Post subject: | Another earthquake near Sumatra |
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7316846/ Quote: Tsunami alerts follow 8.2 quake near Sumatra Quake is described as aftershock of December temblor BANDA ACEH, Indonesia - A major earthquake struck off the west coast of Indonesia’s Sumatra island late Monday, prompting officials to issue tsunami warnings for as far away as Sri Lanka. Residents of Banda Aceh fled their homes in panic. Like the much larger quake of Dec. 26, Monday's temblor, with a magnitude of 8.2, "has the potential to generate a widely destructive tsunami in the ocean or seas near the earthquake," the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration warned. It advised "immediate action" including "evacuation of coasts within a thousand kilometers (600 miles) of the epicenter and close monitoring to determine the need for evacuation further away." Tsunami warnings were issued in Thailand, Japan and Sri Lanka. Authorities said it could take several hours to know whether the quake had generated a devastating tsunami. I heard several people predict that another one was coming (a few of them here on these forums). Unfortunately, they were right. |

...its wierd how it came the DAY AFTER easter; just like the last one came the DAY AFTER Christmas.....gods wrath perhaps Anyway; i have been watching this on the news since the story broke A spokesman from the British Geological Survey said there was a "high probability" that a tsunami could occur from an earthquake this size. Senior seismologist David Booth said: "The earthquake happened on the same fault line as the Boxing Day tsunami. "It occurred close to the breaking point - the epicentre - of the Boxing Day quake. It could be described as the largest aftershock of this event. "There is a high probability of a tsunami occurring but because the earthquake is of such a shallow depth and is offshore, it would be on a much smaller scale than the Boxing Day disaster." The tsunami warning centre, which recorded the quake as 8.5, said the earthquake could cause a "widely destructive tsunami" and authorities should take "immediate action". However a spokesman added: "Authorities can assume the danger has passed if no tsunami waves are observed in the region near the epicentre within three hours of the earthquake." |
