Re: HK 4/10: Will The Midnight After overpower CA2 for #1?
April 3 Weekend Actuals1. Captain America 2 - $2,772,728 2. Naked Ambition - $786,681 Nymphomaniac Volume 1 - $38,689 A Tale of Samurai Cooking - A True Love Story - $21,923 Kano - will break $257,928 by today The Grand Budapest Hotel - $348,203 Noah, Non-Stop, Divergent and That Awkward Moment were not reported due to no precise figures given. Captain America 2 was overestimated but it still doubled Captain America's OW and it still beat its total in just 4 days. Naked Ambition did quite well. Not really great for Nympomaniac Volume 1 and A Tale of Samurai Cooking. Good for Kano. The Grand Budapest Hotel is posting solid numbers. i.hope wrote: The Midnight After is adapted from an internet novella, first published on HKGolden forum. The sci-fi horror comedy is fairly popular among Hong Kong webizens. Its box office potential should be similar to that of the 2011 sex comedy Due West, which is also based on a web novel. But unlike Due West, The Midnight After seems less mainstream. It's directed by Fruit Chan, best known for indies Made in Hong Kong and Durian Durian. But The Midnight After is riding on a growing anti-establishment political climate in Hong Kong. Maybe it will be hailed as an accurate reflection of the mood of the city - aging, disgruntled, and cynical. Fairly popular? It's extremely popular. It's pretty much all that everyone talks about here. As for its box office potential, it will slaughter Due West by a wide margin. This has the potential to gross 3m, maybe even 4m is WOM is good. I don't believe the popularity of this adapted film has anything to do with political ties. It's simply a post apocalyptic story that is not centered around zombies. Thursday schedulesBroadway

At Festival Walk, The Midnight After gets 2 screens at night while Captain America 2 sees an increase in showtimes and 3 screens at night. The reason why Captain America 2 received more showtimes this week is because The Midnight After was bestowed the coveted biggest screen (which has more than 2x seat advantage next to the 2nd biggest theater: 354 seats: 156 seats) and therefore, the theater had to soften the blow by giving Captain America 2 2-3 screens. Overall, Captain America 2 will lose 30% of seats at night.

At Langham Place, showings are spread out quite evenly with The Midnight After and Captain America 2 with 13 showings apiece. Naked Ambition is not far behind with 10 3D showings. All 3 films will have two showings at 7 PM. Altogether, those 3 films combine for 94% of the showings on Thursday. Currently, The Midnight After has the advantage with the bigger theaters at 7 PM and 3 showings at 9 PM while Captain America has 3 showings at midnight.

Yes, you read that right. Cine Times will host a gimmick 3D screening of Naked Ambition for males only. UA has done this in the past. They did it in 2011 when Sex & Zen was released and they threw a females only bash for a couple of nights (I can't recall if it was Langham Place or if it was Times Square that showed it.). The Midnight After and Captain America 2 tie with 9 showings each. Captain America 2 though has the edge here with the biggest screen and the inflated ticket prices thanks to installing Dolby Atmos at their theater.

Note: These pre-sales were taken at 9 PM.Strong pre-selling at night. Afternoon and morning pre-sales are slow. Midnights seem to be getting some action. It must have something to do with the title. Interestingly, theaters that have released early weekend showtimes for The Midnight After are seeing night shows sell out faster than the afternoon. The Midnight After should start off with about 12,000 in pre-sales. Most theaters will be showing it although curiously, 3 Newport theaters have left it off of their schedules.

Well, that was unexpected. I knew that The Midnight After would command a lot of pre-sales but what I am surprised about is that Naked Ambition 3D is beating Captain America 2. Very surprising that Captain America 2 could only muster 8 tickets outside of the night shows. Meanwhile, that is really good for The Midnight After. It obliterates everything at night and is doing better in the afternoon than both openers from last week. Overflow from the 7 PM showtimes will start to seep through to the 5 PM showings soon. Midnights are superb but it is strange that the 12:30 AM showing is doing better than the midnight showing. I will check back later tonight to see how much Captain America 2 improves and if it passes Naked Ambition. Pre-sales have been quite telling. The Midnight After is beating Captain America 2 everywhere including the business district. Even Yves Saint Laurent is rounding up more admissions than the superhero at the more expensive theaters. The Midnight After is nearly up 5:1 over Captain America 2 at The GRAND at night (that includes 3D Atmos, 3D and 2D versions for CA2). It has been complete domination by The Midnight After so far. I give The Midnight After 65% chance of winning this weekend. Captain America 2 can still pull this out but it really needs to pick up (higher ticket prices will not sell themselves). Even if it does 3/4 business of The Midnight After, it can still win. Weekend for The Midnight After will be key. After the opening day frenzy, it will need to sustain its opening day prowess through the weekend. Most Cat. III movies do not jump that high on the weekend so we will see if it follows that trend or if it deviates from it. Right now, I see The Midnight After opening with 1.3m this weekend and Captain America 2 tallying 1.1m ( -60%).

The Midnight After: +127 seats filled Captain America 2: +91 seats filled Naked Ambition: +72 seats filled Great for The Midnight After. With little to maneuver at night, tickets have started to shift to the 5 PM shows. All sections of the day saw some movement from morning to afternoon to night and to midnights. Much better for Captain America 2 at night. Troubling to see so many gooseeggs for it though. At least it passed Naked Ambition. Good for Naked Ambition. Guess the big local film counteracting it did not affect it that much.

About what was expected for The Midnight After. Since most night shows are filling up quite quickly, I'd say the target for today is around 25,000-26,000 admissions. Not good for Captain America 2, particularly since opening day was not frontloaded due to the Saturday holiday. Walk-ins will have to be brisk to pass The Midnight After today. Very good for Naked Ambition. The tepid reviews did not seem to hurt it. Yves Saint Laurent did OK. It is doing good at some locations but it has been weak in most. Noah tumbled again. Bad reviews really sunk this ship. Terrible for Enthralled. They should not have bothered to release it this week with two higher profile Cat. III releases. Great hold for Kano. Bad for The Chinese Puzzle. Twelve Nights is not doing well. It will leave Hong Kong soon. Divergent had a good hold but drops will be much hurder this weekend.

Very good number for The Midnight After. Not good for Captain America 2. Need to see its actual first though to see how much it fell from last week. Naked Ambition did well. Alright for Yves Saint Laurent. Still bad for Enthralled. Great for Kano. Awful for Noah. Mediocre for Divergent. Decent for The Chinese Puzzle. Weak for Nymphomaniac Volume 1.

Pretty good for The Midnight After. It should be able to do 28,000 today. Strong increase for Captain America 2. It's one of only 2 films in the top 10 to see a decrease from its Thursday pre-sales' week-to-week hold. Enormous jump for Kano. Let's take a look at Saturday showtimes for the top 2.

* The number in brackets refers to the number of biggest screens it is getting. Ex. if one film has 2 biggest screens while the other film has one, that means that particular theater has 3 screens that have the same number of seats. At Broadway, most theaters are giving the biggest screen to The Midnight After, however, those in the business district or those that cater more toward foreigners have given it to Captain America 2. UA, meanwhile, have done a 180 and has given the biggest screen to Captain America 2 on Saturday. Langham Place have split the biggest screens between Captain America 2 and The Midnight After with both occupying their own big screen all day. The GRAND has been a huge superhero supporter in the past so it is no surprise that they have put Captain America 2 way out in front in showtimes this weekend.

Re: HK 4/10: Will The Midnight After overpower CA2 for #1?
The Midnight after made $220,000 Thursday, compared to Due West's $160,000 2012 debut. But considering the enormous buzz (especially online) it had going into its release, Midnight will be quite frontloaded. Whether it will outdo Due West's $2.48M total remains to be seen.

Re: HK 4/10 THU: Captain America 2 vanishes; Midnight After
While The Midnight after sold more tickets, Captain America 2 should retain the top spot in weekend gross thanks to higher ticket price.
Enthralled, the directorial debut of columnist and radio show host Chip Tsao, was largely ignored, ranking only #6, behind French movie Yves Saint Laurent.

Maybe the film is not politically charged, but the movie trailer is full of allusions to current politics. Its source material is an internet novel published on HKGolden, an online forum known for its anti-establishment, libertarian leaning. It is obvious to me the movie's targeting the politically progressive and culturally localized.

HK: Other Woman leads new releases; Amazing Spider-Man 2 7 d
i.hope wrote: The Midnight after made $220,000 Thursday, compared to Due West's $160,000 2012 debut. But considering the enormous buzz (especially online) it had going into its release, Midnight will be quite frontloaded. Whether it will outdo Due West's $2.48M total remains to be seen. Due West had 3D. The Midnight After did not so it's OD is way more impressive than Due West. Looking ahead to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 next week, I fully expect it to make 6m in 6 days. It will take the OD record and should come close to 4m in 4 days. Its total should come in around 12-13m. Godzilla won't affect it too much but I expect X-Men: Days of Future Past to halt its chances of surpassing Iron Man 3. Taking a peek at pre-sales, at the iSQUARE IMAX, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is looking pretty solid.

The 8:20 AM showtime is filling up nicely. Strong pre-sales for the 10 PM session too. Over at regular theaters, pre-sales one week out are looking decent.

Pretty good numbers all around except for the 10 PM showtime. I see 4, possibly 5 screens for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 on Thursday.

Note: Aberdeen has not officially been released yet. It will officially come out on May 8. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is getting 4 screens mostly. Some places it is getting 3 screens and in others, it is getting 5 screens. At Broadway/AMC, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has been getting mostly 4 screens everywhere. In some theaters, like The One or Festival Walk, it has gotten 5 screens at varying points of the day. Apart from TASM 2, Aberdeen is launching with special screenings on Wednesday night and into Thursday. It is mostly playing with 3-4 showtimes at Broadway/AMC. This will take a slight chunk out of TASM 2's potential earnings tomorrow. Holdovers such as That Demon Within and The Other Woman remain for another week but for the others, they are getting the axe at different places. One movie that is not showing up on the admissions site, Heaven is for Real, is doing especially well at the theaters it is in and is being kept by all theaters it is showing at. Biggest losers this week are Captain America 2, Rio 2 and one-weeker Vampire Academy. TASM vs. TASM 2 Opening Day Showtimes ComparisonPalace APM: 33 showtimes vs. 28 showtimes Festival Walk: 32 showtimes vs. 30 showtimesTsuen Wan: 21 showtimes vs. 19 showtimes The Grand: 39 showtimes vs. 28 showtimes Apart from The Grand, everywhere is just slightly below TASM's showtime count on its opening day. Part of that is due to the longer running time of TASM 2 but I think it mostly comes from Aberdeen getting special screenings everywhere. I am surprised that it's getting so many showtimes everywhere on a big tentpole's opening day (even if it is a holiday). Normally, I do not include special screenings in showtime reports, however, this has had an impact on TASM 2's showtimes. Some good news for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 though...at Festival Walk, it has gotten a lot of morning showtimes. 9 showtimes in the morning. It also has gotten every house in the morning which is pretty incredible. Sadly, 2D has no morning showtimes so it does not tie the morning showtimes record set by The Avengers (with 10) here. Checking ticket sales one day out, at Palace APM, TASM 2 is looking alright.

Judging from these pre-sales though, it seems like it will begin with about 50,000 admissions on Thursday. Tomorrow we will look at UA scheduling, ticket prices, updated theater location pre-sales and of course, opening day pre-sales.

UA has put TASM 2 on 3 screens. The Other Woman and That Demon Within receive 2/3 of a screen while Aberdeen gets nearly full day showtimes. The rest of the showtimes that have not been allocated to those 4 movies have been left for the remaining holdovers to fight over. ____________________________________________________________ Ticket prices for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 are slightly more expensive than Captain America 2 depending on the theater chain. TASM 2 (vs. Captain America 2) Broadway/AMC: No Change UA: No Change/IMAX - +$5MCL: +$5Golden Harvest: No Change Adding a $5 mega blockbuster surcharge is smart for IMAX as they will shell out big money just to catch it on the big screen. MCL pushing for a $5 surcharge is good business. Definitely surprised that the other chains did not jack up the price as they could definitely get away with it. Frankly, they could only realistically do it to only 2 movies this summer (TASM 2/Transformers 4). Let's check in again at Palace APM to see how TASM 2 is doing.

It's off to a good start. There's still a lot of seats to be filled. It should be able to pass 80,000 admissions today. If seats really fill up, it could hit 90,000 admissions. No matter what, OD record is going down. It will make more than 1m.

Re: HK 5/1 THU: Amazing Spider-Man 2 ropes OD record
I always love it when a big movie is released because we get to see a lot of these...

Rank | Movie | LW | TW | % chg |
1 | The Amazing Spider-Man 2 | -- | 89,743 | -- |

Great number for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. It secures the OD record. OD estimate: $1,125,000 (new OD record)The Amazing Spider-Man 2 OW ProjectionsThu: $1,125,000 Fri: $650,000 Sat: $1,050,000 Sun: $975,000 4-day OW: $3,800,000 (#4 OW all-time; +36.8% from The Amazing Spider-Man OW) Opening day WOM for TASM 2 is mixed. Legs won't be very good although it does not need it. It will be either the #1 or #2 film of the year depending on Transformers 4's performance. Aberdeen had a slow start with previews. WOM is average but it seems with Pang Ho Cheung films, WOM does not really matter. If TASM 2 bleeds viewers next week, Aberdeen could become a strong runner-up for next weekend. Good number for The Other Woman. WOM is great and being the only female driven movie in the top 10 helps a lot too. Also nice for That Demon Within. 2m is not out of the picture just yet. Rio 2 fell hard but at least it passed the first one's total. Captain America 2 got rammed hard by The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Still, its box office has been spectacular. Passing 7m when the first did only 2.4m with very mixed WOM attached to it is a magnificent feat. The Midnight After is really fading away after all the buzz evaporated. Locals have turned to either That Demon Within or Aberdeen. Overall though, it is a success. Awful for the bottom 3.

Huge drop for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Some theaters gave more showtimes to The Other Woman/That Demon Within and combined with the holiday effect, it had a much larger drop compared with most other films. Very good for The Other Woman/That Demon Within. A lot of theaters are not showing Aberdeen today which is why it dropped a ton in pre-sales. Pretty heavy drops for the rest.

Re: HK 5/1 THU: Amazing Spider-Man 2 ropes OD record
Thursday actuals (May 1) 1. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - $1,233,114 ( opening day actual; 720 showtimes (new record); 130 people per showing) The Other Woman - $580,394 That Demon Within - $42,562/will make $2,063,624 by tomorrow Heaven is For Real - $154,771 Bilocation - $103,181 Iceman - $606,189 The Midnight After - will accumulate $2,644,018 by today Captain America: The Winter Soldier - $7,158,195 Kano - passing $515,906 tomorrow Incredible OD for TASM 2. Captain America 2 will pass Spider-Man 3 for #12 all time this weekend.

After that huge high, this is quite a low. It expended a lot of its business on the holiday and the long running time is shifting its admissions toward the weekend. Mixed WOM might already be starting to affect its admissions. We will know more on Saturday and Sunday. Very good for The Other Woman and That Demon Within. Aberdeen dropped hard due to loss of theaters today. The Midnight After had a great decrease. Not bad for Captain America 2. Harsh tumble for Rio 2. Good decreases for Bilocation and Naked Ambition. The Grand Budapest Hotel did well even though it got only 6 showtimes today.

Re: HK 5/1 THU: Amazing Spider-Man 2 ropes OD record
It's definitely the type of film that will do well on the mainland. I can see an Avatar-type total gross for it.

Re: HK 5/1 THU: Amazing Spider-Man 2 ropes OD record
That opening day record was largely due to the May 1st holiday and an almost empty market. Only two other movies opened in limited platform. Japanese horror Bilocation (#7) outsold Chinese road thriller No Man Land (#14) by 3-to-1. Another two movies were doing previews: Pang Ho Cheung's family drama Aberdeen and Japanese WWII drama (propaganda?) The Eternal Zero.

The Other Woman had a great hold, even with last week. Heaven Is for Real and Taiwanese baseball drama Kano also seemed unaffected by Spider-Man.

Disappointing for TASM 2. I expected a stronger jump on Saturday. Good for The Other Woman/That Demon Within. Nice for The Midnight After. Rio balloons on Saturday after the big Friday decrease. Captain America 2 rebounds from a heavier Friday drop. Huge gain for Kano on Saturday. It has gotten more weekend showtimes which is why it is back in the top 10 in admissions.

I thought it would jump up higher than that in pre-sales. Sunday looked much fuller than Saturday. Its weekend has definitely fizzled from its opening day.
| Weekend Projections | | | May 1 |
Rank | Movie | TW | % chg | Total |
1 | The Amazing Spider-Man 2 | $3,580,000 | -- | $3,580,000 |

4 | Rio 2 | $85,000 | -65.2% | $1,385,000 |
5 | Aberdeen | $80,000 | -- | $96,000 |
Looks like the holiday will account for more than 1/3 of its opening weekend. That opening weekend number would put it #5 all time behind Transformers 3, Iron Man 3, The Avengers and Harry Potter 7-2. ____________________________________________ X-Men: Days of Future Past has started pre-selling. So far ticket sales are kind of slow but it is still 3 weeks away.

I wonder why Heaven Is for Real is not being tracked on wmoov.com. Is it because they are selling tickets through other channels (e.g. group bookings)? or for other reasons (e.g. distributor's demand, political pressure)?
It could've been the site's mess-up.

Spidey saw a muted decrease thanks to people taking Monday off and higher pre-selling on Sunday. Not bad for mostly everything else. Great bump for Rio 2. Good increase for Captain America 2.

A bit troubling to see that TASM is catching up to TASM 2. TASM will pass TASM 2 in admissions on Monday but TASM 2 will come back on Tuesday.

Very good opening for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Yes, it did slightly below what I expected but it at least took the OD record by force and reins in the 5th biggest OW of all time. The Other Woman held impressively. WOM is very strong here. It should remain a bit player for the next few weeks. That Demon Within also did pretty well. Do not let that 63% fool you. It had to contend with Aberdeen stealing away showtimes. Not a great hold for Rio 2. Aberdeen did alright for special sneaks on Thursday/Friday. It could've been the site's mess-up. I think it's the site's problem. All of the theaters showing Heaven is for Real are being tracked by wmoov.

Do you have an updated list of the top 10 highest grossing films and an OW record?

Screen Daily wrote: Hong Kong $3.7m from 207 So The Amazing Spider-Man 2 might have clinched #4 OW all time. We'll need to see more concrete actuals first. Top 10 OW's1. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is eerily reminding me of Clash of the Titans. Clash of the Titans had a great first 4-days (with OW falling on a holiday weekend) and then it imploded afterwards. It will still easily be the #2 film of the year by a mile.

That Demon Within was pulverized by Aberdeen and Delete My Love. Mild start for The Past. Harsh for Captain America 2. Weak for Bilocation. Very good for Kano. Sloppy hold for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Not great for Aberdeen. Transcendence is doing well with all the competition. Good for The Other Woman. Bad for Delete My Love.
