I still find it strange to consider how the budgets for the X-Men franchise went from the gaudy $210 million spent on The Last Stand (in 2006, no less) to a somewhat more conservative $120-160 million range for the next three movies.

Well two of the movies that came out after it were solo Wolverine flicks and the other was a semi reboot/prequel. Obviously, not having most of the original cast back helped ALOT.

I'm sure the budget for DOFP will exceed $200M though. It could be even higher than TLS.

How much did Superman Returns, Valkyrie and Jack the Giant Slayer cost?
That would give us an indication of DOFP production budget

I also think it will exeed 200m at least, a lot of talent is being put on screen for this film

That's excellent budget for Wolverine. I believe it would cost $200m with marketing budget included. Regardless with the "official" budget it needs about $250m WW to start earning money. It should clear $300m WW for sure.

I could easily see DoFP being the most expensive X-Men movie. The cast payroll must be high. Fox is banking on the X-Men universe to be their big money makers in the future, so they'll go all out I'd imagine.

X-Men universe could catch on with the superhero combination doing good with the audience. The biggest problem with X-Men is that its really really hard to concentrate on few key characters when every second character in the movie is a mutant or superhero.

If there's anyone who can pull it off, though, it's Singer. Vaughn did a very good job with First Class, but it's not up at the level of X2.

It's cute that people still think X2 is great. It's every bit as lifeless as most of Singer's output. There's no style or sense of urgency to it whatsoever.

I disagree. X2 introduces cool characters like Nightcrawler, Pyro, Stryker and his henchwoman; moves forward all of the original characters, and balances quieter character-based special effects with cool set pieces and some social commentary.

X3 cost that much because the cast asked for major pay increase and the whole production was really rushed so they had to hire more people for everything.

$120m for Elysium is a great budget for what it is looking. It looks like someone spent $150m-$$180m on that movie so that budget is really good IMO.

The amazing thing about the X3 budget is that the movie is only 104min long - per minute it must be one of the most expensive movies ever made..

Agreed with all of that, but more importantly it gave the fans of X-Men what they wanted from Wolverine. The hype of the trailers was realised on screen. It's still the definitive comicbook movie and/or comicbook sequel for many.

X2 is amazing. Incredibly exciting and also moving. I prefer it to The Dark Knight.

That's decent but the marketing on this one has been weak as it gets closer to the release date IMO.

Impressive that they were able to cut down the budget for the sequel of Smurfs. It surely would be profitable for the studios.
