 America, WTF?!
http://www.hrw.org/english/docs/2008/08 ... m19655.htmQuote: US: End Beating of Children in Public Schools Abusive, Discriminatory Punishment Undermines Education
(Dallas, August 20, 2008) – More than 200,000 US public school students were punished by beatings during the 2006-2007 school year, Human Rights Watch and the American Civil Liberties Union said in a joint report released today. In the 13 states that corporally punished more than 1,000 students per year, African-American girls were twice as likely to be beaten as their white counterparts.
Every public school needs effective methods of discipline, but beating kids teaches violence and it doesn’t stop bad behavior.
Alice Farmer, Aryeh Neier Fellow at Human Rights Watch and the ACLU, and author of "A Violent Education"
WTF????? omg y'all. Why hasn't this stopped happening? What century is this?

 Re: America, WTF?!
Not surprised. Likely occurs in the Bible belt where corporal punshiment is common (hell I was spanked as a kid...)

Yeah...the bible belt tends to be a good 60 or so years behind the rest of America.

 Re: America, WTF?!
I came close to getting spankings during school many times because I was constantly causing trouble, but it was very, very easy for girls that got into trouble to get out of it. Just start crying and act all sad, and Coach White (yeah, my boyfriend) and Mr. Eggley became big softies. The boys were fucked, though.

 Re: America, WTF?!
Ha ha! I love how they call it beatings instead of spanking or paddeling. Its not like The Rock is taking a baseball bat and bludgening the students. I do not agree at all with any kind of physical abuse for discipline, including spanking. But call it what it is. Its spanking not BEATING.

Ha! This quote is pricless. I bet he stops throwing food now! “He took me into the office and gave me three licks. … He made me hold onto the wall and he paddled me. … It hurt for about two hours, it felt like fire under my butt.†– Matthew S., who was paddled in second grade for throwing food in a school cafeteria in the Mississippi Delta.

 Re: America, WTF?!
Its funny when anyone outside reads anything remotely negative about something in the USA they treat it like its something everyone in America does. Why did the title of the thread not applaud the ACLU or Human Resources for trying to amend the situation. They are also part of the US. Instead just focus on the bad. Way to go! I freakin love this country (and I think we should not allow America bashers to watch our movies. )

I know everyone else lives in a utopia where everything is perfect and nothing is wrong. I have done a little traveling in my days. There is NO place like home.
BTW.. I went to schools that used paddles for punishment. Kids didn't bring guns to school. No one got shot. No one was "injured". And instead of spending time in detention we all actually went to class and learned stuff. I don't necassarily agree with "spankings" but I can't argue with the ultimately positive results.

 Re: America, WTF?!
except the ones giving out the punishments sometimes enjoy it.
and snack, that is a cop out. if something bad happened in the middle of nowhere, like a tourist got ubducted and was tortured by an Australian bushie with no teeth, there would be a national outcry. and the citizen isn't even Australian.

What is wrong with you people?
You're the reason why there are emo kids and little punks in the world. It's because kids aren't brought up to know, when you do something wrong, you'll regret it.

 Re: America, WTF?!
I remember seeing on the local news here about a girl suing her principal for paddling her. She lost the case, because her mother had signed the consent form.

 Re: America, WTF?!
Ya, "beatings" is a bit dramatic, but it is out of place for punishment like that in schools. I DO think though parents should always have that right to and not feel like scum doing it. It really depends on the child though. Spanking might work on one, but timeouts on another.
What do you think is the proper punishment for a kid in school who is being out of hand?

Ya know who needs to be paddled in school?
That little black child who was doing "hood rat things" with his friends.

 Re: America, WTF?!
Sometimes a kids just needs a good spanking. When you've tried time-outs, unplugging the modem, taking away the cell phone, disconnecting the X-box, etc., and the kids still misbehaving sometimes all thats left is a spanking. Parents have been spanking their kids for thousands of years and we've managed to somehow survive as a species just fine. Im not saying its ok to spank your kids because you've had to much to drink or had a bad day at work and need to vent. No, just when it gets to the point where they fail to grasp their place in the heirarchy of things.
