Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Actuals
Yes, it added 153,127,384 yen ($2 million) for the week, and needs about 300 million more yen ($3.7 million) to achieve $30 million.
Black Swan should make approx. 100 million yen or a little more for this week, so it'll be around 2.2-2.25 billion yen ($27.5-28 million) after Sunday. So it'll probably hit 2.4 billion yen ($30 million) the second weekend of July, or the week leading up to it.

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Yearly Revenue Update
Corpse, What do you think TF3 will make in japan. TF2 dropped quite a bit in admissions from the 1st film. But the characters are well known in japan and this is in 3d.

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Yearly Revenue Update
It's a tricky one, and I don't like it's release date. Opening two weeks after what is likely to be the biggest weekend on record, and against a fellow 3D film (Cars 2). I doubt Cars 2 will be much of a threat, but will take some of those 3D screens. It would do much better in the fall, where one or two films generally breakout away from the competitive summer. Anyway, before I go off topic again: Transformers - 4.01 billion yen Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - 2.32 billion yen (-42%) Hollywood Franchises with a 3D Installment:The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe - 6.86 billion yen The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian - 3.00 billion yen (-56%) The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader (3D) - 2.61 billion yen (-13%) Shrek - 2 billion yen Shrek 2 - 2.5 billion yen (+25%) Shrek the Third - 1.55 billion yen (-38%) Shrek Forever After (3D) - 965 million yen (-37%) Resident Evil - 2.30 billion yen Resident Evil: Apocalypse - 2.70 billion yen (+17%) Resident Evil: Extinction - 2.85 billion yen (+6%) Resident Evil: Afterlife (3D) - 4.70 billion yen (+65%). Almost beat the film's domestic gross in USD ($60.1 million vs $56.9 million). Unfortunately, I don't really see Transformers following the path of any of these franchises. But they're the only decent comparisons. With Transformers 2 dropping less than Narnia 2 (still a big drop-off, clearly), I think Transformers 3 has a shot at increasing over it's predecessor in gross unlike Narnia 3. I highly doubt it pulls a RE4 since that franchise increased with every installment. I would predict a range of 2.5-3 billion yen (high 20's/low 30's to mid/high 30's) at the moment. Japan gets the film on July 29th, a full month after the rest of the world. September would be perfect, but oh wells.

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Yearly Revenue Update
Early reports are indicating a good showing for Super 8 this weekend.
At the usual locations, as of Thursday, ticket sales were tracking at 22.8% of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Pirates 4 opened with 773,184 (2-day) / 986,455 (3-day) admissions.
If the 22.8% number would hold the entire weekend (much too early to say, of course), Super 8 would open with approx. 175,000 (2-day) / 225,000 (3-day) admissions for a gross of approx. 225 million yen+ (about $3 million) for the 2-day, and 300 million yen (almost $4 million) for the 3-day using a rough avg. ticket price.
Such an opening would give Super 8 a final total of about 2 billion yen ($25 million).
I haven't read anything concrete on Andalusia: Goddess of Retribution, yet, besides one post having it at 32.5% ahead of Amalfi: Rewards of the Goddess. If it holds any weight, Andalusia may crack 500 million yen ($6 million) for the weekend. I wouldn't put much on this report at the moment, though.
Amalfi opened with 377 million ($3.95 million) yen, and finished with 3.65 billion yen ($40.36 million) in 2009.

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Super 8 Report
Disregard the info on Andalusia above, it's groundless.
Anyway, with X-Men: First Class currently in release, Thor coming up next weekend, and with Green Lantern (IMDb says 7/22, but I don't see it listed anywhere) and Captain America (10/15) later in the year, I thought I'd provide the list below:
Top Grossing Superhero Movies:
1. Spider-Man - 7.50 billion yen 2. Spider-Man 3 - 7.12 billion yen 3. Spider-Man 2 - 6.70 billion yen 4. Hancock - 3.10 billion yen 5. Batman - 1.91 billion yen 6. X-Men - 1.85 billion yen 7. X2: X-Men United - 1.80 billion yen 8. Superman II - 1.65 billion yen 9. The Dark Knight - 1.60 billion yen 10. X-Men: The Last Stand - 1.53 billion yen
X-Men: First Class will fail to make the Top 10, as will Green Lantern and Captain America I'm sure. But I have a feeling Thor might sneak in thanks to 3D and seeming perhaps a little fresh.

I have no idea how accurate this is but the official warner bros. site in Japan states that Green Lantern will come out on September 10. Is Hangover 2 coming out on July 1? http://wwws.warnerbros.co.jp/movies/comingsoon/

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Super 8 Report
July 22nd is definitely wrong, so September 10th is probably correct. Thank you.
Yeah, Hangover 2 opens on Friday, July 1st. I just have it listed as the 2nd in my signature because Friday isn't part of the Weekend Gross and most films open on Saturday.
Super 8 also opened on a Friday, June 24th, but I have it as the 25th in my signature, too.

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Forecast
June 25-26 Weekend Forecast
1. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Walt Disney) Week 6 2. Andalusia: Goddess of Retribution (Toho) NEW 3. Super 8 (Paramount) NEW 4. Paradise Kiss (Warner Bros.) Week 4 5. Denderah (TOEI) NEW 6. Gokaiger Goseiger Super Sentai 199 Hero Great Battle (TOEI) Week 3 7. Hoshi Imaru Inu (Toho) Week 3 8. What If a Female Manager of a High School Baseball Team Read Drunker's "Management"? (Toho) Week 4 9. Princess Toyotomi (Toho) Week 5 10. X-Men: First Class (Fox) Week 3
Saturday admissions for Andalusia have it 90.1% ahead of "Management", which would translate to about 350 million yen ($4.4 million) for the weekend gross.
Saturday admissions for Super 8 are 44.4% ahead of "Management", so should be looking at a weekend gross around 250 million yen ($3.1 million).
With Andalusia appearing to open less than expected (walk-ins may be strong since it skews older, though), Pirates of the Caribbean 4 may stay on top by a narrow margin for a sixth weekend. The six week total will be approx. 7.7/7.8 billion yen ($96/97 million USD) on 5 million admissions.
If that happens, it would mean Pirates of the Caribbean 4 could to stay on top again next weekend (doubtful that Thor will open high enough), and again the following weekend (small openers) to make it eight weeks at #1.

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Forecast
Despite a 9.0 Earthquake leaving 10% of theaters still closed, distributor Toho is having a record year at the Box Office so far: 2011: Jan. 4,007,573,840 ($49,609,391) Feb. 4,868,623,090 / 8,876,196,130 ($110,064,832) Mar. 4,680,026,010 / 13,556,222,940 ($168,097,164) Apr. 5,525,625,000 / 19,081,847,940 ($236,661,915) May. 6,518,988,260 / 25,600,836,200 ($317,450,368) Toho is the biggest distributor in Japan, having a market share over 30% the past several years. So far for 2011, it's at a new high of 39%. Toho's biggest year on record was last year with 74.87 billion yen ($910 million). After 5 months, Toho is currently tracking 19.9% ahead of last year. Toho heavy hitters this summer include: Andalusia: Goddess of Retribution in release this weekend, and Studio Ghibli's From Kokuriko Hill and Pokemon Movies 14 and 15 (advance ticket sales just set a record surpassing 2.5 million for those two, approx. 2.5 yen or $30 million already) on July 16th. You can see Toho's 2010 and 2009's results below: http://www.toho.co.jp/c_topics/eigyou1105.pdf

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Forecast
Pretty much no news was released this weekend for some reason, so I really don't know anything right now. But the Rankings by Location (Toho, Warner, Shikoku) begins: Toho1. Super 8 (Paramount) NEW 2. Andalusia: Goddess of Retribution (Toho) NEW 3. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Walt Disney) Week 6 4. Gokaiger Goseiger Super Sentai 199 Hero Great Battle (TOEI) Week 3 5. Princess Toyotomi (Toho) Week 4 6. Paradise Kiss (Warner Bros.) Week 3 7. What If a Female Manager of a High School Baseball Team Read Drunker's "Management"? (Toho) Week 4 8. Hoshi Imaru Inu (Toho) Week 3 9. X-Men: First Class (Fox) Week 3 10. 127 Hours (Gaga) Week 2 http://www.tohotheater.jp/index.htmlSuper 8 coming in 1st at Toho locations is very surprising. I'm curious if the film perhaps had previews (similar to Inception last Summer). I suspect the top 3 are going to be very close in the National Ranking now. I'll post Warner and Shikoku's Rankings if released before the National Ranking or Weekend Estimates.

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Forecast
390 million yen estimate ($4.8 million) is being reported for Super 8's 3-Day gross, so probably about 300 million yen ($3.7 million) for the weekend.
I don't think 300 million yen or so is enough to debut at No.1 for the weekend, but even if it falls a bit short of a No.1 debut, almost 400 million yen over 3-Days is plenty enough for a total over 2 billion yen. A normal multiplier for a Friday release would allow it to reach about 2.3 billion yen ($28.5 million). 2.5 billion yen ($30 million) could be in reach if WOM is strong.

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Rankings
And just when it looked like Pirates would finally be bumped out of the top spot, it makes it six consecutive weeks now! In gross at least, it had to have finished 3rd in admissions this weekend. Glad I went with my gut and predicted Pirates would narrowly pull it off this weekend despite most local sites predicting Andalusia to open at No.1 (still could have in admissions, however).
Numbers coming up very soon.

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Rankings
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides stays on top for a sixth consecutive week, grossing an estimated 316.2 million yen ($3.9 million) on 197,124 admissions.
The six week total is now an estimated 7,798,050,410 yen ($96.7 million) on 5,040,000 admissions.http://www.cinematopics.com/cinema/news ... _seq=12444Both Andalusia and Super 8 will definitely have over 200,000 admissions for the weekend, but thanks to the 3D boost, it just wasn't enough to overcome Pirates in gross this weekend. And with this win, Pirates has a shot at making it eight consecutive weeks at No.1. The avg. ticket price for Pirates saw a slight increase to 1,546 yen ($19.13) this weekend.

That should be good enough for the Top 5, but probably not the Top 3. Since Andalusia and Super 8 weren't far from Pirates this weekend, they'll most likely remain the Top 3 films with Fullmetal Alchemist and Thor fighting for 4th and 5th place.

Here are some previews: http://www.hagaren-movie.net/#/trailer

Hmm, so is $120 million attainable for Pirates?

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Pirates Remain Unsinkable.
I still doubt it, but won't say it's impossible. It would need to gross 2 billion more yen to achieve that total, and 1.5 billion yen should be the limit now. So I'm still going with 9 billion yen ($112 million).
Some weekend results,
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides: 316.20 million yen ($3.9 million), 197,124 admissions / 7.709 billion yen ($95.8 million), 5.04 million admissions.
Super 8: 307.59 million yen ($3.8 million), 235,839 admissions / 392.25 million yen ($4.8 million), 305,658 admissions.
Andalusia: Goddess of Retribution: 258.47 million yen ($3.2 million), 205,758 admissions.
Very strong start for Super 8. It's likely total range is 2-2.5 billion yen ($25-30 million).
Not as good for Andalusia. It's down 30% from it's predecessor's opening (to be fair, Amalfi did open on the biggest weekend of the Summer in 2009, mid July, though).
Normally a film would finish with 1.5 billion yen (almost $20 million) with it's opening, but Amalfi received a multiplier of almost 10. The films skew much older (middle aged women being it's main audience), so I expect great legs this time, too, so probably looking at a similar finish as Super 8.
I mistranslated Pirates 4's total in a previous post, but corrected it in this one.
