![]() ![]() Quote: Peter O’Toole, the venerable actor perhaps best known for his title role in “Lawrence of Arabia” 50 years ago, announced on Tuesday that he was retiring from acting. “The heart for it has gone out of me: it won’t come back,” Mr. O’Toole, 79, said in a statement released by a publicist. Mr. O’Toole’s career included playing several key Shakespearean roles including “Hamlet,” and roles in “Goodbye, Mr. Chips,” “The Ruling Class,” “The Stunt Man” and “My Favorite Year,” among many other films. He earned eight Academy Award nominations without winning an Oscar but was given an honorary one in 2003. His achievements “brought me public support, emotional fulfillment and material comfort,” Mr. O’Toole said in his statement. “It has brought me together with fine people, good companions with whom I’ve shared the inevitable lot of all actors: flops and hits,” he said. “However,” he added, “it’s my belief that one should decide for oneself when it is time to end one’s stay.” http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/ ... om-acting/ ![]() ![]() |

Total legend. Lawrence in Arabia, The Lion in Winter, The Ruling Class, The Stunt Man, etc. Bow. This news is not too surprising. He's led a colorful and fast life and is now almost 80. It's clear he's rather frail at this point, so I can't blame him for slowing down and savoring his family and wealth instead of continuing to film small roles in neither-here-nor-there films (such as the recent For Greater Glory). The last decade did bring a few gems: voicing Anton Ego in Ratatouille, for example, or playing Pope Paul III in the second season of The Tudors. And his performance in Venus is wonderful. Might have won him the Oscar had the overall film been a shade more memorable. |

I have to admit, I was never particularly a Peter O'Toole fan - - mind you I haven't seen Lawrence of Arabia yet. Best wishes to the old fellow though! |

And Ernest Borgnine retiring from acting three days ago wasn't even worth a mention in these forums. |
