50. The Sorcerer's Apprentice (Disney) - Y1.0 billion ($12.2 million)

*If Avatar's re-release in included in it's total, and the overall total converted with the re-release, the USD total would come to $187 million (BOM has this figure, but I'm still not sure if that's honestly "fair").

57 films were reported to have grossed Y1 billion or more this year, so those 7 missing will be added when available.

I believe a few missing are smaller releases, such as Outrage, that remained in theaters for an extended period with tracking ending before they left theaters. The Kamen Rider Trilogy this past Summer may also be included as a single film entry, rather than three individual releases given they were released within 6 weeks apart. And The Expendables fell off the charts when it reached about Y900 million, so if it remained in a few theaters long enough it likely crawled to the Y1 billion milestone. Similar case with Mobile Suit Gundam 00: Awaking of the Trailblazer.

I don't like 2011's chances matching this. Much of 2011's success will be rest on Pirates 4 in 3D, and whether it can see another increase in the series. Each film has increased from the last so far (Pirates 2 and 3 topping their respetive years, too), with Pirates 3 grossing Y10.9 billion ($133 million with the current exchange rate).

Morning and Day ticket sales for Saturday at the usual locations are showing Harry Potter is doing exceptionally well, slightly outpacing Partners II and Space Battleship Yamato.

Partners II and Space Battleship Yamato attract much older audiences than Harry Potter, so they could still be earning more in gross. Either way, this weekend is looking to be much closer now based on early ticket sales.

Also, Happy New Year!

It was reported that Space Battleship Yamato exceeded 2.6 million admissions; 3 billion yen ($37 million) as of 12/31 as it headed into the New Year Weekend. Should be looking at about 3.2 billion ($40 million) after this weekend.

It and Harry Potter have been tracking closely for the past few weeks, so Harry Potter 7 "may" have hit 4.8 million admissions, for about Y5.7 billion ($70 million) as of 12/31 and probably $73/74 million after this weekend. Looks to be adding $8-10 million or so to it's total last weekend ($64.7 million) for the Holiday Week.

Post subject:  Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Top 2010 Films Posted

The release dates (practically the same every year for the annual releases) for the usual anime films have been unveiled:

Doraemon (Movie 31): Nobita and the New Steel Troops: Angel Wings - March 5, 2011
One Piece/Toriko 3D Double Feature - March 19, 2011
Detective Conan (Movie 15): 15 Minutes of Silence - April 16, 2011
Crayon Shin-chan (Movie 19): The Storm Called The Golden Spy Mission - April 16, 2011
Fullmetal Alchemist (Movie 2): The Sacred Stars of Milos - July 2, 2011
Pokemon (Movie 14) Black & White: Best Wish - July 16, 2011
Naruto (Movie 8): Unknown Title - Summer 2011 (likely July 30)
Evangelion 3.0: You Will (Not) Understand - Summer 2011 Rumored

All are confirmed except for Evangelion 3.0, but it's highly likely it's going to be released this year. Evangelion 2.0 was released in June of 2009, so maybe a June release for 3.0 as well. However, there are also rumors the final film in the Rebuild of Evangelion (4.0) may be released with 3.0. Perhaps we'll see 3.0 this summer, and 4.0 in the fall/winter. Nothing confirmed at the moment.

Evangelion 2.0 was quite huge in 2009, opening on less than 200 screens and pulled in a pta over $45,000 for the 2-day. The film went on to have great legs, and finish with 4 billion yen ($44 million in 2009). A substantial increase over 1.0. Factor in the huge DVD/Blu-Ray sales of Evangelion 2.0 (2nd biggest DVD of 2010; and biggest Blu-Ray of 2010), and Evangelion 3.0 will definitely be one to watch out for.

And there is a good chance this will be the last Fullmetal Alchemist with both the anime and manga being finished now. The latest film opens right after the Fullmetal Alchemist Festival in Tokyo this Summer, with all the cast and crew taking part.

Shikoku usually updates by now, so I'm assuming New Year is going to delay them this weekend.

Anyway, I've included a poll for readers to participate in.

If Option 1 wins, I will compare the Weekend Top 10 to the same weekend of the previous year every Wednesday in the Weekend Summary (which I will be posting in Yen, in addition to USD, starting this week). This new feature could help track the monthly or yearly Box Office results in greater detail.

If Option 2 wins, I will post the Most Popular 10 or 20 films (probably from Eiga.com or Yahoo.co.jp) of the week every Thursday. This new feature could help determine which future releases (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides vs Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 vs From Kokuriko Hill (new Ghibli), this summer for example) are appearing stronger.

Vote away.

So where is Harry Potter heading?

Author:  Corpse [ Mon Jan 03, 2011 10:40 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Rankings

It should be around Y5.9 billion ($72 million) after New Year, and has a good shot at finishing with Y7 billion ($85.5 million) or a little more. Another sizable drop in Yen and Admissions for the franchise, but on the bright side it'll pretty much be on par with the previous three films in USD thanks to the exchange rate. The previous three films finished with $88-90 million.

I'll post something in more detail later.

As for New Year Weekend,

Harry Potter increased 30% compared to last week.
Yamato increased 40% compared to last week.
Abacus and Sword climbs back into the Top 10 also increasing 40% compared to last week.

And that is about all that's known for the weekend so far besides the Top 10 Admission Rankings that I already posted. But I'll update when more becomes available.

Post subject:  Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Rankings

Harry Potter Comparison:

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (WB) -Y20.3 billion ($152.9 million), 16.2 million admissions
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (WB) - Y17.3 billion ($142 million), -15%, 13.8 million admissions
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (WB) - Y13.5 billion ($121.9 million), -22%, 10.8 million admissions
Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire (WB) - Y11.5 billion ($90.49 million), -15%, 9.2 million admissions
Harry Potter and the Order Of The Phoenix (WB) - Y9.4 billion ($88.36 million), -15%, 7.5 million admissions
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (WB) - Y8.0 billion ($88.46 million), -15%, 6.4 million admissions
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I (WB) - Y7.1 billion ($86.7 million), -11%, 5.6 million admissions

The drops are in Yen, and admissions are estimates using an average ticket price of Y1250 which is the avg. ticket price for the Deathly Hallows Part I, and should be close to the others since the avg. ticket price has remained mostly the same for over a decade.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I's total is of course a projection.

Losing 15% of it's audience with each film became a trend I see. At least the Deathly Hallows Part I looks to hold on to a little more for the franchise this time. And if Deathly Hallows Part 2 drops in admissions, 3D will assure it'll break the decade long downward spiral in gross.

Yeah, Shrek Forever After is going to struggle to reach $10 million.

In Yen, and especially Admissions, it looks even worse when compared to the previous three films.

Yen:

Shrek - Y2 billion.
Shrek 2 - Y2.5 billion.
Shrek The Third - Y1.55 billion.

Shrek Forever After isn't going to reach Y1 billion.

New update for Yamato: Space Battleship Yamato has grossed Y3,374,998,140 ($40.6 million); 2,775,776 admissions after 35 days. Still looking good for over Y4 billion ($50 million+).

Partners 2 also exceeded Y1.6 billion ($19 million), but the day wasn't available. My guess would be as of Wednesday. Probably looking at Y3.5 billion, possibly Y4 billion for it.

This weekend sees only one wide opener: The Unstoppable.
