People that were catapulted into icon status because of death. Who is your favourite? and who would you say is the biggest icon?

Taken from the world at the peak of their fame, they were made into icons as a result. Mainly this applies to stars that were fairly young when they died.

People like Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson were not included. The former was not an icon in the way that I am using it, and the latter was an icon before his death. His reputation was ruined anyway. I only included people that their death is the reason for them becoming an icon, not just a celebrity or star. And while I think people know who River Phoenix is, he's not exactly an 'icon' in the way that someone like Dean or Monroe are. If you disagree, use the Other option. ;)

Other - Sylvia Plath

Image

From the world of film: Steve McQueen. From the world of music: Ian Curtis of Joy Division or Brian Jones of the Stones.

Never heard of her. She can't be much of an icon in the same way that the poll choices are. Come on, David, I understand that you always want to be different, but choosing this person is crazy. It's clear that I've only chosen the very best, the ones that would be seen as cultural icons. You chosen someone that is probably well known in her area, but is not an icon at all.

I went with Elvis. I just don't really care for the other choices. Bruce Lee and McQueen are incredibly overrated. Monroe is one sexy lass, but so are tons of other girls. Nice rack, though. In many ways she i the perfect woman. But Elvis made some great tunes.

Sylvia Plath is plenty iconic. You are just an uncultured swine. ;)

The Bell Jar is among the most beloved American novels of the 20th century, and her poetry is widely studied and earned her a posthumous Pulitzer. And, of course, Gwyneth Paltrow and Daniel Craig starred in her very own Hollywood biopic.

Yes, I just knew I was adding the 'Other' option for the likes of you.

And it is good you did since so failed to include so many notable options. ;) If I did note vote for Plath, I would have voted for Ian Curtis.

But, again, Sylvia Plath is very famous. Anyone who is even partly engaged with the literary world knows her. You cannot just disregard iconic novelists and poets from the equation because you aren't an avid reader. Plath is as important to American poetry as Tupac is to rap or Bruce Lee to martial-arts cinema.

Well, I searched a lot for dead icons and Plath was in no list that I saw.

You also snubbed Keith Moon and Sid Vicious.

Oh, Algren...

Not icons.

Just well known people that died. No where near iconic status.

Interesting stance.

Deserved or not, I would say Sid Vicious is almost the king of the death-icons. He was not a talented musician nor a very notable songwriter, yet he is arguably the most famous punk-rock musician ever. And he truly flamed out young, whereas Steve McQueen died at the age of 50 and Elvis at the age of 42. (Both, on another note, older than John Lennon, shot dead at the age of 40.)

Fuck. I forgot John Lennon.

Adding now.

Punk rock is such a niche that him being the most famous one ever means nothing.

Do you consider Janis Joplin an apt example?

I hold the term 'icon' in quite a high regard, and I do not use it lightly. If we add every Dick and Harry, the term will be diluted. So I'd rather keep the choices at a few with an 'Other' option for if people disagree, rather than try to squeeze everyone in there.

It amuses me you included Andy Kaufman. ;)

Eccentric supporting player on Taxi turned occasional media curiosity more iconic than a founding member of the Rolling Stones.

He created more than that. Didn't he create The Generation Game etc. etc.?

I believe he has become more famous since his death, which is why I thought he was more appropriate a choice than some rock star.

Are you conflating Kaufman and Chuck Barris?

I voted for Lennon, though.

Perhaps. But I'm sure Kaufman is renowned for something and regarded as a comedy icon now, right?

Yeah, and what about Jesus Christ too?

These are legends. They've moved on from icon status. There has to be some cut-off point.

He is mostly famous for playing Latka on Taxi, at least as far as general audiences are concerned.

I believe he holds a certain cult fascination for Jim Carrey and others because of how he, in a sense, pioneered cringe comedy with his is-this-real-or-an-act? antics, such as his forays into wrestling.

I should lapse into extreme self-parody and chide Algren for forgetting Arthur Rimbaud and Nick Drake.

I think Kaufman is warranted. Next!

Honestly, of the people you excepted and placing literary figures and also personal tastes aside, I believe Janis Joplin is the most egregious omission, at least from an American perspective.
