It's got a lot of potential. I'm sure most wouldn't mind packes being delivered to their backyard instead of their front porch.
I do hate that they're referred to as drones, ha.

I can see a lot of automation coming to Santa's chimney service with this type of technology.

UPS, Fedex, Pizza Hut, there is going to be a sea of drones above our head in the next 20 years. Everyone's going to have them.
Delivery companies are going to be like aircraft carriers, they'll drive to where their algorithm tells them to, then they'll deploy the drones, wait for them to return, and go to the next location. The only hurdle to all of this is the FAA, the technology's there, the rules aren't.

To be fair, to carry a 5 lb. package as Amazon predicts, the quadrocopter will likely weigh 7-8x as much, or almost 50 lbs. including payload. There will have to be very strict protocols regarding battery charge before I'm going to believe that people will be happy with the risk of one of these puppies running out of juice and dropping on their heads from 1,000 feet up.

I don't think it's necessary for them to be 1,000 ft up...

Thousands of drones from UPS FEDEX etc isn't happening any time soon.
We got lost packages. Airspace. Threat of falling drones. Who's gonna be controlling these drones. How they gonna drop off packages. People shooting them down.

What if an Amazon drone sees Magnus and becomes conflicted: do I continue to deliver this Bobby Flay cookbook or pursue this enemy combatant?

Re: Amazon plans to use drones for delivery as soon as 2015
Everyone brings up the possibility of theft, but I don't see it as a big issue. First things first, its illegal, and there will likely be federal charges if caught which will deter most. You then put a continuously streaming camera back to the launch vehicle, this way anyone dumb enough to actually attempt this will likely be caught.
Even in the event someone decides this type of theft is their calling, the potential losses are so remote compared to the transportation costs that Amazon and others will happily eat the loss. I'm sure they'll have an insurance policy on items over X.

Regarding the story, this will never happen. Perhaps tests will happen, but it will never be operational.

Re: Amazon plans to use drones for delivery as soon as 2015
How many parcels can a drone carry and distribute to the correct address? One? How many drones will it take to provide the service in a timely manner to many customers?
In your "drone strike" scenario, you make it sound as though your package will be waiting for you when you get home. To accomplish that kind of delivery, they are going to need a massive fleet of drones.
I may be reading something into it that you didn't intend. You make it sound like you will get those jeans for 39 dollars. How on earth will Amazon purchase, maintain, and eventually purchase replacements without charging for delivery.
Methinks that Amazon will end up putting a surcharge on those who want instant delivery. They will have to schedule deliveries as items are ordered. If someone wants a priority service they will pay for it.
What will be the maximum radius for deliveries from the Droneport? How fast will the drones fly? What will be the average time for a drone to return to base after making a delivery?
Who is responsible if the bomb bay doors accidentally open and drop the parcel? Will the drone have the intelligence to know it dropped the parcel and immediately return to base. Or will the drone continue merrily on its way, landing at its destination activating the already opened Bomb bay doors, and then take off like a homing pigeon?

lilmac wrote: How many parcels can a drone carry and distribute to the correct address? One? How many drones will it take to provide the service in a timely manner to many customers? I would guess one box size. So they set a single box size, and if your order fits in that box, you're good.
In your "drone strike" scenario, you make it sound as though your package will be waiting for you when you get home. To accomplish that kind of delivery, they are going to need a massive fleet of drones. I would guess at least a dozen drones per facility.

What will be the maximum radius for deliveries from the Droneport? How fast will the drones fly? What will be the average time for a drone to return to base after making a delivery? Ten miles is what I read. So 20MPH or less, I assume. Probably slightly less time for it takes to deliver.

Or will the drone continue merrily on its way, landing at its destination activating the already opened Bomb bay doors, and then take off like a homing pigeon? Amazon would be. I would think so. Doubtful.

Thanks Chippy! I'm all for it. It's a neat idea. I just think there are some major obstacles that I hope they figure it out in time.
