And the Killing one too. Don't kill on that day as opposed to any day...

No killing is understood. That may have to do with butchers and restaurant folks I guess. Also, executions by the state or local govt I'm guessing. Going to the hospital can bring illness if not already confirming it. It's just saying to treat yourself at home.

They make sense to me and they are either got one day or a few months. Big deal.

It's funny because it has "including animals" in brackets which implies its more about killing humans. But yes I understand what they mean by it.

The fact of linking any "action" to an annual outcome is what makes it stupid, nghtvsn. It doesn't matter about the details.

No one takes these seriously. They are meant for conversation starters and mild jokes, or stupids foreigners. ;)

Most of those mentioned are not popular either. I've only heard of the hair washing, the unlucky words, and the sweeping ones. I doubt the "No porridge" one is true because congee is a popular dish on New Year's Day as no one works and shops are closed and people make simple dishes. And the "No needle work" applies to pregnant women but not New Year.

But there is one big "taboo" they are missing there, which is "No quarreling" on the New Year's Day because peace and harmony bring good luck and quarreling disrupts that. So the "tradition" goes, if you want to pick a fight, take it to the third day of the new year because that day is reserved for heated arguments.

I always argue on the 3rd day of the year!

People definitely take taboos seriously in China, dude. For example, the not washing for 1 month after giving birth...it's disgusting and completely useless, but the Chinese keep doing this shit. They're the stupid and uneducated ones, not foreigners.
