Maybe, but that isn't what the thread is about, and no actor is the sole reason that their films open the way they do anyway.

Well then what's the point in doing the thread if it doesn't in some way deduce how much of a draw someone is?

It's stupid to call Fight Club a Helena Bonham Carter #1 opener when the sole reason for the success is Brad Pitt/Edward Norton. The same goes for any other movie she's in, when the sole reason for success is Tim Burton/Johnny Depp or DiCaprio/book/Luhrmann.

The thread is useless if it doesn't at least produce a statistic or measure of a stars' draw.

Will Smith works becuase he usually headlines his own movies. But Bonham Carter is a usless statistic.

There is no objective way of measuring a stars' draw but this thread would be a particularly bad way of doing this. It's always hard to tell exactly how much of the gross is because of star power.

Also, you wouldn't be measuring number 1 openings, but rather stuff like the opening gross, or the maybe the adjusted opening, or the same with the total gross. All of these would be more relevant than the position of the opening which has as much to do with what films open around it rather than the film itself.

But even with stars who headline their films it isn't obvious how much of a draw they are. How much is Independence Day because of Smith as opposed to the big action spectacle? There is no objective answer.

And as to the whole Helena Bonham Carter thing, I considered posting her info, but decided against it for the same reason Algren disagrees with her inclusion.

And as to Will Smith's importance to ID4's success - while he may not have been essential to its success overall, I believe he was essential to its success among black audiences. I don't think it's racist to say this: they mainly came to see Will Smith fight aliens, and if that character had been played by a white guy, a good chunk of them probably wouldn't have shown up.

Helena Bonham Carter is a great example of a person who has turned herself into a viable "name" without having to endure the pressures of always headlining films by herself.

^ I'd agree on that while she is not the reason of a film's big opening she is a good known name. Actually few of my friends like her better than quite a lot of actresses out there and they would see a movie if she was in it with no known actors. Even though I have personally liked her in a handful of movies she does tend to try on different roles, her take is Harry Potter is the most memorable one I remember of the entire villain set.

I started to create a list for Chris Rock, but, if you cut films in which only his voice is featured (such as Dr. Dolittle and the Madagascar trilogy), he has only opened at number one three times. He has relatively minor supporting roles in two of the number-one films, New Jack City and Beverly Hills Ninja, so his only true number-one film is Head of State, which opened to 13 million (18 adjusted) and ended with 38 million (50).

His Adam Sandler led hits, The Longest Yard and the Grown Ups films, all opened at number two. I also notice he has not entirely headlined a film since I Think I Love My Wife in 2007, and I remembered what an enormous dud the pricey Bad Company turned out to be.

Bad Company is a film that I have wanted to watch for a while.
