It's doing very well in Asia. Opening #1 in Malaysia, Thailand and UAE. Not playing so strongly elsewhere yet. But the early strength in Asia bodes well for China and Japan. It's usually countries that stay loyal where Arnold and Sly's fanbase come out of the woodwork.

Still some big territories ahead like France, Germany, Spain, China, Japan, Australia. It opened in Italy and the UK this weekend to not much of a fanfare. It pretty muched bombed in Mexico and Brazil.

$70m budget will be made up just from the international receipts, I am sure.

Opened #1 in Taiwan with a gross of $360,000 (3 times larger than second place Gravity).

Asia is really being great for Escape Plan. I guess the bringing together of cinematic and action legends still means something in some areas of the world.

Deadline:

" Directed by Mikael Håfström with screenplay and story by Miles Chapman with credited scripter Arnell Jesko, movie cost around $50 million because it was shot in Louisiana where there are hefty tax incentives. Summit claims limited financial exposure because it had many international presales and licensings and because Emmett/Furla was in for about 1/3 of the budget."

To be honest, Finke probably just looked up the IMDB "estimated" budget (which states $50m). Journalism isn't her strong point.

It's somewhere between $50m and $70m.

Louisiana tax incentives are keeping the mid-tier action movie alive. ;)

Not really. A lot of them are being filmed there, sure, but I imagine mid-tier action movies don't get huge budgets nowadays anyway, and would probably clear a profit with or without the incentive (just like Escape Plan will do).

Opened at...

#1: Taiwan, Malaysia, UAE, Thailand, Lebanon = 5
#2: Ukraine, Russia, Italian Switzerland = 3
#3: UK, Philippines, Croatia, Lithuania = 4
#4: Bolivia, Slovenia = 2
#5: USA, Netherlands, Czech Rep., Slovakia = 4
#6: Brazil, Italy, Denmark = 3
#7:
#8: Colombia = 1
#9:
#10: Mexico = 1

Average opening: #4

So, as you can see, it's opening well in Asian markets, and not so well in European markets. Terrible in South American markets, which doesn't bode well for Spain and Portugal. But it's looking good for Hong Kong, China and Japan. I wish I could find out information regarding its Indian release.

It'll be interesting to see if these trends continue.

Hungary opened #1. Taiwan retained the #1 spot and is nearing $1m.

Internationally, it's the same story as The Expendables. Loyal fans for years and year are coming out to see them. The US is very much a society that likes people one week and then forgets them the next in the search of other hot prospects. Such a small attention span.

Really good news, and it looks like Escape Plan will make its budget back from overseas alone.

Opened at...

#1: Taiwan, Malaysia, UAE, Thailand, Lebanon, Singapore, Hungary = 7
#2: Ukraine, Russia, Italian Switzerland, Portugal = 4
#3: UK, Philippines, Croatia, Lithuania = 4
#4: Bolivia, Slovenia = 2
#5: USA, Netherlands, Czech Rep., Slovakia = 4
#6: Brazil, Italy, Denmark = 3
#7:
#8: Colombia = 1
#9:
#10: Mexico = 1

Average opening: #3.5 (Last week: #4)

Four more great openings in Portugal (#2), Bulgaria (#1), Hungary (#1) and Singapore (#1). Asia is continuing its great openings and grosses, and the holds in Malaysia (gross $2m) and Taiwan (-29% 2nd weekend, now up to $820k) have been great, and now it seems like Europe is following suit - here's hoping that Germany, Spain and France put up some good numbers too.

Greece's previews managed to get it to #10, which is fantastic for when it fully opens next weekend. It's still plummeting in Mexico. I've never seen such a fast decline. But it's up to $5.7m in Russia. I see a total of about $8m there. The Netherlands is proving great for the film with it dipping only 14%, and for such a small country, after 10 days it's at $1m, that's pretty impressive. Sly and Arnie are pretty popular in Holland.

With $46m already, I'd say that worldwide, it's looking at $100m+.

I'm looking forward to seeing how it does in Sweden. The director is Swedish. Could be interesting.

Escape Plan opens in Argentina, Uruguay and Macedonia this weekend, so it will depend on holdovers for a good Intl gross.

But on Monday, it opens in China. So here's hoping for some big $$$ for 4 days until Thor: The Dark World opens. In fact, I think Escape Plan will do fine even when the Nordic demi-God does open. Stallone and Schwarzenegger are considerable draws here (together) as The Expendables and The Expendables 2 showed. I hope it continues.
