It's funny to think these roles were once played by real people, whereas if that character was created today, it's CGI.

RIP

Why did R2 even need an actor to play him?

Sad though of course. :tears:

They didn't have cgi in the 70's

But they did have remote-controlled robotics. ;)

He had a fairly impressive CV outside of Star Wars, albeit in small roles (no pun intended). He is in 24 Hour Party People, Amadeus, The Elephant Man, Labyrinth, and, quite memorably, Time Bandits.

Where's the impressiveness? I bet those were all dwarf-related roles. An impressive career for someone so small would be Peter Dinklage, who gets roles not because of his height, but because he's a tremendously good actor. For me, Kenny Baker is in the same league as Verne Troyer, Tony Cox, and Warwick Davis, who only get dwarf roles.

R.I.P.

By the way, he was 81, not 83.

Yeah, I have to say that question crossed my mind too. I guess certain mannerisms were only possible with an actor involved, especially when the first film was made on a much smaller budget than future films. Then you feel like a dick for firing Kenny Baker on Empire Strikes Back.

Empire originally reported 83. They since changed it.

I consider being on those sets and collaborating with those directors impressive. They contribute to the interest of his life story.

Yeah, fair enough.
