A Million Ways to Die in the West is pushed back to June 5. I don't think the other 2 will affect X-Men that much. I think DoFP will be losing many screens. EoT and Maleficent are both in 3D and IMAX.

Re: HK 5/22 EST: X-Men 2nd biggest OW this year; Overheard 3
By the way, the Cantonese title "奪命西" for Million Ways to Die is a great play on words. Literally, it means "deadly west". In video games and sports, it means "deadlykiller swirl". As a slang term, it translates to "deadly vagina", meaning "deadly woman". Having a "hip" title could get the movie several $100K more in gross.

Re: HK 5/22 EST: X-Men 2nd biggest OW this year; Overheard 3
X-Men made around 2.83m for the 4-day weekend. Very nice. It beats Captain America 2's OW and makes it the 2nd biggest OW of the year. Thursday schedules

Most theaters are giving Maleficent and Edge of Tomorrow 1 screen each. MCL chain is splitting things right down the middle with X-Men, Edge of Tomorrow and Maleficent getting 2 screens each at night. X-Men loses 1 screen or gets downsized at the other theater chains. At Festival Walk on Thursday, X-Men loses just 1 showtime from Wednesday. Langham Place is really pushing X-Men this week. X-Men has been allocated 3 screens while Maleficent and Edge of Tomorrow gets 1. Pre-sales have X-Men in front by a slight margin over Maleficent with Edge of Tomorrow struggling behind them. X-Men will repeat as the winner while Edge of Tomorrow and Maleficent will duke it out for #2.

That's a great news for X-Men specially specially due to the frontloaded nature of the series in general.

Huge drop for X-Men, however, it will rebound during the day. It could end up with around 15,000-16,000 admissions for the day. Slightly disappointing for Edge of Tomorrow. Walk-ins will decide on who gets the 3rd biggest screen this weekend. Decent opening day pre-sales for Maleficent. Godzilla cracked under the weight of the top 3. Bad for Neighbors.

Is Yoji Yamada a well-known name in HK? He's one of Japan's most-renowned directors, having directed over 70 films since the early 1960s, many being either box office hits and/or critically acclaimed, too.
I ask because seeing his latest, The Little House, ranking 5th for the day so far seems impressive to me.

I ask because seeing his latest, The Little House, ranking 5th for the day so far seems impressive to me. That is a rich filmography he has there. But unfortunately I know little about him. It was because of Takako Matsu 松隆子 that I got to see one of his films. He should be quite well-known in Hong Kong. The cinema Metroplex's "Masters and Auteurs" series features four of his movies for the month of June ( http://www.metroplex.com.hk/en/movie/specials).

10 | Homeland | -- | 295 | -- |
Good for X-Men. It pulled away from Maleficent and Edge of Tomorrow with walk-ins. It will be close but X-Men will win in gross on Thursday. While X-Men has gotten more 2D showtimes this week, 3D is still generating some ticket sales unlike The Amazing Spider-Man 2 or Captain America 2. Edge of Tomorrow might have gotten the IMAX edge but it was losing to Maleficent in admissions for most of the day up until the last couple of hours. Edge of Tomorrow will pull away from Maleficent in gross thanks to IMAX and it catering more toward adults. Reviews for Edge of Tomorrow are decent so far. Maleficent had a pretty strong opening day. The big draw was Angelina Jolie and it led over Edge of Tomorrow for most of the day. This bodes well for the weekend where it should have one of the strongest increases. Also, theaters are noticing the high admissions and have upgraded its screens over Edge of Tomorrow's and even X-Men's at some locations. Early reviews are fantastic. Devastating for Godzilla. With this poor hold, weekend showtimes have already started to drop or disappear altogether in favour of Overheard 3 previews. Similarly bad for Neighbors. Decent for Aberdeen. Incredible hold for The Little House. Eternal Zero is also doing well. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 continues to bleed. Homeland did quite good, averaging nearly 60 people per showing.

9 | Homeland | -- | 153 | -- | +19.5% |
10 | The Eternal Zero | 391 | 143 | -63.4% | +55.4% |
Good hold for X-Men. OK increase for Maleficent. Weak for Edge of Tomorrow. Awful for Godzilla. Neighbors is dying fast. Bring on A Million Ways to Die in the West. Magnificent for The Little House. Ok for Aberdeen. Disastrous for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Average for Homeland. Harsh pre-sales hold for The Eternal Zero. Maybe it can pull it back with walk-ins. ____________________________________________ Overheard 3 will roll out previews beginning on Saturday. As a result, it has forced theaters to downgrade X-Men. Early reviews are looking good and pre-sales have been steady. More to come tomorrow.

Its opening day was going to be slightly frontloaded so the 65% fall is not a big concern. Its holds will shrink as the weekend progresses. Slightly disappointing for Edge of Tomorrow. Better than expected for Maleficent. Ghastly for Godzilla. Great for The Little House. Good totals for The Eternal Zero and Neighbors. Nice for Transcendence. Disappointing total for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Dull gross for Aberdeen.

So X-Men is on par with CA2 after 8-days and it had a better hold than the later while facing a lot of competition. Good

Excellent for X-Men. Alright for Maleficent. Soft increase for Edge of Tomorrow. Just outright bad for Godzilla. Not much better for Neighbors. Marvelous for The Little House. X-Men: Days of Future Friday estimate: $250,000/$4.1m in 9 days

That's not a bad hold for X-Men. It was downgraded by all theaters due to Overheard 3 previews and Maleficent surprising so that drop is actually pretty decent. Strong increase for Maleficent. Underwhelming for Edge of Tomorrow. Excellent pre-sales for Overheard 3 previews. This is a good sign for next week. Goodbye Godzilla. Superb for The Little House. Harsh decreases for the rest of the top 10.

Still good for X-Men. It does have the holiday to ease the pain but it is coming off of a franchise best OW and two semi-big openers this week along with Overheard 3 previews this weekend. Very good for Maleficent. It might pull out an admissions win today. Edge of Tomorrow is cultivating its own audience. It hasn't fallen that far back of Maleficent or X-Men but rather Maleficent and X-Men are cruising this weekend. Nice for Overheard 3. Extremely poor for Godzilla.

5 | Godzilla | $76,000 | -84.8% | $2,686,000 |
Good weekend hold for X-Men. It had to contend with 2 and a half openers and it came off of franchise record OW last week. Maleficent opened well and is playing strong this weekend. Edge of Tomorrow is no slouch. It did slightly below market expectations but Tom Cruise remains a big draw here. Overheard 3 previews got off to a scorching start. It will do close to $500,000 over the 3-day holiday period. Godzilla was hammered by the top 4. Probably the worst legs I've seen from a blockbuster.

Close to 85% drop for Godzilla is horrible even with the competition.

Good for X-Men. It was in a huge battle with Maleficent all day for top spot in admissions. Powerful Sunday for Maleficent. It is really coming on strong. Nice for Edge of Tomorrow. Decent for Overheard 3. Terrible hold for Godzilla but solid increase on the holiday-fueled Sunday.

Good 2nd weekend for X-Men. 6m might be crossed next weekend. Nice start for Maleficent. 1m is very much in play for the 4-day weekend. Edge of Tomorrow did alright. Great number for Overheard 3 sneaks. Godzilla's disastrous holds continue.

 Re: HK 5/29: X-Men dodges Maleficent/Edge; Overheard3 sneaks
About 3,000 people did not go to the movies yesterday... Sources: Apple DailyThe House News This Wednesday is the 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown in China. 6/4 was the date the crackdown occurred. "89" was the year. A lot of people in Hong Kong still remember. But not much they can do to get China to loosen controls and transform into a democracy except to shout "Down with the Communist Party" to embarrass Beijing. Some even think democracy in China is not their concern and it should be left to the people in China to decide. Their primary concerns are for HK to remain free and to be able to freely nominate and elect their own government so to stop China from meddling with its affairs.

May 29 Weekend Actuals1. X-Men: Days of Future Past - $4,875,349 2. Maleficent - $1,031,819 ( opening weekend actual) 3. Edge of Tomorrow - $902,842 ( opening weekend actual) 4. Godzilla - $2,708,527 5. Neighbors - will pass $838,353 today The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - $7,029,273 The Little House - $70,937 The Eternal Zero - $175,409 Heaven is For Real - $353,398 Aberdeen - $1,051,166 The top 4 all increased from estimates. Strong hold for X-Men. Good for Maleficent. Decent for Edge of Tomorrow. Godzilla was dismantled by the top 3 + Overheard 3 previews on the weekend. Despite having a terrible hold, Neighbors will finish with a very strong total. Very disappointing for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Great for The Little House and The Eternal Zero. Heaven is For Real is doing awesome. Average for Aberdeen.

Monday was a holiday in HK? Why are there so many increases in the Top 10?

Hmm I see. Still wondering why X-Men was the only one that decreased. I understand that a lot of screens were given to Maleficent and Overhead but still it was doing really strong over weekend.

X-Men lost its biggest screen to Maleficent on Monday and the long runtime meant less pre-sales on Monday night. Dragon Boat Festival holiday admissions

Schedules vary greatly this week. At Broadway/AMC, theaters are content with leaving Overheard 3 on the biggest screen only and have allocated its 2nd biggest to Maleficent with X-Men, Edge of Tomorrow and A Million Ways to Die in the West duking it out for the 3rd/4th/5th screens. At UA, they are rallying behind Overheard 3 with most giving it 2 screens. Langham Place is an exception and the theater has put Overheard 3 on 3 screens. Edge of Tomorrow has lost some IMAX showtimes to Overheard 3 (non-IMAX) as well. A Million Ways to Die in the West gets half to 1 screen. Maleficent/X-Men and Edge all get 1 screen. MCL/Golden Harvest are mixed in their support for Overheard 3. Most have given it just 1 screen but others have opted to show it on 2 screens. Maleficent/X-Men/Edge get 1 screen at almost all theaters (Maleficent does get 2 screens at 1 location).

Pre-sales over at The ONE have Overheard 3 about 2:1 in front of Maleficent. Strong 7 PM Showing and afternoon showings seem to be doing well. Maleficent is doing well at night. 10 PM is doing exceptionally well. After Maleficent, X-Men and A Million Ways to Die in the West are virtually tied with Edge of Tomorrow lagging behind in 5th.
