Good hold for Monsters University. It had unbelievable pre-selling last week so pre-sale holds should be quite large. Decent for Pacific Rim. I wouldn't call it terrible. It did OK. Pacific Rim's best chance of winning in admissions and gross is today because tomorrow it should be fairly frontloaded while Monsters University will increase and Monsters University should have a pretty good sized bump on the weekend. Gigantic hold for Despicable Me 2. Turbo didn't do much and it's not going to do much with Monsters University and Despicable Me 2 ahead. SDU: Sex Duties Unit is having good sneak previews. Terrible hold for Tales from the Dark 1. OK for Blind Detective. Slow for I'm So Excited. Not bad for World War Z. Man of Steel's time is about done.
Re: HK: Pacific Rim drops in but will scheduling ruin #1 cha
Another storm will affect HK tomorrow and the weekend. It's expected to skirt to the east of Hong Kong but it should give us some heavy rains and gusty winds. T1 signal is already in force.
UA is abandoning ship with Pacific Rim. They have dropped it from 3 to 2 screens this weekend and gave the bigger screen to Monsters University. Pre-sales shows Monsters University leading by a significant margin at almost all UA locations.

Good hold for Monsters University. Nice opening for Pacific Rim. Solid hold for Despicable Me 2 although weekend might get a little rough. Turbo was as slow as a snail today. Poor for Tales from the Dark Part 1. SDU: Sex Duties Unit is rolling out with sneak previews all this week. Interesting that the decision to give city wide sneaks was made after last weekend's solid night previews. Blind Detective dropped pretty harsh. I'm So Excited had an acceptable opening from 5 theaters. World War Z got trounced by Pacific Rim. Man of Steel and Now You See Me fell sharply.
From those admissions, Monsters University is looking at a 2nd Thursday gross of $351,000 (-46%). Pacific Rim has higher ticket prices so it might have made $330,000. That is $80,000 more than Prometheus's opening day ($250,000, minus previews). Factoring in those previews, however, and Pacific Rim is behind by $33,000 ($363,000).

Note: Toy Story 3's 2nd Friday admissions are estimated. Those admissions are lower than final figures.
So Monsters University is closing the gap. It performed very well today given how Pacific Rim was going to be slightly frontloaded. Of course, the weekend will put more distance between it and Toy Story 3. Most theaters are not budging on the number of showtimes for Monsters University this weekend.
Re: HK 7/18 THU: Monsters vs Aliens..Monsters wins; Wolverin
Three animated releases topping the chart. Summer vacation must have started there.
That's a pretty good number for Almodovar's "I'm So Excited".

Yeah, summer vacation started last Friday.
It's pretty good if you look at all the raw numbers for I'm So Excited but I'm always wary of these types of limited openers. They can be severely affected by the Cinematheque stronghold.

Great for MU. Monsters University could get up to 37,000 admissions today. Pacific Rim did alright but it should only post a slight increase. Good still for Despicable Me 2 although being put on the smaller screens means a lot less walk-ins. Weak for Turbo. Surprise surprise, SDU: Sex Duties Unit has the 2nd best increase of the top 10. Tales from the Dark Pt. 1, Blind Detective, World War Z and Man of Steel all saw sloppy holds. I'm So Excited is doing good.
Ok, so I don't know what happened on Saturday but UA is going full tilt in favor of Pacific Rim on Sunday. They have dropped the number of showtimes for Monsters University and given back the bigger screen to Pacific Rim.
Scheduling has been really strange the past few weeks.
Re: HK 7/18 THU: Monsters vs Aliens..Monsters wins; Wolverin
Internet is down hence the lack of comprehensive updates. Monsters University roped in 54,041 admissions on Saturday, -36% from last week. Pacific Rim is 2nd with 41,986 admissions.
Sunday: Monsters U has squeezed out 40,534 admissions with pre-selling. Pacific Rim is far back in 2nd with 22,631 admissions.

I'm disappointed in Monsters University's increases this weekend. It should have hit 56,000 admissions on Saturday. But it's still a good hold overall. Pacific Rim is doing quite well. WOM is pretty good.

Have I ever used any other currency? :P
Roughly 6.7m. That would put it $370,000 behind Toy Story 3 after 11 days.

Not sure, but it's a better indication for me than writing the number of admissions it gets 'cause I don't know how much it translates to $$$$$$$$$

Admissions are still screwy for Monsters U this week. Don't know why but it's really only affecting Monsters U so I wouldn't be surprised if it gets bumped up to 6.8m in finals. Another weird thing is that the person who reports the box office numbers for HK had much lower figures for Monsters U's opening day and opening weekend last week. I had to get the numbers from Disney and compare the two numbers. Disney's numbers were much more in line with official reports.

And the ones from Mojo?, where do they come from?

Re: HK 7/18 THU: Monsters vs Aliens..Monsters wins; Wolverin
I heard Mojo gets their numbers from direct sources. The only problem is that Mojo uses some weird exchange rate for movies. That's why there are some differences in weekend grosses/totals in their reports and official sites.
For example, Hangover 3 officially passed After Earth's total by day 8 but it took Mojo 4 weeks (on Man of Steel's opening weekend) before they declared Hangover 3 ahead of After Earth. Mojo is also prone to huge mistakes ala the Avatar fiasco of 2010 or missing movies such as World War Z's disappearance from the July 4 weekend.

It's a total sham that Monsters University lost admissions today. If Man of Steel can gain 34% on a Sunday, Monsters University should have at least added 10% from yesterday. Yes, it did lose admissions again today and yesterday.

July 18 Weekend Actuals
1. Monsters University - $6,807,529 [$2,007,000 WKD (-39.6%)] 2. Pacific Rim - $1,613,904 (opening weekend actual) 3. Despicable Me 2 - $3,183,980 [$328,000 WKD (-42.1%)] 4. Turbo - $306,796 (opening weekend actual) 5. Tales from the Dark Pt. 1 - $855,936 [$177,000 WKD (-63.2%)] 6. Blind Detective - $1,811,130 [$156,000 WKD (-54.8%)] 7. Man of Steel - $4,253,900 [$26,000 WKD (-82.6%)]
Monsters University snatches the 5th biggest 2nd weekend of all time behind Avatar, Iron Man 3, Toy Story 3 and The Avengers. Huge weekend. Pacific Rim did well. Good hold for Despicable Me. Turbo had the weakest opening weekend of all the Hollywood animation releases this summer but it has the best reviews out of the 4. Tales from the Dark 1 is coming down fast.
Re: HK 7/18: Monsters U conquers Pacific Rim; Wolverine/Sex
Wolverine has started pre-selling at MCL. Tickets have been selling faster than Pacific Rim but that is due to it being a sequel.

3 days out and is doing slightly better than Pacific Rim.
The Wolverine should be able to do 1.7m this weekend with 3D and increased ticket prices. X-Men Origins: Wolverine did 1m in 5-days so nearly doubling its opening weekend should not be much of a stretch for The Wolverine here. It faces off against SDU: Sex Duties Unit which has gotten a head start with early previews the last 2 weeks. I see about $900,000 for SDU.

Big surprise win for Monsters University here. I know Monsters University has great pre-sales but to see it doing better than The Wolverine in pre-selling at some locations is astonishing. The only downside here is that most of Monsters University's admissions are for 2D. 3D is still doing quite well in the morning and with 7 PM showtimes. The Wolverine is doing pretty good. Its 2D 9 AM showing is doing great and 3D is not looking too bad either. If we strip out SDU: Sex Duties Unit's blocked off seats for each showtime, it actually falls to #3 behind The Wolverine which means pre-sales aren't doing so great. It could be due to having 2 weeks of special previews but word of mouth has been rancid, which was totally the opposite effect that Media Asia was going for. Pacific Rim's been affected by The Wolverine so this explains its extremely slow pre-sales.
Elsewhere, The Wolverine is well out in front while Monsters University and SDU: Sex Duties Unit vie for #2.
July 25 Predictions
1. The Wolverine - $1,700,000 2. Monsters University - $1,100,000 (-45.2%) 3. SDU: Sex Duties Unit - $825,000 (including previews) 4. Pacific Rim - $750,000 (-53.5%) 5. Despicable Me 2 - $170,000 (-48.2%)
The Wolverine will be the lone wolf on top. Huge 3D premiums will boost its gross. Monsters University will fend off SDU and Doraemon well. SDU: Sex Duties Unit will keep close with Monsters University on Thursday and Friday but the weekend belongs to Monsters University. III movies are usually frontloaded as well. Pacific Rim will be in direct competition with The Wolverine but WOM is very good. Despicable Me 2 should get the nod over Doraemon for #5. Though last year's Doraemon did well, this year has too much competition for Doraemon to set a new high. Doraemon will likely begin in 6th place with $140,000. If these predictions (esp. The Wolverine's) hold, this July would be first July month ever to have 3 weekends hit 4m or more.

Good for The Wolverine. I expect a lot of walk-ins today. Considering how many theaters put Monsters University out to pasture, that is a strong hold. Walk-ins have been a thorn in Monsters University's side though. Pacific Rim had a very good with The Wolverine striking at the heart of its demographic. Slightly disappointing for Sex Duties Unit but it could be poor WOM setting in. It should have very strong walk-ins today. Great for Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum. This is up 26% in opening day pre-sales from Doraemon: Nobita and the Island of Miracles - Animal Adventure. Despicable Me 2 held well. Turbo did quite good as well. Tiny Times is a disaster. Bad hold again for Tales from the Dark Part 1. Good for Disconnect.
