I think it means real polish people that lived in Poland until it was time to emigrate to the UK to work, so they've grown up with zero fashion sense in a cold and culturally withdrawn society and then are thrust into a modern and hip one, and then they stand out like a sore thumb. I would guess that you are not fitting that stereotype. You perhaps have Polish ancestry or something.

Indeed. I don't speak Polish and neither do my parents. But I've had two seperate people guess that I'm Polish because of my accent. Which makes no sense. I don't have a Polish accent.

I've had people guess that my family is from Michigan because of my Michigan accent...

Except I was born and raised in Arizona. (My dad is from Michigan)

It's amazing isn't it? I lived in Missouri from the time I was three until a year and a half ago. Everyone always tells me I have a northern accent. My parents are both from Chicago. They don't really have a Chicago accent but apparently it's enough that I took after them and sound more like I'm from Chicago than Missouri. Quite glad for that though. People in Missouri can't pronounce Missouri right.

Maybe your name gives you away.

Both of those people didn't see my last name before saying that. Otherwise I would have assumed that. The one guy guessed I was Polish immediately when I met him. I had hardly spoken two sentences and he just says you must be Polish. I asked how he knew that. He said my accent. I told him I didn't have one because I don't speak Polish. He said that doesn't matter. Then he said he used to be around a lot of Polish people when he lived in The Netherlands, where he is from. And he also added that I look Polish as well. I asked how I looked Polish and he said my bone structure. So I figured he was just a kooky old man anyway, and then two years later some other guy tells me I sound Polish too. Weird.
