Post The Flava'd Fif7y: Party Like the 90s (4-1)
I was gonna wait till summer to do another one of these, but fuck it, we aren't doing a whole lot of anything else right now.

Was gonna do a more-appropriate Best of last Decade list, but I feel like the 90s have not been very well represented on my other lists, well mostly just the Pop list which had all of two songs from the decade. So let's take it back to a simpler time. Pre-Coronavirus, pre-9/11, the worst thing we had to worry about was President Clinton cheating on his wife.

One song per artist this time and for an extra twist I will exclude all of the songs that made one of the other lists. These are (in spoilers for those who don't remember - which included myself).

Spoiler: show
Greatest Songs:
9. Closer - Nine Inch Nails
12. Paranoid Android - Radiohead
15. Sure Shot - Beastie Boys
19. Come As You Are - Nirvana
26. Bulls On Parade - Rage Against The Machine
28. Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
31. Wonderwall - Oasis
35. Wish - Nine Inch Nails
38. Enjoy The Silence - Depeche Mode
39. Real Mothaphukkin Gs - Easy-E
48. ATLiens - Outkast
49. Badfish - Sublime

Top of the Pops:
29. All The Smalls Things - Blink-182
45. Praise You - Fatboy Slim

I will begin it Saturday after a little bit more research to make sure I didn't miss anything. Though as usual, if you weren't in my library already then you probably don't belong on any Best Of lists.

Or maybe tomorrow night if I'm bored enough.

Welcome to Earth!

Ok I am here and ready to go. Will I eventually regret the cuts I just made? Probably. Will I try to remember as much 90s stuff as possible to drown those regrets? Also probably.

51. Beyonce gets an extra spot added just for her. This is the prelude to Lemonade, before being cheated on was cool. This is probably Beyonce’s best song, maybe second to Irreplaceable or Crazy In Love, and even though it is billed as Destiny’s Child she gets all of the verses. There was a rumor surrounding this song that always made me laugh, in that DC changed their lineup shortly before the release of the video, but the two members who had been exited did not realize this until it premiered on TRL. “Maybe that’s why she wasn’t returning my calls!”

50. Before you ask, yes, No Tears is the song that Michael Bolton (the other one) is singing at the beginning of Office Space. Which I’ll go ahead and declare as the best film of the 90s right here right now. There’s no hook, Scarface just rips a verse for about two and a half minutes. It’s some gangsta shit as the kids would call it.

49. I forgot that Can I Get A was the theme song for Rush Hour, another great movie from the decade. Luckily I am able to understand the words coming out of Jay-Z’s mouth, and they feature an insecure man who is lashing out at the women who might reject him if he didn’t have any money. Amil comes in with a few good points though, how we gonna get round on your bus pass? Then someone somewhere out there asks “where is Ja” and he shows up, not quite in his debut but the first time he was being introduced to the bigger world of music. Ja agrees with both of them and is cool with it.

48. Self-Esteem is also about emotionally abusive women. I guess that was going around at this point in time. The 90s were so dark and broody. Not like today at all. Even though they’re still going today, The Offspring are just one of those bands that represent the decade so well that I can’t help but think of them in any other way. And they were really popular too! Hitting up TRL and having people scream for them - the good life in the 90s. At least the girl in this song is less than hypothetical and is just using her sexuality as a weapon. If she could use that for the greater good then maybe she could be in the next Charlie’s Angels reboot.

47. Like most people, I first came across Poison during the episode of Scrubs where Turk joins an air band. He’s just so damn talented! I had it downloaded on KaZaa and all that, but it actually until much later that I learned that Bell Biv DeVoe is actually three people rather than just one like Donald Faison’s performance would suggest, the members of New Edition not named Bobby Brown no less. Maybe if I paid more attention to the verses that would have been more obvious, but it’s driving me out of my mind is really all that matters.

46. Smooth was one of the songs that tripped me up, I had always thought of it as an early 2000s jam but Santana did indeed get out it out before the end of 1999. This was Carlos’ return to glory, proving everyone that said he peaked in the 70s wrong. I guess it’s also nice to get Rob Thomas (not the one who created Veronica Mars) on here, as Matchbox 20 had a lot of good stuff that will not be appearing.

45. Even though Justin obviously won the battle of the boy bands (scoring two songs on my top of the pops list), I always preferred the Boys to NSYNC. Maybe it’s because everyone sang in their songs rather than just have two singers and the rest dancers? That doesn’t totally add up, but I Want It That Way is the Peak of this subgenre nonetheless. I’d probably go with Everybody and Larger Than Life before considering Tearin Up My Heart too.

44. Coolio will probably be upset with me, but I find these two songs inseparable. Whether you are gangsta or amish this beat just slays every time. It’s very creepy, like a horror movie theme, one where you have to look over your shoulder every time you take a step. A very serious song about escaping a life of crime and a very silly song playfully poking fun at a group of already misunderstood people. Though they were probably mostly ignored before this song came out, and Kingpin probably didn’t help matters.

43. The Chemical Brothers were way ahead of their time, they’d be headlining the Coachella’s that aren’t cancelled all the time in today’s age. Though you could argue that without them the modern techno scene wouldn’t even exist. Block Rockin Beats is about getting hyped, just the same as any rock song. You don’t need the CPU of a robot to understand that or get down with it. Also, if you’re hearing this for the first time and are like hey I like this alot then good news, there is more where that came from, the version of this song on the album is about two minutes longer!

42. 90s hip-hop is known for redirecting the anger of street life into powerful productions. A Tribe Called Quest just wanna kick it here though. It is a very soothing song that relaxes the body and soul, yet also makes you bob your head up and down to that smooth and sexy beat. This is the type of mood we need everywhere right about now. Unfortunately, when asked if we can kick it we are now encouraged to say I’d prefer not to for the good of the world! I wonder if Tribe has an answer for this? They did play the SNL after Trump got elected and totally killed.

41. Been Caught Stealing is probably the best use of barks in a song ever, beating out various DMX songs to earn it’s place here on the 90s list. It also makes me laugh because I think about the Richard Cheese version where the dogs actually chase him off the stage. The song itself is also a ton of fun outside of the dogs too. Clearly inspired by Red Hot Chili Peppers (a good choice) , Jane’s Addiction had a solid run there in the early 90s, before the Grunge boom hit and rockers still wanted to get funky with kleptomaniac women. I’m a little worried that some people who want something and don’t wanna pay for it might turn up at my door if things continue to get worse - why should I be punished for being prepared?

More tomorrow night. I can pretend like I'm doing real work.

I'll also have to do an albums list on the main site to make it up to the people cut off here.

Solid start. Might be a bit low for Smooth. Tribe's best song is We Got the Jazz imo
