Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Estimates (01/09-10)
Frozen was really another social phenomenon back then in Japan with its monster legs.... especially after the 10th weekend.
Corpse, I remember you have a multiplier chart for movie performance in Japan?

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Estimates (01/09-10)
All things considered, it's still a good weekend for Demon Slayer. Perhaps, if it has a good hold, it could return to the number 1 spot next weekend!
And wiyh an estimate of ¥284 million, DS should have the 3rd highest grossing 13th weekend, right Corpse?

Dont know if DS can pull a 11.5x Yes, Japan uses 2-day opening weekends. Demon Slayer has had great legs. The fact that it has managed to get above a 10 is incredible. It is just not possible for it to have gone much beyond a 12 (probably its max) because of how high it opened. It has nothing to do with determining how its legs were, or anything like that, due to how unprecedented its opening was, as its opening wasn't just a record breaking opening. It was way, way more than that. It takes weeks for a film to achieve phenomenon status (such as Frozen), but Demon Slayer is the first film in history to ever begin as a phenomenon on day one. No film had ever sold 1 million tickets in one day (not even 900,000). Demon Slayer did it FIVE times. It took almost a month for its numbers to come down to the previous opening/first week record holders in the market. A 15 multiplier for example would mean it doing over 38 million admissions. That's almost double the previous attendance record, and not really possible. And Demon Slayer already achieved becoming the only film in history (of all time) to ever have 20%+ of its population come out for it as of last week. Besides surpassing Spirited Away to become the new #1, which it did with absolute ease, the other, perhaps even more "ultimate" goal was to be seen by 20% of the population. This wasn't the "Endgame" equivalent in Japan. Endgame didn't sell more tickets than Gone With the Wind, nor outgross it when adjusting for inflation. It didn't even outgross The Force Awakens. Demon Slayer achieved both of those equivalents in the market with ease, and it's not done yet.

A double-sided poster illustrated by Hideaki Sorachi will be given out to moviegoers of Gintama: The Final beginning on January 29th. Illustrated giveaways of the individual characters are currently being given out to moviegoers, but the group illustration is exclusive to the poster giveaway in three weeks.

So Demon Slayer takes 1st spot this weekend because of the ticket price for 4DX sessions?

Weekend actual (Sat+Sun): DS: ¥299M (180k admits) Gintama: ¥287M (205k admits) .... so if DS is at top on the 13th weekend.... maybe it will continue 14th and 15th weekend?

Yes Gintama wins in admissions as mentioned above. Those are weekend actuals so the figures are correct.

Previous film opened to ¥1.13 billion for comparison.

I expected it to open large enough to win in admissions but its fine. Good for record books

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Estimates (01/09-10)
We haven't had "split winners" in awhile.
In Japan, weekend rankings are determined by admissions, so Gintama technically dethroned Demon Slayer. But when I post the weekend rankings, I do it by revenue, and Demon Slayer was able to hold onto #1 due to its higher ticket prices (from the 4DX showings) and get a 13th week at #1.
Another famous example of this occurring during a major run was when Detective Conan dethroned Frozen in its 6th week by selling more tickets, but Frozen's higher ticket prices kept it at #1 in revenue.
So, since Japan ranks films by ticket sold over the weekend, Gintama is being reported as the new #1 since that's true. When I post my charts, I do them by revenue and note any situations of different rankings in admissions in the weekend analysis. I simply found it easier years ago to post the weekend results in revenue since the majority of people seem to go by that, and the weekend admissions for the entire top 10 is never made available whereas the revenue is.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Estimates (01/09-10)
Demon Slayer will likely get a 14th week this upcoming weekend now, and that should be the end of its hold on the #1 spot.
As long as Evangelion is scheduled for Jan. 23rd, it won't be able to beat it. And we definitely don't want Evangelion, or anything else, being delayed either. Evangelion's opening weekend is going to be subdued a bit from the restrictions in place now, but it'll still open well and provide a nice boost to the box office. If it does get a last minute delay, because the opening weekend for the film is indeed very important (a reason Toho never rescheduled Detective Conan last year like all their other films, instead just delaying it a full year), hopefully it's just pushed back a few weeks.
Also, Weekend Actuals will be posted later this evening. Very few numbers are available right now to post it.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals (01/09-10)
Weekend Actuals (01/09-10): 01 (01) ¥299,486,650 ($2.9 million), -56%, ¥35,657,234,850 ($341.0 million), Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (Toho/Aniplex) WK13 02 (---) ¥287,483,500 ($2.8 million), 0, ¥443,495,840 ($4.3 million), Gintama: The Final (Warner Bros.) NEW 03 (02) ¥105,504,450 ($1.0 million), -59%, ¥3,404,734,750 ($32.0 million), New Interpretation Records of the Three Kingdoms (Toho) WK5 04 (03) ¥101,925,500 ($978,000), -38%, ¥1,190,273,600 ($11.6 million), Poupelle of Chimney Town (Toho) WK3 05 (04) ¥x84,363,600 ($808,000), -39%, ¥1,211,275,850 ($11.7 million), Pokemon: Coco (Toho) WK3 06 (05) ¥x74,149,050 ($712,000), -43%, ¥1,496,262,000 ($14.5 million), The Promised Neverland (Toho) WK4 07 (---) ¥x37,369,300 ($358,000), 0, ¥x56,492,140 ($0.5 million), Sailor Moon Eternal - Part 1 (Toei) NEW 08 (---) ¥x35,775,280 ($343,000), 0, ¥x47,566,700 ($0.5 million), Adult's Situation (Sony) NEW 09 (06) ¥x34,988,600 ($335,000), -59%, ¥2,572,688,550 ($24.9 million), Stand By Me, Doraemon 2 (Toho) WK8 10 (07) ¥x29,034,940 ($279,000), -52%, ¥207,738,630 ($2.0 million), Peninsula (Gaga) WK2
>Demon Slayer: Mugen Train managed to achieve its thirteenth weekend atop the box office, though it did fall to second place in admissions (180,000) over the weekend. The #1 film of all-time achieved the second biggest thirteenth weekend ever, just behind Frozen. And after the holiday Monday, its 88-day total has reached ¥35,790,039,800 ($342.3 million) with 26,210,549 admissions.
>Gintama: The Final wasn't quite able to dethrone Demon Slayer in revenue, but it did open at #1 in terms of admissions. Japan does their weekend rankings by ticket sales, therefore it's been reported as the film that dethroned Demon Slayer. The Final film sold an impressive 204,000 admissions over the weekend frame on 197 screens, and sold an even stronger 384,220 admissions over its four-day (Fri.-Mon) holiday weekend. It will be aiming to reach the ¥2 billion (~$20 million) milestone.
>New Interpretation Records of the Three Kingdoms rounded out the top 3 spots, and is nearing the ¥3.5 billion mark. Expect it to finish with about ¥4 billion (~$40 million). And as of Monday, it has sold an impressive 2.57 million admissions. It is the fourth highest grossing film released in 2020.
>The Promised Neverland broke the ¥1.5 billion mark (¥1.537 billion) on the holiday Monday. It still has a chance of reaching ¥2 billion, but could fall a bit shy. Either way, this was a pretty successful release, as it managed to outgross many other live-action Shonen releases.
>Sailor Moon Eternal - Part 1 doesn't look like it did well, but I don't really think it was meant to be a major box office success. It was barely a wide release, and performed similarly to limited or barely wide older anime releases, such as the Digimon Tri films, Gundam films, and Space Battleship Yamato films.
>Stand By Me, Doraemon 2 is not going to reach the ¥3 billion milestone, which will make it the first Doraemon film to miss the mark since 2011. Not going to try to spin this into some successful performance, it's not. However, every single film targeting a younger audience has disappointed since COVID, so it's not the film itself. Simply put, this isn't a good time to release younger skewing films like Doraemon, Pokemon, Crayon Shin-chan, etc., but since these are annual franchises, delaying them for too long isn't really an option since they'll run into the next release.
