Dennis Farina, a former Chicago cop who as a popular actor played a cop on "Law & Order," has died.

Lori De Waal, his representative, says Farina died Monday morning in a Scottsdale, Ariz., hospital after suffering a blood clot in his lung. He was 69.

Born Feb. 29, 1944, in Chicago, he was a city police officer before turning to acting in his late 30s.

Farina appeared in films including "Get Shorty," ''Saving Private Ryan" and "Midnight Run."

Among his many TV portrayals was Det. Joe Fontana on "Law & Order." He starred in the 1980s cult favorite, "Crime Story" and most recently was in the HBO drama series "Luck."

Sad news. He was a talented character actor with a very authentic, fun screen presence. I love him as the flustered American mobster in Snatch.

Damn. Fun actor, seemed like a good guy. Just saw him guesting on New Girl a few months ago (and then, ironically, his character died). RIP.

Oh fuck! He was awesome. I'll always remember how he made me laugh so much during Another Stakeout where he eats his ice cream too quickly and gets brain freeze. So funny. It's a shame to lose such a talent.

He is also very cool as Will Graham's FBI superior in Manhunter, the role played by Harvey Keitel in Red Dragon.

It's a great story too, he was a cop for twenty something years. He was brought in as a consultant on a film, and he just kept getting parts. A truly great character actor.
