As an alum of the University of Virginia and someone who was heavily involved in Greek life during my time there, I'm upset by how this story, for a time, tarnished the university's reputation (as well as that of the fraternity in question).

I'm upset that this whole debacle may mean that rape allegations on university campuses are not taken seriously going forward.

And further, I'm upset on the principles of journalism. Now that Rolling Stone has officially retracted the original article and outsourced an investigation, it's rather remarkable just how much of a cataclysmic failure of reporting this whole thing was.

Regardless, it's a rather fascinating thing to watch unfold.

And the idea this article will significantly alter how rape charges are received (belief, disbelief, intimidation, and so on) is bogus. Just an idea conjured out of thin air by Greek-"culture" apologists to further chide Rolling Stone for stepping on their entitled toes without covering their bases.

That's awfully dismissive. When I was at UVA, Greek life was extremely important to me, and we all worked hard as a community to protect its integrity and make sure we weren't perpetuating negative stereotypes.

I also don't agree with your claim that a chilling effect coming from this article fail of negating people's responses to rape allegations is about Greek culture "apologists." If anything, the article makes me concerned that victims of rape on campuses will be afraid to report their experiences for fear of backlash/not being believed.

Greek culture is stupid and should go away.

Fear to report was already a major problem due to university politics, Greek-"culture" influence and intimidation, etc. Controversy over Rolling Stone's journalistic process is hardly going to move the needle one way or another.

The journalism was terrible and I feel bad for the guys who were falsely accused. However, the fact that nobody had any problem believing this story was real says a lot about Frat culture.

People have dug up some of Sabrina Erdely's other stories and her previous history of this is hilariously obvious. She should never work in journalism again

The problem is that such journalism failures are hugely damaging.

This gives ammo to people who suggest Rape Culture does not exist.

However it seems to me in these cases the more fantastical the story the more likely it was a victims sexual fantasy then a real crime.

Usually such crimes are nasty and brutish.
