 Is this sexism?
When a man says to a woman "Today you are wearing a nice dress".
Nothing more.....not in a disrespectful tone or so...
I am asking because swiss female politicians started a discussion about sexism and they use examples like that.
To be fair a very known swiss female politician said that there are women that got raped etc...and some women are now complaining about stuff like above.
DISCUSS.

No. But it could be seen as rude if the following words were stressed: " Today you are wearing a nice dress" implying that usually she doesn't wear nice dresses. "Today you are wearing a nice dress" implying that usually she's naked (or basically dresses too tarty). "Today you are wearing a nice dress" implying that usually she wears crap dresses. "Today you are wearing a nice dress" implying that usually she wears multiple dresses.

 Re: Is this sexism?
Part of it depends on who's saying it. A boss saying it to his secretary could be implying her value is her looks instead of her work and it puts uncomfortable pressure on her to keep looking good to live up to what her boss wants. For people on equal standing I guess it's not that bad, though I'm pretty sure in North America the only time the vast majority of straight guys say "Nice dress" is when they're hitting on somebody so it puts the woman in an uncomfortable situation

 Re: Is this sexism?
Depends on the circumstances.
For instance, does the boss also say to male employees "Today you are wearing a nice suit" or are the compliments only geared to the female employees?

 Re: Is this sexism?
Maybe I have to describe the situation a bit more precise.
In that situation
Female politicians in the Swiss Parliament complained about the sexism they face in the Swiss Parliament comming from the male members of the parliament. So there is no "boss-employee" situation here because they have the same level of status or what you want to call it. And I highly doubt that those male members really tried to get a date out of it.
So we have here a 28-year old female parliament member who feels sexually assaulted by "Hey you are wearing a nice dress today" because she thinks those other members judge here only by her looks by saying that.

 Re: Is this sexism?
It really depends on each individual situation. If she's not comfortable with fellow co-workers commenting on her looks/clothes, then yes.

It simply is not sexist at all. This story is just an extreme example of today's PC society and their obsession with finding controversy in everything, especially towards men being misogynous. It will get to the stage where saying "Have a nice day" to a female will also be sexist, and if heard we could be fined. Better just not speak to females at all. But, is that then sexist? It never ends.

Magnus wrote: myself and most others I know compliment attire of males and females all the time in social situations, though these are people who we know already. with strangers, "nice dress" is 99.99% of the time said to hit on someone. Hitting on someone doesn't make it a sexist comment. So it is now sexist to find someone attractive? I would say "nice dress" to any girl in my office, whether I find them attractive or not. I know that all females (besides the one in Switzerland that has an issues with this) would like to hear a compliment on their attire. I think this story is just pathetic. I bet if David Beckham or some hot model said "nice dress", she wouldn't have an issue with it. Stupid bitch.

See? That's a fucking stupid thing to say. "I know that all females would like to hear a compliment on their attire." Fucking what? That's such an "alpha male" thing to say. I guess if you think women want it, it must be true!

 Re: Is this sexism?
Just change it to "that's a nice dress!" Narrowing focus to the garment itself (and thereby separating it from the woman's person/identity in a way) allows you to circumvent any implicit objectification.

 Re: Is this sexism?
Then we get to the "women like it when I talk to them while they're walking in the street to *insert place here*". LOL they probably don't. If they want to talk to you, they will. If they're out in a club and interacting with you, talk to them. I don't want a stranger to come and talk to me randomly hardly ever.

 Re: Is this sexism?
Of course they want to hear it. They're just conditioned not to want it these days, but they definitely like hearing it. Humans wear clothes to look good, and when someone notices, it is nice.
This type of story should just be dismissed for being ridiculous. But, of course, due to its nature and low entry-level, everyone and their dog has an opinion.

There is a world of difference between a comment and rape. You moron.

Totally, man. Totally. Making unwanted comments to women is definitely not the same as rape.

 Re: Is this sexism?
You're the sexist if anyone is. Can't you see that? You're singling out women for special treatment. Are they so fragile that they cannot even take an unwanted comment from another human being? Or are they equal to men, and should just brush it off if they dislike it?

"They"? Oh man. You can't just generalise a whole gender's opinion like that. Don't you know how sexist that is!

If someone says "Today you are wearing a nice dress", while licking their lips, smiling creepily and suggestively raising eyebrows, while stroking themselves in the genital area, that's certainly not okay, heh.
