

Re: HK 1/7 EST: Pendulum swings back & forth; now rests w/ I
Ip Man 3 finished on top of The Revenant on Monday although theaters are banking on revived interest due to its 3 Golden Globe wins. The Revenant's score, however, is still dropping, down to a 3.8.
Actuals
Star Wars 7 - $10,035,667 Ip Man 3 - $6,221,564
So Star Wars did pass 10m on Sunday apparently. I'll wait for official confirmation from MPIA.
Early Thursday schedules
The 5th Wave and The Revenant are on top at almost all locations. Steve Jobs is also getting in on the action except for more rural areas. Ip Man 3 gets either half or full day showtimes at most locations. Anniversary will get 2 or 3 showings depending on which version theaters show (theaters are also showing the Director's cut version starting on Thursday). Sherlock gets cut or reduced to 1-3 showtimes. Star Wars 7 is axed or squished with only 1 showtime left on Thursday.
