 Just to be clear...
i haven't sifted thru all of the comments on the BO forum, but do people 'get' WB's choice to not release box-office figures? i think some do, but sometimes i wonder...
it's not out of sensitivity to the victims. it's out of sensitivity to the company. the company doesn't want the figures being released only to be misconstrued in the context of the tragedy
WB doesn't have to release figures. we love the figures as a unique opportunity to track corporate products vis-a-vis corporate profits in real-time. but WB's stakeholders don't care, at least for now. markets don't react to box-office figures (other than LGF, but they're not a big studio). theatres won't freeze purchases of WB's reels. and other film investors have no immediate leverage to walk away from whatever deals they walked into. long-term, this event could adjust expectations across the industry, but the industry is navigating the situation on the fly
the public generally doesn't care about figures, either... in this case, they might if prompted. consider the forecast on Fri morning -- and consider the forthcoming headlines without intervention. "WB makes boatload of cash amidst tragedy." in an OWS-fueled world, these reports damage WB as a socially-responsible company. they'd create demand for automatic profit-sharing with the victims (as some have said it should do anyway) and would require WB to 'clear up' the allegations with more disclosure around film profits (which has its own drawbacks). doesn't matter if the number is $150m or $200m
besides, WB can't count on the media to interpret and report box-office figures correctly. box-office figures are 'filler' items on media (radio, tv, newspapers, mags) and they're not overly analyzed against costs, potential, or tracking. nor should they be -- there isn't widespread public interest
(i think the above is more of a 'water cooler' topic on a box office-geared forum. so pls don't move me)

 Re: Just to be clear...
obama actually put it best....the focus should just be on the victims, nothing else. not the movie, not the gross, and CERTAINLY not the shooter.
the victims & their families deserve all the attention.
