WILLMAR — A Minneapolis man was sentenced Thursday for possessing stolen military night-vision goggles, which he lent to his father who used them during a 2008 Halloween incident in which he squirted fox urine on teen pranksters.
Thomas Albert Wagar, 25, was convicted in December of a misdemeanor charge of receiving stolen property, which was reduced from a felony level charge, for possessing the goggles. The goggles were used by his father during a Sept. 16, 2008, homecoming incident that included spraying teens with a squirt gun filled with water and fox urine because they had previously vandalized his yard with toilet paper.
Wagar and his father, Scott Edward Wagar, 51, of Willmar, were both charged last January with felony counts for possessing the goggles. But Scott Wagar’s charges connected to the fox urine incident, other than for possessing the stolen goggles, were dismissed in March.
During Thomas Wagar’s sentencing Thursday, the judge chided Wagar for depriving his fellow soldiers of the safety and well-being that could have been provided by the goggles, which he took home from Iraq in 2006 after serving there with the U.S. Marine Corps.
Wagar was sentenced to 30 days in jail, all of which was stayed and $600 in fines and court fees. He also was placed on probation until the time he returns the goggles to the county attorney so that they can be sent back to the Department of Defense.
