that's 4.4m Mon.-Thurs.

is that a good hold?

can it have $115m total by Sunday? meaning, $130m is still in play?

It was at $110.6m as of last weekend (44 days in release) if the most recent exchange rate was used (it's been changing so drastically day by day this past month no source has the exact same USD total for the weekend gross or overall total). I always use the most recent exchange rate when I update the charts. Variety/THR had TS3 at $106.6m on Sunday, BOM had $107.5m on Tuesday, and Variety had $109m on Wednesday. Variety's was the closest using Monday's exchange rate. So you can see how much it's changing day by day.

It's a tough number to discuss because they didn't list the Yen total or exchange rate used. It grossed $110.6m after Sunday, day 44, grossing Y9.32 billion.

August 21-22
今 先 週末 累計 screens 週 題
1 - 399,212,465 *,399,212,465 310 1 ハナミズキ

0 6 *86,600,254 *,622,057,398 328 2 魔法使いの弟子

After that, it just depends on what exchange rate sites use when reporting a USD total. The yen total hasn't been reported this week yet.

In any case, $115m is about where it should be after this Sunday, Day 51, because the exchange rate has finally settled a bit (it went crazy from Sun-Wed). It then has 1 more weekend before Resident Evil IV comes out on 9/10 which will take some 3D screens, and then Toho will release possible $100m contender, Umizaru 3 in 3D, on 9/18 probably taking the majority of what TS3 has left, and TS3 is only playing in 3D. $130m is going to be very tough.

The official website for Keita Amemiya‘s Garo the Movie 3D: Red Requiem has been updated with a full trailer featuring lots of action and copious use of CGI. There is a 1-second flash of frontal nudity, so those at work may want to avoid the 1:15 mark. The rest is safe.

The film is a spin-off of Amemiya’s 2005 tokusatsu television series, but boasts a bigger budget and better production values across the board. In the film version, a new character named Rekka, played by Mary Matsuyama, plays a central role along with the usual protagonist, Kouga Saejima (Ryosei Konishi).

The story involves a group called the Makai Knights who have secretly defended humanity for centuries by fighting demonic manifestations called “Horrors”. Chief among them is Kouga Saejima, a knight who holds the title of Garo and has the ability to transform into an incredibly powerful golden armored warrior for a short period of time. However, as long as there is wickedness in the world, there will always be more Horrors to purge. When seven new “Apostle Horrors” descend into the terrestrial world, Kouga accepts a mission to hunt down and exterminate them. A few days later, their trail leads Kouga to a port town where he happens to cross paths with Makai Priests Akaza (Yosuke Saito), Shiguto (Masahiro Kuranuki), and Rekka. It seems inevitable that the four of them will need to team up to face such a powerful enemy, but Rekka has revenge on her mind, and decides to take the Apostle Horrors on by herself…

“Garo the Movie 3D: Red Requiem” will be released by TFC and Go! Cinema in Japan on October 30, 2010.

Expect several 3D local films in the future.

Hmm, can TS3 catch up to Alice?

Not in Yen. Alice in Wonderland finished with Y11.8 billion. But with the exchange rate much more favorable now than back in the Spring/Early Summer, there is a slim chance in USD. Though TS3 will still need about Y11.5 billion minimum to do so. Y11b looks to be about the maximum (Finding Nemo happened to gross Y11 billion, too) as I suspect it'll disappear from the charts in 3 weeks.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 8/28-29 Weekend Rankings
Possible run:

Now - Y9.9b
After 9 weeks - Y10.3
After 10 weeks - Y10.6 (Resident Evil IV opens taking some TS3 screens, so this total might be generous, impossible to tell at the moment)
After 11 weeks - Y10.8 (Umizaru 3 breaks the all time screen count record and takes the rest of TS3's screens most likely). This weekend also might alter Arrietty's path depending on what Toho decides to do with their holdovers screens with Umizaru 3's huge opening. Bayside Shakedown 3 should be safe since it'll remain on all Toho screens until December.

Right now though,
TS3 is aiming for Y11 billion (or Y11.1 to beat Nemo) ($129m), 7.3m admissions (edging out Alice's admission total)
Arrietty for Y10 billion ($118m), 8.1m admissions
BS3 about Y7.5 billion ($88m), 5.8m admissions

it means that the summer winner will be toy story 3, no doubt of it basing on your prediction

The borrower Arrietty wins the summer (I don't care about $ or yen, I only care about admissions), that's a relief. Let's hope Toho keeps a maximum of screens for it until December!
