Post Re: Japan Box Office (2010); Umizaru 3 Update
Umizaru 3: The Last Message is reportedly tracking at 80% of Bayside Shakedown 3: Set The Guys Loose!'s admissions for the 2day. I don't know if this is an official report from Toho yet, but if it's accurate, 80% would mean approx. 560,000-580,000 admissions.

Using Bayside Shakedown 3's avg. ticket price opening weekend, 570,000 admissions would give Umizaru 3 an opening weekend of Y785m ($9.2m). But, Umizaru 3's avg. ticket price will be higher due to being in 3D (60% of it's screens are 3D), so an opening over Y800m ($9.3m) still looks very likely, with Y900m ($10.5m) still possible if the data reported is correct.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 2010 Charts Updated
This is NOT an update with this weekend's number included.

I was out of town last weekend, and I didn't catch that Eiga and other Japanese sites reported Resident Evil IV's opening weekend without the previews included. I'm guessing this is decided depending on how wide the preview release is for a film because Inception's previews were included, but they were much less, so the Opening Weekend Chart has been edited.

And I have included the Top 20 Opening Weekends of 2010 by Gross in YEN below the USD chart. Soon a Top 20 Films by Gross in YEN will be posted, too.

I have also separated admissions from the Opening Weekend Gross section to create a chart for admissions only below. It makes it easier to edit, and much easier to read this way.

None of the three major chains really matched up after the Top 2, so it's going to be interesting to see the National Rankings in the early morning.

Toy Story 3 being pushed out of the Top 10 at Shikoku though suggests it was indeed hit hard this weekend if You Dance With The Summer (opened with less than $500,000 last weekend, and shouldn't have grossed more than $300,000 this weekend) managed to climb to the 10th spot in it's place.

It didn't lead in Japan (national rankings and numbers are being delayed because of the Monday Holiday) , but that's approx. a 45% drop without previews, and that's quite solid. $40m is definitely happening, and a total in the mid/high 40's is looking very possible.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2010); Weekend Rankings
No National Rankings or numbers yet (hopefully soon), but some numbers that are related to yesterday's holiday (Respect for the Aged Day), the reason everything is delayed, was released:

Quote:
No. of people aged 80 or over tops 8 mil for 1st time in Japan

TOKYO —
The estimated number of elderly aged 80 or older topped the 8 million mark for the first time in Japan as the fast-graying country sees a record-high 23.1% of the population aged 65 or above as of Wednesday, the internal affairs ministry said in a report released Sunday.

The estimated number of elderly aged 65 or older came to 29.44 million, also a record high, by increasing 460,000 from a year earlier, with its ratio among the population of about 127 million up 0.4 percentage point. The estimate was released prior to the Respect-for-the-Aged Day holiday on Monday.

The estimate, based on results of the every-five-years national census in 2005 and the births and deaths since reported to municipalities, is unlikely to be affected by the recent tally that 234,354 people registered as centenarians are unaccounted for across Japan, because it is not based on resident registries, a ministry official said.

Of the total number of the elderly, 12.58 million were men, comprising 20.3% of all men in the population, topping 20% for the first time, and 16.85 million were women, at 25.8% of all women, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said.

Those aged 80 or above have grown about 22 times in number over the past six decades from 370,000 in 1950.

The ratio of people aged 65 or older who still have a job is also on the rise, with 5.65 million at work last year, of whom 3.19 million were employees, including 1.58 million part-timers and other nonregular workers which increased by 620,000 from 2004.

Among households with more than one member, the average savings for those whose heads are 65 or older totaled 23.05 million yen last year, compared with 13.27 million yen for those whose heads are younger.

6. July, The Borrower Arrietty (Toho) - Y895,562,657 (Y1,349,457,140 3day Holiday)
7. Sept., Resident Evil: Afterlife (Sony) - Y698,560,636 (Y1,106,986,776 with previews)
8. July, Inception (WB) - Y685,069,493 (with previews)
9. July, Pokemon 13: Diamond & Pearl Ruler of Illusions: Zoroark (Toho) - Y629,544,583
10. Dec. 09, Up (Disney) - Y627,730,027

Such a huge opening should result in minimum total of Y6b ($70m). It would be higher, but Sept./Oct. aren't the greatest when it comes to legs, but with the legs major 3D releases have shown this year, don't be surprised to see a greater total than that. 60% of Umizaru 3's screens are 3D. Reviews are also great, unlike Bayside Shakedown 3's were.

Yes, the avatar is very ugly!

It was projected before the weekend to rank 10th, but I'm sure it's out with the size of Umizaru 3 and the fact that a movie that opened with less than $500,000 last weekend (and likely no more than $300,000 this weekend) bumped it out of the top 10 at the Shikoku locations.

Like Avatar, and Alice before it, Toy Story likely saw a huge drop with the release of the next big 3D film. It's run is more or less over now though, with a final total of $126m probably.

Umizaru 3, like Avatar, Alice, and Toy Story, will do huge numbers until it too suddenly drops off the charts when Harry Potter opens. It might even remain at No.1 until then. I only see it possibly being knocked from No.1 by Knight and Day on Oct. 9, or maybe Death Game on Oct. 16. After those two, the release schedule looks pretty weak until Potter on the 19th.

The national top 10 and additional numbers should be available any time now, really. I may not be on to post them until tomorrow though.

Umizaru 3 sees a massive opening that I've reported a few times already. The very least it will do from a Y1.43b 3day weekend is Y6b ($70m), but with strong reviews and 3D being as popular as ever, it's surely going to gross more than that. Should be a close race between it and Bayside Shakedown 3. It may even beat BS3 with much less competition during the fall.

Resident Evil 4 sees a solid hold and will gross over $40m.

Mobile Suit Gundam delivers the highest pta, giving Shochiku another hit this month, the first being Beck. Very nice for them. A total in the mid teens looks likely.

Villian has received stellar reviews, and it shows some with it's second weekend drop. Low/mid 20's looks like a good goal to set for it.

Beck is holding strong and may clear $20m before the end of the month. It too is targeting low/mid 20's.

Eat Pray Love has a mediocre opening, under expecations. A total of $5/$6m looks good (or bad).

Flowering Dogwood has one of the biggest drops this weekend, but a total of nearly $30m after 5 weeks is very impressive and already exceeds Toho's projected Y2b ($24m) total.

The Borrower Arrietty sees the best hold in the Top 10 in it's 10th week. A total between $110-$115 million is expected and excellent.

Toy Story 3 suffers it's biggest drop to date by far, losing another large amount of 3D screens. The film will finish with about $126.5 million, when it's run ends on Oct. 1st.

The Karate Kid is nearing the end of it's run, and is going to miss $20m, but after 6 weeks in the Top 10 it's had a great run.

Likely Top 10 Films of 2010

Avatar - $166.4m (excluding the Oct. re-release)
Alice in Wonderland - $135.1m
Toy Story 3 - $126.5m
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I - $120-125m (could be higher)
The Borrower Arrietty - $110-$115m
Bayside Shakedown 3: Set The Guys Loose! - $87m
Umizaru 3: The Last Message - $75-85m (again, could be higher)
One Piece Film Strong World - $56.8m
Up - $54.3m
Pokemon 13 Diamond & Pearl Ruler of Illusions: Zoroark - $48.5m

Easily the biggest Top 10 ever, with 5 $100m+ films (maybe even 6, Umizaru could reach the mark with a slightly better than average fall multiplier), and 6/10 are 3D releases.

what about TRON Legacy, it seems Japan is not awakening interest in this film,
on the other hand Narnia 2 wasn't as big as the first one (57m+ BOM), I guess the 3rd part doesn't have the chance to reach the 40 m

Tron and Narnia are both Dec. releases, as is Space Battleship Yamato which would definitely make the Top 10 list above.

Dec. releases in Japan count toward the following year because the Box Office Calendar is Dec.-Nov.

Corpse is there a chance that Arrietty will take over Avatar in admissions? I remember that it will be playing for quite sometime and it is still just 65 days old.

Is Avatar: Special Edition releasing in Japan sometime ?

Nah, Arrietty will top out with about 7.6/7.7 million admissions.

And yes, on Oct. 16th. As to what to expect from it at the box office... don't expect too much. Three (Umizaru 3, Legend of the Guardians, Red Requiem) 3D releases will be out before that date, with two others (Saw VII, Despicable Me) just two weeks after, followed by two more (Battle Royale re-release, Harry Potter 7) two weeks after that. :zonks:
