Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
By all means, go all-out projecting or hoping for certain numbers! I just don't want people thinking anything it's doing right now is bad. It's just begun its decline to reach the highest levels of the biggest films before it as it begins its FOURTH week soon. Its fourth weekend is going to be about on par with the biggest opening weekends ever, maybe cracking the top 10 biggest opening weekends even... just think about that.
Enjoy the performance, don't think a couple days (and they'll be more to come) are bad, and don't try to rush things to get an end result figure ASAP. Seriously, something like this isn't happening ever again. Or, if it does (never say never), we all might be 6 feet under and won't be witnessing it!

It’s only going to bank up ¥20B or so before dropping to normal Uber-blockbuster first week levels. At this rate how can we possibly hope to beat Wolf Warrior 2? Sad

Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demon Slayer) manga sold an additional 2,249,535 copies last week, bringing its 2020 yearly sales up to 78,038,111 with three weeks left in the Oricon year. And lifetime sales are now 92,767,535 copies. Note: These are physical sales only.
2020 sales with digital included are likely over 90 million, perhaps closing in on 100 million (not official, just estimating). And the lifetime circulation figure is probably around 120 million by now (again, not official, just estimating).
Final 2020 yearly sales will be announced in three weeks or so, and the lifetime sales/circulation figures should be updated when the final volume releases on December 4th.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
Note that while raising the level to 3 in Hokkaido sounds bad, the country itself has been level 3 since the summer. Sort of a click-bait headline there.
And daily cases are still below where they were back in July/August (theaters were already fully reopened and expanded to 50% capacity then). Especially if Tokyo continues to just add 200 cases or so a day, there isn't much to worry about. Tokyo even raised the level to its highest back in July (then lowered it back in September) and theaters remained opened and the box-office thrived.
Unless there are significant jumps, like 500 a day in Tokyo and 1,500-2,000 nationwide, there isn't likely to be much of an impact, if any, on the box office. Worst I'd expect are theaters going back to 50% capacity over the weekends again in the Winter.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
Friday is up versus Thursday, and about on par with Wednesday (in gross), I believe. That's been the normal trend for it, Monday > Friday/Wednesday > Tuesday > Thursday, so I wouldn't worry yet.
And its fourth Friday is bigger than any of the second Fridays for the films (the four biggest films since 2017, excluding Bohemian Rhapsody since it was one of the leggiest films ever and didn't post any big numbers, just consistently good ones for many months to reach its total) that I listed above.

Ok thank you, so if I summarize Demon Slayer will be around 14,1 millions admissions and $179M by today, not far from the predictions you made some days ago ($181,6M and 14,3 millions admissions)

Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
As for the weekend, just check out the reservations for it on Saturday and Sunday at the locations below: https://hlo.tohotheater.jp/net/schedule ... 2000J01.dohttps://hlo.tohotheater.jp/net/schedule ... 2000J01.dohttps://hlo.tohotheater.jp/net/schedule ... 2000J01.dohttps://hlo.tohotheater.jp/net/schedule ... 2000J01.doIf you need help understanding, just ask. But they're quite good. Not as good as last weekend, of course, especially Sunday, but I don't see a huge drop this weekend, probably right in line with the 30/40% dip it's expected to take. I think it has to drop over 50% (maybe even 55%) to miss the fourth weekend record. So... yeah, it's doing very well. I usually wait until 4/5 hours or so before Saturday begins to share these, so they'll improve further since it's 7/8 hours out right now. Just want to assure everyone that it's looking good early. You're NOT going to see a 20% drop or something coming off a prior weekend that had a discount day fall on it. I can look up examples if people want, but 30% is considered a strong hold coming off those weekends.

I believe that this past Saturday-Tuesday frame acted like a four-day weekend due to the discount day on Sunday and the holiday on Tuesday, just pushed a good deal of business that Wednesday-Friday would have seen up to them. When I post the Biggest Fourth Weekends/Four Week Totals list later today when I add my updated prediction for Demon Slayer to it, you'll see how far ahead it still is. It's going to easily take the fourth weekend record, and with the exception of Spirited Away, its four week total will be 2-3x higher than the previous biggest four week totals. And it'll still be around 90% ahead of Spirited Away, nearly double, too. And if you would completely erase the past two weeks all together, its two-week total is still higher than the four week totals of EVERYTHING.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
It seems the coronavirus in Japan is getting worse. Question: if the high drop in these days is because of coronavirus rather than because people lose interest in the movie/ the movie already ran out of audience, then can we expect a more leggy run ? Low gross each day but it just continue and continie....

Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
Having 1 day get back to 1,000 cases after 2 months is way too early to say if COVID is getting worse. The increase is mostly related to the Hokkaido prefecture up north as cases have remained near normal levels in Tokyo and elsewhere.
The drops are more likely due to how strong Saturday-Tuesday was due to the discount day and holiday. They're STILL bigger than the first weekdays of the biggest films that came before it.
Cases have declined in the past two days, including Tokyo which remains very low. Unless cases begin to reach July/August levels (1,500 cases a day), I don't believe it's going to have an impact. And if it does, theaters will likely go back to 50% capacity. This would slow the run down and make it leggier. Theaters reopened back in June, stayed open after cases reached new heights in July/August and even expanded their capacity during that time. The chances of them closing is very slim.
Let's see how the weekend goes. If the drop is over 40/45% (still plenty to achieve the biggest fourth weekend ever), there might be an argument that cases hitting 1,000 again for the first time in 2 months, but have since dropped below 1,000 again, is slowing it down.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
EDIT: Just saw that Friday also came in above 1,000 cases (1,143). Remember that daily cases have been between 500-800 or so for months on end now. This is a spike from that average, don't want to undersell it or anything, but it's still pretty low and not up to July/August levels.
This will just have to be a wait and see situation. Until there's evidence of an impact, don't worry too much. The box-office did very well in August when cases hit record levels, got a blockbuster from it, and two films outperform their predecessors, so keep that in mind as well.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
When we can see it has small drop and continue to have small drop again and again? (Stabilize) and at that time will the gross already be so small to have any impact? Is 31.8B yen of Spirited Away still on the table?

Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
I know it's hard to be patient and wait (not an insult, it IS hard to wait! lol), but the next normal to normal day compariso-n is going to be next Wednesday (11/11). Tomorrow, Friday, might be somewhat of a close comparison, but it's possible last Friday was slightly deflated from people waiting until Sunday (discount day). Obviously this Sunday is going to be way down, especially in admissions. And next Monday and Tuesday, especially Tuesday (holiday), will be way down from the holiday effect this past week.
So... next Wednesday is the next normal day to normal day comparison we've got.
And yes, Spirited Away is still likely to fall. I don't want to call it a 100% lock, but it's a very high chance. Demon Slayer's fourth weekend will be over 50%, probably closer to 75%, higher than Spirited Away's, and the four week total will be almost double. Demon Slayer needs severe declines soon if it's going to miss the record (or something major to happen regarding COVID).
It took Spirited Away 9-weeks (plus a few extra days) to reach where Demon Slayer will be after this Sunday, its 4th week.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
I think during the week when this movie gross is somehow similar to Frozen 2' first week gross. Then we can take DS gross + 13.35 B yen (Frozen 2 total gross) to know the final gross, lol

- Best Month in Oricon's history : February 2020, from February 3rd to March 1st with 9 306 393 sales. Best month in Oricon's history is now October 2020 with 11,571,206 units btw. Edit: Ah, I see you've edited your post, sorry. Other random records are best first/third/fourth/fifth week for a volume with volume 22. It doesn't have best second week yet, it still belongs to One Piece 67.
