The family of boxing legend Muhammad Ali is “prepared for the worst” as the boxing legend has entered a disturbing downward spiral, RadarOnline.com has learned.

Currently hospitalized outside of Phoenix, “Ali is in dire straits and is rapidly deteriorating,” an insider told Radar. “His breathing has become very shallow, requiring tubes.”

“Shallow breathing does not bring enough oxygen into your body,” the source explained. And since Ali, 74, suffers from Parkinson’s, “this exacerbates a number of unfavorable things, including, in his advanced case, fatigue and constipation. The latter is a large intestine issue that negatively impacts the lungs & the skin. Ali no longer feels the touch on the surface of his skin, mosquito bites, or cuts, etc. due to his age. And this is a degenerative situation that can’t be reversed.”
As Radar reported, the boxing great was admitted to the hospital yesterday, due to respiratory issues. “He had an unshakeable cough and they had to bring him to hospital and sedate him,” the source said.

But since then, his prognosis has not improved, and his desperate family members have gathered at his bedside.

“The family feels that even if he somehow survives this setback, he’ll be left in a vegetative state,” said the source. “He can’t stand due to stiffness in the legs. Before this incident, he would sometimes freeze upon standing, like his feet are stuck to the ground. Now he cannot even do that.”

Kind of surprised at the amount of comments in here. Bowie, Rickman and others had loads of comments. I guess #KJSoWhite.

Indeed. He was the full package. Technically proficient (not perfect), and whatever he didn't have in ability (though he had most of it) he made up with showmanship and killing his opponents confidence before the first bell even rang. Ali is the Schwarzenegger of bodybuilding.

The big three sports in this country from 1920-1950 were boxing, horse racing, and baseball probably in that order. By the time of Ali's decline, boxing was being Balkanized by pay per view and competing sanctioning bodies. There was also the growing realization that boxing had a serious dark side in terms of fighters being exploited by getting only pennies on the dollar, and the long term health dangers. I took the cue of Howard Cosell's departure from the sport with death of Kim Duk-koo and started the process of removing myself from the sport. I don't think I have seen a round of boxing since Holyfield-Tyson.

Jordan was the Ali of basketball. Maybe Ali and Ruth were comparable in terms of dominating and transcending the sport, the difference being Ruth's celebrity did not extend far beyond the US, and Ali was globally known and beloved. Nobody else is close.

Pele and Maradona also reached that level.

Uh no. In the 1975-1977 his q rating or penetration rating globally, not exactly sure what it was called, was something like 91%. Only one in ten were unaware of who he was worldwide. It was not until the 1990s when Jordan got something like 93-95%, that it was eclipsed. I don't know if soccer's lack of popularity in the US was the reason Maradona and Pele never reached those heights. Even when Pele came to the Cosmos I doubt more than 1/4 or 1/5 Americans had any idea who he was. I doubt more than 1/10 could identify Maradona outside of a World Cup year like 82 or 86. There was no ESPN in the 1970s, and SportCenter didn't really take off until the late 1980s.

I didn't even know the US had a soccer league or NASL's existence until I came to the East Coast in 1978. In my extended family of about 50, I doubt anyone else knew of Pele unless there was a recent story about him coming to the Cosmos or retiring.

So in terms of big celebrity deaths, we have Alan Rickman, David Bowie, Terry Wogan, Ronnie Corbett, Muhammed Ali, Prince, and Garry Shandling, and to a lesser degree; Tony Burton, George Kennedy, David Gest, and Maurice White. Others have died but they are not notable.

And there will be more celebrity deaths before 2016 ends, so it's going to get worse.

I usually go with my wife and her family (from Bolivia) to see if something had impact globally. With the recent deaths of Rickman and Bowie, one or two of her family members knew who they were. Everyone knew who Ali was.

I loved this article on Ali:
