Post Movie Actors Quality Assessment
Hi guys. I recently wrote a blog for work. in it I lightheartedly touch on something I've invented called the Movie Actors Quality Assessment:

Quote:
Movie stars are often assessed by their box office totals, which can be misleading in today's world of international markets, NetFlix and On Demand. And, ultimately, what does box office even matter if a film is awful? We need a formula that really sells the quality control associated with any one of Hollywood's leading performers. Under my proposed MAQA (Movies Actors Quality Assessment) formula, determining a movie star's true wattage would best be gauged by the number of times they've been featured in a film nominated for, as an example, Best Picture.

For instance, you may think Brad Pitt is overrated as an actor, but he actually has an impressive MAQA rating of 2.27.

What do you think?!

I think you do have to consider box office at some point, imo.

Sure, a movie can be bad and make a ton of money. But that's rare. Movies make money because people enjoy them. Maybe factor in that actors average movie's multiplier?

But overall I really like the idea. Quite unique.

Yeah, but it's so easy to inflate an actor's value if they've appeared in, say, Transformers.

You could always just use starring roles, and remove their lowest/highest grossing movie to take out the extremes. And you just make box office a smaller part of the equation.

Interesting, but I do think the system is flawed when going towards actors. Isn't all that info for Brad Pitt wrong too? He's definitely appeared in more than 14 films, and 6 years? I think the variables need to be explained much more. Also why use BP nominations and not Actor/Actress nominations, after all we are talking about actor quality.

I think my system would be much less sophisticated, but a better gauge. I would take total number of starring roles as the divider at the end. Then the above number would be (How films have grossed 100+ million domestically adjusted) (How many have been nominated for any Oscar, bodes to the films quality) (How many films are fresh on RT) (How many films have a 8 or higher on IMDB.)

I can see why he's using Best Picture noms in the formula, as a lot of great/good acting goes unnoticed in a highly regarded ensemble film. Maybe take both into account?

It would be a tough formula to devise. Or you could always just keep it simpe because there are so many variables.

Also, limited released films or Indy Darlings as a ratio to mainstream films would help to figure in too.

Yeah, for sure this isn't bulletproof. But is it beyond determining? Lets explore

I personally say no. There are too many non interchangeable factors to do to determine quality. Quality is subjective. One persons Kevin Spacey is another's Tyler Perry.

Wait, click the link and read the entire piece. I'm being satirical.

I know, it's good read. I thought now you were asking whether it was actually possible.

An actor's Box Office success is much more quantifiable than their "quality".
