Re: Typhoon wrecks Phillipines, thousands killed Yeah, this is absolutely catastrophic. Devastating. I was reading somewhere that this was, like, the worst storm EVER recorded. I don't know how scientifically accurate that is but apparently there were 200+ mph winds? Unfathomable.

Re: Typhoon wrecks Phillipines, thousands killed There have been many recordings of over 200mph wind speeds. The highest is well above 300mph. So this one is nothing. Still pretty amazing how a wind speed of only 200mph can kill 10,000 people. Wind does not kill many people.
Epic winds leads to epic storm surge leads to a lot more death.
That is why Hurricane Kartina while hitting at Cat3/4 killed so many.
