Wednesday - Y200 million or more estimate ($2.5 million), 200,000 estimated admissions.
Thursday and Friday - Y150-175 million ($1.8-2 million), 160,000-180,000 admissions.
Weekend - Y450-500 million ($5.5-6 million), 350,000-375,000 admissions.

Opening Week - Y800-875 million ($9.5-10.5 million), 700,000-725,000 admissions.

A Y1 billion opening week is still possible, but Wednesday's discount tickets make it pretty difficult.

And the weekend itself will be close between it and Deathly Hallows third weekend for the #1 ranking. Half-Blood Prince grossed Y533,858,690 ($6.4 million using today's exchange rate), and Order of the Phoenix grossed Y477,797,745 ($5.7 million using today's exchange rate).

So the forecast suggests that SBY will take over HP7.1 afterall. Great opening

Yes, and with the usual locations (10-15% of the market) having reported Saturday admissions (before the first showings) this hour, it's pretty certain Yamato will open at #1 this weekend.

Space Battleship Yamato was dead even (99.1%) with SP: The Motion Picture's opening Saturday. SP: The Motion Picture opened to Y529 ($6.5 million), so Y500m ($6.1 million) or more is looking highly likely for Space Battleship Yamato this weekend. Harry Potter 7 will need a 15% drop or better to top that, and that's not going to happen.

We should be looking at a 5-day breakdown:

Opening Day (Wednesday) - Y200 million ($2.5 million)
Thursday and Friday - Y150-175 million ($1.8-2.1 million)
Opening Weekend (Saturday and Sunday) - Y500-550 million ($6.1-6.6 million)

Opening Week (5-day) - Y850-925 million ($10.5-11.5 million).

I'm still hoping the opening day increases from the initial estimate, and Sunday is stronger than SP: The Motion Picture so it can achieve the Y1 billion ($12 million) milestone.

With THR's $5.4m (approx. Y440 million) /$45.3m (approx. Y3.8 billion) estimate, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows looks to be struggling.

It's three week total is going to be well below Y4 billion, which shouldn't have been difficult to achieve. So it failed to add Y1b ($12m) for the entire week, and drops to No.2.

After three weeks:

So... by far the lowest three week total goes to Deathly Hallows. It was ahead of the most recent installments in USD last weekend, but now it's fallen behind there as well. There is New Year, but after a third weekend almost 50% less than GOF's, and GOF going on to add Y6.5 billion after this weekend, the best I see Deathly Hallows doing now is crawling past Y7 billion ($85 million).

The performance so far is a bit underwhelming, but perhaps expected after cancelling the 3D plans seeing as attendance drops significantly with each film.

It's a little bit weird. Look like rather good weekend but very weak midweek grosses.

It should have added roughly Y600/650 million over the weekdays, and Y450/500 million (looks to be lower, but close enough) for the weekend. That would have given it about Y4.1 billion ($50 million). Instead though, the weekdays only added like Y450 million, about equal to it's weekend. Having the weekday gross drop 25/30% from the previous weekend is a bit concerning.

Many of the users on the 2ch forums I post with believe it's going to be a hit thanks to it being the first major 3D release since Umizaru 3, and there are very few kid/family films this December (Narnia doesn't open until Feb. 25th, and Tangled sometime in March). There also has yet to be an event film that's been in 3D not to exceed expecations. Tron will probably do $40/50 million.

The weekend estimate for Space Battleship Yamato has been released: Y519 million ($6.3 million), which is the second biggest opening weekend for a local release in December (though could be bumped to third biggest when Partners: The Movie II comes out later this month).

So we have:

Wednesday - Y200 million ($2.5 million) - still the estimate.
Thursday and Friday - ???
Saturday and Sunday - Y519 million ($6.3 million).

The 5-day figure should be released soon, still looks like Y850/900 million ($10.5-11.5 million) or a little more.

Very strong start, and should give it a minimum of Y4.5/5 billion ($55-60 million). I'll be hoping for as much as Y6 billion ($72.5 million).

The live-action film adaptation of the science-fiction anime Space Battleship Yamato was seen 791,012 times on its way to earning 943,995,550 yen (about US$11.4 million) in five days. The film's distributor TOHO made the announcement on Monday. The film was seen 412,129 times and made 528,215,150 yen (US$6.4 million) during the December 4-5 weekend alone, which put the film at #1 on the weekend box office chart.

According to a survey conducted by computer and by mobile phone, the audience for the space opera film was 52% male and 48% female. 44.4% of the audience were in their 40s, followed by 19.0% in their 30s, 15.1% in their 50s, and 12.9% in their 20s. (The first Space Battleship Yamato television anime series premiered in 1974.) 54.5% were company workers, while 16.3% were homemakers.

31.9% said that the desire "to see the live-action version of Yamato" was their reason for going. 21.7% said that the reason was that they "like the animated Yamato." 15.8% said the reason was because it was a "film starring Takuya Kimura." 5.3% cited the amazing visual effects.

38-year-old SMAP band member Takuya Kimura (Howl's Moving Castle's Howl) headlines this film based on the anime classic, which was adapted as Star Blazers in English. The other cast members include Meisa Kuroki (Vexille - 2077 Isolation of Japan's Vexille, Crows Zero's Luca), Toshiro Yanagiba, and Tsutomu Yamazaki. Takashi Yamazaki, the director best known for Returner, Always: Sunset on Third Street, and last year's Ballad, helmed the project for a December 1 release. Aerosmith vocalist Steven Tyler wrote and sang the film's theme song, "Love Lives."

Space Battleship Yamato debuts to the second highest local December Opening Weekend ever, behind last year's One Piece Film Strong World.

With almost 800,000 admissions during it's first 5-days in release, and a very strong start in gross as well, nothing less than Y5 billion (about $60 million) should be achieved which would make it the biggest local December release ever (if Partners: The Movie II doesn't beat it later this month). The live-action adaptation of the classic 70's anime has one of the highest budgets for a local release, coming in at Y2.1 billion (about $25 million).

The big screen version of the classic 1974 anime stars Takuya Kimura and has already been sold to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, France and Germany, with negotiations in progress for a U.S. release.

Godzilla-like distributor, Toho, is off to another dominating year it would appear.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows sees a good third weekend, but it's down in admissions and yen compared to it's predecessors. It's still a little early to project a very accurate finish range, but Y7-7.5 billion ($85-90 million) looks most likely at the moment.

The fourth film in the Bleach Series, Hell Arc, debuts to a franchise high celebrating 10 years since the start of the manga. The film will cross Y1 billion ($12 million) eventually.

Abacus and Sword opens well, and gives Asmik Ace an early hit film for the studio.

SP: The Motion Picture is coming closer to reaching $40 million now after six weeks in release. The popular police drama won't have any trouble getting there on it's own, but the New Year boost in three weeks will assure it a total closer to $45 million.

The sequel will be release this March.

Despicable Me is still holding strong after six weeks in release as well. $16 million is looking good.

Kiss & Kill (The Killers) was barely given a wide release, reflecting the average opening here. The film will probably finish with just about $2 million.

As I've mentioned before, Ghost has made up for it's weak opening with some strong legs, particularly during the weekdays. $10 million is locked up now.

Heart Catch Pretty Cure takes a dip this weekend, but it's almost matched the gross of it's predecessor from March anyway. The next film in the series opens this coming March.

Paranormal Activity manages a third week in the Top 10, aiming for a $2.5 million total.

The Japan Box Office Year ends the last day of November, and begins the first day of December.

So, for instance, Space Battleship Yamato (and the other openers this past weekend) will be counted as 2011 releases. As a result, they will not be included in any of the charts below. After several weeks into the new Box Office Year, I'll post weekly chart updates for 2011.

I will continue to update the 2010 charts below until Umizaru 3, Security Police, and Harry Potter end their runs, however.
