Join us for the announcement of the 12th annual WOKJ Motion Picture Awards.

Can you guys believe that we are doing it for the 12th fucking time? That we were already doing these awards when Lucas released Revenge of the Sith? That we nominated Kill Bill Vol. 2?

Can you remember how we nominated Jamie Foxx for "Best Supporting Actor" for Collateral, thus prompting the creation of the "Category Clarification Thread"? Do you remember the year with seven Best Picture nominees? Yep, it all happened. Some of you have actually voted every single year too.

Thanks everyone for sticking it out, thanks to all the speech writers and presenters, to all of you who sent out reminders. I might organize the awards, but they would not be possible without the support of all of you. Here's to many more years. :)

And now let the show begin.

Best visual effects

Image

Ex Machina

Ex Machina is far and away the most inexpensive of the five nominated films, and it is a testament to digital wizardry on a relatively modest budget. The central character of Ava, an enigmatic and sensual android whose human exterior gives way to exposed machinery, requires a seamless fusing of physical performance and computer-generated imagery. And the intimacy of the drama provides no room to cut a corner or compromise.

Image

Jurassic World

Two decades after the first film revolutionized cinematic F/X, Jurassic World once again unleashes cloned dinosaurs upon a group of humans fighting to survive. Bringing the prehistoric reptiles, both well-established (velociraptors) and newly conceived (Indominus rex), to life requires an interplay of motion capture and flesh simulation, as well as careful consideration of scope and musculature.

Image

Mad Max: Fury Road

George Miller's fourth Mad Max film features his grisliest, most ambitious, and most psychedelic expanse of post-apocalyptic wasteland to date, and the film has received enormous praise for its use of practical F/X in the form of functioning vehicles and intricate on-set choreography and pyrotechnics. However, a significant amount of convincing computer enhancement is also relied upon, particularly to expand the scenery and realize Miller's desire for an otherworldly day-for-night quality during the film's second act.

Image

The Martian

Though every nominated film's F/X team aimed for a degree of realism, invisible F/X were perhaps most important in The Martian, Ridley Scott's "science-fact" adventure film set on Mars. The film cuts between Mars, the Ares III space shuttle, and NASA headquarters in a near-future America. The F/X team's job included the subtle transformation of a Jordanian desert location into the red planet and the rendering of a vast sandstorm, as well as a third-act scene in which the protagonist catapults through space untethered toward potential rescue.

Image

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Perhaps no franchise is more strongly associated with state-of-the-art spectacle in the public imagination than Star Wars, and the F/X team's assignment for the seventh episode included the practical and digital creation of several new aliens, droids (BB-8!), planets, and space vessels, as well as new renderings of the hugely iconic Millennium Falcon and X-wings.

Best art direction

From an opulent and deteriorating manor house built upon an expanse of scarlet clay to the sun-scorched hardware of a nuclear-seared desert. From a storm-swept NASA base on Mars to the hastily constructed cabins and well-used rifles of the American frontier and rounded out with the diverse planets and cultures of a galaxy far, far away. These are the films whose sumptuous and/or realistic props and sets earned them a nomination for best art direction:

I can live with Mad Max winning Art Direction, but VFX should have gone to Star Wars. :grrr:
