Post Moving Question...
Good Afternoon ladies and gents!

I currently reside in a 450 sq/ft apartment. And I currently pay $595 for said apartment. My lease is up at the end of October. And I will be getting a 2nd income (fiance) when that happens. I also have two medium/large dogs. I also have a "recent" foreclosure on my credit due to my divorce.

So... Should I think about renting another, larger apartment? A condo? Townhome? Or should I strike while interest rates are low and try to purchase a home?

Thoughts?

A larger apartment is the safest option obviously, if you're not sure of your financial stability, and plus moving in with your fiance into a larger place may seem like too big a step forward this early into the relationship. But if you have financial stability and your relationship is solid, go ahead and get yourself a house...

The fact that you have another fiancée so soon after your divorce is the key indicator here - - RENT!

Still, probably not making the same mistake you made before should be a priority..

It's your life - - but to me, two years seems lightning fast to get into your next "lifelong" relationship.

Post Re: Moving Question...
I recently moved at the beginning of the year and I couldn't be happier. I have a roommate who has been one of my best friends since 7th grade. We moved into an apartment above a local bar. It was a one bedroom but it was pretty big. There was a room off the living room that was big enough for him to have has a bedroom. We were only paying $400 a month and there is a reason for that, place was a dump and I couldn't wait to get the fuck out of there.

When I decided to move in with my boyfriend, we moved into a Town House. I have a full basement, full kitchen, 2 bedrooms, etc. It's quite wonderful. The rent is quite a bit more ($857) but totally worth it. It also came with washer/dryer, dish washer, air conditioner.

I would recommend one if there are nice ones in your area. I've honestly never been happier with a place since I moved out of my parents (this is my fourth place).

Post Re: Moving Question...
I first moved out of my parents in late 2005. And I've lived in 3 apartments (including my current), one rental house and one purchased house.

So I have plenty of experience moving and deciding what to do. But this time just seems different than before because I want to make a smart decision. And imo, renting a house seems like a waste considering what is out there to buy. But I might be forced to.

What's your fiance's position on it? If she's gonna be your sugar mama, maybe you can just move in with her.

In all seriousness I would stay clear of purchasing, and I'd put both your names on the lease. How long are you going to be living together before your wedding?

Well she "moved in" last November when I got the apartment. But it's technically my apartment because she's not on the lease.

So we'll have lived together almost 2 years by the time we get married.

I understood what you wrote, but am wondering why Algren posted that?

Update:

Well it turns out I can't actually be on a loan until April due to the foreclosure. But she will still have the option of buying with a non-occupying co-borrower and transfer that to me in April if she wants. Otherwise, we will have to wait until then.

Update:

Everything sucks. We've decided not to purchase a home, because she wants to eventually move out of state in a few years. I don't know what that has to do with buying a house but whatever. So now we have 35~ days until my lease is up in the tiny apartment, and we're scrambling to find a place to live. We thought we found a place last night, but it turns out it just got rented this past weekend, which we were not made aware of until after applying for it and getting our hopes up. We've looked at a dozen places and most are garbage or don't accept two dogs or are just out of our price range.

For anyone who has rented, when do you normally start looking at new places? A month before?

I found my latest apartment basically 8 days before the 1st of the month, but I was looking for a good 2 months (Depends on your location, but Sept-Nov is the time everyone is looking because no one wants to move during the Winter or Summer). I had a few spots I looked at, and later that day when I would make an offer they were already taken. You want to look for Nov 1st move ins, but it's still not too late for October either.

I actually found great ones through Craigslist, using the map view feature to limit t the location you want to live.

I'd get a move on it though. Having an actual move out deadline of slightly over a month, doesn't give you much time, especially if you want it to be a smooth transition.

What happens if you don't find a place? They call the cops and evict you onto the streets?
