Wow. That's pretty awesome, and being on the mainland I haven't heard about this at all. Those pesky gov't official and their controlling of the state media!

Re: HK 6/6: After Earth vs. Hangover 3, who will win?
The Hangover 3 vs. After Earth notes
- After Earth is well ahead of Hangover 3 with morning shows - Hangover 3 has much stronger night shows than After Earth - Theaters tipped the scales in Hangover 3's favor on Friday with more screens or the biggest screen - After Earth has IMAX, which accounts for about 10% of total box office. - If Hangover 3 is to beat After Earth, it will need more of the adult population to win. Hangover 2 had a low multiplier which meant that students/teenagers made up most of its demographic. - M. Night Shyamalan's last 3 films have opened in the $200,000-350,000 range.
Prediction: The Hangover 3 (victor) - $850,000, After Earth - $750,000

Re: HK 6/6: After Earth vs. Hangover 3, who will win?
| Thursday adm. | (so far) | | June 6 |
Rank | Movie | LW | TW | % chg |
1 | The Hangover 3 | -- | 4,587 | -- |
2 | After Earth | -- | 4,253 | -- |
3 | Fast & Furious 6 | 3,122 | 1,265 | -59.5% |
4 | American Dreams in China | 1,492 | 974 | -34.7% |
5 | A Wedding Invitation | -- | 504 | -- |
6 | Pee Mak Phra Khanong | 655 | 457 | -30.2% |
7 | The Great Gatsby | 721 | 385 | -46.6% |
8 | Long Weekend | -- | 263 | -- |
9 | Star Trek Into Darkness | 1,297 | 216 | -83.3% |
10 | Iron Man 3 | 824 | 192 | -76.7% |
Not bad for The Hangover 3. Hangover 3 pulling out an opening day pre-sales victory is good news. It will win this weekend. Hangover 3's pre-sales are -20% from Hangover 2 but it has higher ticket prices to compensate for weaker admissions. After Earth did pretty bad. OK for Fast & Furious 6. Good for American Dreams in China. Terrible for A Wedding Invitation. Very good for Pee Mak Phra Khanong although it will drop harder as the day progresses. The Great Gatsby held up OK. Awful holds for Star Trek 2 and Iron Man 3.

After Earth has leaped ahead of The Hangover 3 in the last few hours. Waiting to see if tonight will be a similar story or if The Hangover 3 triumphs with evening walk-ins.

Re: HK 6/6 THU: After Earth #1 but for how long? Hangover 3
| Thursday | | | June 6 |
Rank | Movie | LW | TW | % chg |
1 | After Earth | -- | 15,957 | -- |
2 | The Hangover 3 | -- | 14,607 | -- |
3 | Fast & Furious 6 | 13,252 | 5,452 | -58.9% |
4 | American Dreams in China | 4,260 | 2,661 | -37.5% |
5 | Pee Mak Phra Khanong | 3,505 | 2,364 | -32.6% |

7 | Long Weekend | -- | 1,067 | -- |
8 | The Great Gatsby | 1,963 | 995 | -49.3% |
9 | Star Trek Into Darkness | 2,702 | 661 | -75.5% |
10 | Iron Man 3 | 1,858 | 513 | -72.4% |
After Earth kept most of the lead it had during the day after all. It's #1 but it is a hollow victory when you consider its opening day is well off of Hancock and MIB 3's opening day admissions. Not to mention that it's flailing domestically. Meanwhile, Hangover 3 had its own problems. It finished in 2nd despite being a sequel, and the #1 film being an original, and it was down 5% from Hangover 2's opening day admissions. Aside from the top 2, Fast & Furious 6 sputtered 59% in its 3rd weekend. Not a bad hold with the amount of competition. Good hold for American Dreams in China. Pretty great for Pee Mak Phra Khanong but I think it's starting to lose its lustre and will continue to fall harder this weekend. Bad for A Wedding Invitation. Disaster for Long Weekend. OK for The Great Gatsby. Star Trek 2 and Iron Man 3 were bound to tumble hard this week. Very poor holds.

Re: HK 6/6 THU: After Earth #1 but for how long? Hangover 3
Hangover 2 vs. Hangover 3 OW Admissions Comparison
| Daily admissions (OW) | | | | |
| Thursday | Friday | Saturday | Sunday | Total |
Hangover 2 | 15,379 | 18,257 | 24,823 | 26,021 | 84,480 |
Hangover 3 | 14,607 | | | | 14,607 |
Gap | -772 | -19,029 | -43,852 | -69,873
Hangover 3 can pull out an OW admissions victory over Hangover 2. If it doesn't, it will still beat Hangover 2 in gross.

7 | 10 | Iron Man 3 | $14,168 | $3,994 | -71.8% | 16 | 43 | $13,611,481 |
After Earth pulled ahead of Hangover 3 for #1 but it will have to contend with Hangover 3's strong Friday. If it can weather the Friday storm, it should be able to come out on top. Hangover 3 is the bridesmaid again although it is up 24% in gross from Hangover 2. Fast & Furious 6 lost a lot of mileage this week with the top 2 openers overpowering everything. 3m will happen next weekend. Pee Mak Phra Khanong and American Dreams in China ended up in a virtual tie. Pee Mak Phra Khanong will pass 1m today while American Dreams in China sleepwalks toward $300,000. American Dreams in China is looking very good while Pee Mak Phra Khanong seems to be losing its shine. I think American Dreams in China will pull ahead of Pee Mak for #4 this weekend. The Great Gatsby did not have any direct competition heading into this weekend but it nearly crashed. It is looking to finish with 1.25m. Long Weekend was a disaster. It should make around $50,000 this weekend. Star Trek Into Darkness got chopped down this weekend but it passed 2m. It'll zip through 2.1m before exiting. People did not care about A Wedding Invitation and its gross will only reach $40,000. Iron Man 3 is quieting down now. It might gross 13.7m but its run will end there. June 6 Thursday Actuals

9 | Long Weekend | -- | 265 | -- | +0.8% |
10 | Iron Man 3 | 1,061 | 194 | -81.7% | +1.0% |
Good increase for Hangover 3. Its Friday pre-sales are -15% from Hangover 2's Friday pre-sales. After Earth had the weakest gain of the top 5. First real bad hold for Fast & Furious 6. Excellent for American Dreams in China. Incredible increase for The Great Gatsby. Pee Mak Phra Khanong is starting to lose the buzz. Terrible for A Wedding Invitation. Really bad for Star Trek 2 and Iron Man 3. Blech for Long Weekend.

Re: HK 6/6 THU: After Earth #1 but for how long? Hangover 3
Looking ahead toward Man of Steel, it will do really well but not as well as Iron Man 3. I think it will do 3.6m OW.
I think it could have done better if they had released it next Wednesday. Next Wednesday is a holiday and distributors love to schedule their films around a holiday but I understand that they want to wait until kids are out of school before they release it. It sucks when studios schedule their tentpole films in early June in North America. It means that HK will get it delayed and then have to suffer some two tier films for a few weeks.
Ticket prices have been released and they are more expensive than The Avengers and Iron Man 3. Wow, WB is going all out for Man of Steel.

Re: HK 6/6 THU: After Earth #1 but for how long? Hangover 3
Big news coming out of Universal. Despicable Me 2 will have special screenings beginning on June 29. FOX certainly won't be pleased by this development. Man of Steel won't be affected very much but of course, Despicable Me 2 will take away slightly from Man of Steel's potential gross.
| Friday | | | | June 7 |
Rank | Movie | LW | TW | WKD % chg | QD % chg |
1 | The Hangover 3 | -- | 18,295 | -- | +25.2% |
2 | After Earth | -- | 17,049 | -- | +6.8% |
3 | Fast & Furious 6 | 17,527 | 6,892 | -60.7% | +26.4% |
4 | American Dreams in China | 5,891 | 3,654 | -38.0% | +37.3% |
5 | Pee Mak Phra Khanong | 4,231 | 2,624 | -38.0% | +11.0% |
6 | The Great Gatsby | 2,777 | 1,632 | -41.2% | +64.0% |
7 | A Wedding Invitation | -- | 1,114 | -- | +2.6% |
8 | Long Weekend | -- | 1,011 | -- | -5.2% |
9 | Star Trek Into Darkness | 3,317 | 937 | -71.8% | +41.8% |
10 | Iron Man 3 | 2,205 | 487 | -77.9% | -5.1% |
Hangover 3 won Friday by a slim margin. The Hangover series has had weak Saturdays & Sundays in the past so if After Earth displays even a standard sci-fi increase, it will win this weekend. That mini increase for After Earth looks really bad compared to the rest. Fast & Furious 6 is slipping into freefall territory. Steady for American Dreams in China. Biggest surprise on Friday was Pee Mak Phra Khanong which saw a sluggish gain. The Great Gatsby had another great Friday increase. Awful for A Wedding Invitation and Long Weekend. Good increase for Star Trek 2 but its weekend hold is anemic. Horrible for Iron Man 3. Most of the top 10 looked torpid. Maybe people are waiting for Man of Steel.

After Earth and Hangover 3 are deadlocked this weekend. Hangover 3 is currently leading Saturday. It will all come down to Sunday.

Close race between the top 2. Now You See Me sneaks are doing good. Fast & Furious 6 is falling apart. Acceptable for American Dreams in China. Not good for The Great Gatsby. Thomas & Friends: Blue Mountain Mystery enters the top 10 after two very slow days in pre-sales. This is Pee Mak's first bad hold. Star Trek 2 crashed this weekend. Ok for So Young special screenings.

Hangover 3 wins a very close day. Let's see where it stands against Hangover 2.
| Daily admissions (OW) | | | | |
| Thursday | Friday | Saturday | Sunday | Total |
Hangover 2 | 15,379 | 18,257 | 24,823 | 26,021 | 84,480 |

Gap | -772 | -734 | 40 | -25,981
Hangover 3 has come back to take the lead over Hangover 2, however, Hangover 2 increased 5% on Sunday. It doesn't look very likely that Hangover 3 will be able to do the same. Pretty bad increase for After Earth. I expected it for Hangover 3 but Hangover 3 managed to do a little better than what I thought. After Earth didn't get a weekend rise. Now You See Me did very well today. WOM seems stellar too. Horrific hold for Fast & Furious 6. OK for American Dreams in China. Pee Mak Phra Khanong is losing steam. So is The Great Gatsby. Painful for Star Trek 2. Massive increase for Thomas and Friends: Blue Mountain Mystery. It rose nearly 5x from Friday. Disastrous for Long Weekend.

Re: HK 6/6: Hangover 3 wins in adm. but After Earth #1 in gr
Quite impressive for Now You See Me. I want to see American Dreams in China but it doesn't look like it'll be distributed in the US any time soon. Some reviewers from Hong Kong compared it to 3 Idiots" and The Social Network. But I got the impression director Peter Chan was trying to draw a parallel to his own "Peter, Dick, and Hairy" (1993). Think Chan is dreaming his Hong Kong dream in China now.

Hangover 3 and After Earth switch places from Sunday. Weekdays this week will be slightly inflated due to the Wednesday holiday. It looks like the holiday is starting to take effect. Good to very good drops for Fast & Furious 6, American Dreams in China, Pee Mak Phra Khanong and The Great Gatsby. Poor for Long Weekend and A Wedding Invitation. Huge dives for Star Trek Into Darkness and Iron Man 3. Holiday schedules are up and Now You See Me, So Young and Switch will be getting half-full day showtimes, affecting the rest of the field. To accomodate the new films, Hangover 3 is losing a screen, holdovers like The Great Gatsby, Pee Mak Phra Khanong are losing showings or new openers like Long Weekend/A Wedding Invitation gets their showings slashed.

Average for American Dreams in China and Pee Mak Phra Khanong. Huge gains for The Great Gatsby, Star Trek Into Darkness and Iron Man 3. Long Weekend and A Wedding Invitation have not moved an inch from last Thursday.

Decent for The Hangover 3 and After Earth. Strong pre-sales for Now You See Me. Ok for Switch. Wow Thomas & Friends. It beat its Saturday admissions with Wednesday pre-sales. At 3 PM, Now You See Me, After Earth and Hangover 3 are separated by less than 300 admissions. Very close battle between the top 3.

Good for Hangover 3 and After Earth. Incredible for Now You See Me. It will make more than $500,000 combined. Ok for Fast & Furious 6. Average opening for Switch. Nice gain for American Dreams in China. Not great for Pee Mak Phra Khanong. The Great Gatsby saw a huge increase. Disappointing sneaks for So Young. Weak for Thomas & Friends: Blue Mountain Mystery although it rocketed up 650% today.

The top 2 dropping the most from the 4-day suggests weak WOM. Contrast that with Now You See Me which had excellent holiday numbers. Fantastic. OK for Fast & Furious 6. Decent for American Dreams in China and Pee Mak Phra Khanong. Not bad for The Great Gatsby. Good for Star Trek Into Darkness. Ouch for Long Weekend.

HK 6/12 THU: Now You See Me explodes, beats HO3/AE OD; MoS 6

9 | Miracle in Cell No. 7 | -- | 897 | -- |
10 | The Great Gatsby | 995 | 597 | -40.0% |
Now You See Me is breaking out. It actually gained from its holiday admissions and it beat After Earth and Hangover 3's opening day numbers. 1m is assured. It's going to make anywhere from 1.075m-1.2m this weekend. Not a great hold for Hangover 3. It's a better hold than what its WOM suggests but it seems the finale factor is having some pull with people. Terrible for After Earth. It has a rating score of 71% but it has come way down after it pulled a 91% rating from opening day users. Switch lost more than half of its holiday business. Of the 3 films that held sneak previews yesterday, Switch was the biggest loser of them all. Now You See Me increased from its holiday sneaks and So Young was flat. So Young did poorly. Ouch for Fast & Furious 6. It'll pass 3m this weekend. OK for Pee Mak Phra Khanong. Clearly, the distributor is going for one last push to make $10m HK ($1.288m US). It should be able to make it before Man of Steel opens. American Dreams in China suffered a setback with So Young and Switch making the rounds this week. It still held up pretty well with the amount of direct competition. Not good for Miracle in Cell No. 7. The Great Gatsby pulled out another good hold.
| Now You See Me's | Weekend Explosion |

After its exceptional Thursday performance, most theaters have gone ahead and given it 2 screens this weekend. It could go even bigger than my high range of 1.2m. It's slim but if Now You See Me does exceptionally well, it could move 1.3-1.4m this weekend.

The strength of Now You See Me this weekend is remarkable. It will conjure up at least 25,000 admissions today. Hangover 3 and After Earth got abandoned. Switch and So Young are disappointing. American Dreams in China posted the biggest increase of the top 10 but didn't hold that well week to week due to direct competition. Legend No. 17 did fantastic with just 3 showings (which all have sold out) at The GRAND. Disaster for Fast & Furious 6. Pee Mak Phra Khanong is holding OK. Miracle in Cell No. 7 had a small Friday increase. WOM is not bad at the moment.
