Post subject:  What's the point of finals?
Ok, since everyone else is going through this, or just has finished it.

What is the point of finals? I spent 28 hours straight finishing my last paper, and by hour 24 I could barely see straight. I have no clue what I was even writing, and when I tried to re-read and edit my paper there was some serious disconnect between what I was reading and my brain.

Then I passed it in. It was utterly bad, thoughtless, and produced as though the writer was on hard mind-altering substances. What is the point of even doing papers like that? They exhibit marginal if any thought, the biblios are seriously padded without books having actually been closely read (except I try really hard not to pad because I find that crap annoying), and the writer gains nothing from the experience. The professor than has to spend a ton of time reading papers that students mass-produced in the last week of school. Everyone loses! What is the point? :wacko:

Exactly. Its not like the student benefits from the experience and actually learns anything, while the professor is stuck just reading bunches of mass-produced pages with random text all over their surfaces.

Sometimes i really miss the challenge and stimulation of being in full time education... and then i read threads like this, remember the stress, and realise the working world isn't all that bad :)

Depends on yr definition of "finals". If by finals you mean what you posted, I agree, there's not much point. Just give the kids the two or three papers you want them to write on day one and let em turn in three on day end.

But in more than a few of my classes, the "final" meant the second test of the semester. In that sense, it's just like any other test....how much did you learn between midterms and the end. There's nothing wrong with that.

What's even worse is where you only have a final. No midterm. Whole semester grade riding on 5 tests of three hours a pop. Thankfully they're all curved, or so I hope to hell.

19 to be exact. I got a little behind going on business trips around the world. Yes, I'm an idiot for taking 19 units. Yes, there is a possibility I will get all As though.

Finals......never really had a problem with them. Sometimes i used to attend finals when i am drugged. Used to see the answer without reading the question (This happens when you're high, and you know the material well). I ranked 3rd in all my classes; topped by only two students who are now studying at MIT....but i was the dude.

I'm one of those kids that has a prescription, but probably doesn't have the disease. It's a beautiful drug, except when you take it regularly (which I do).

Anyways, I'm in the middle of my finals. Two next week, and then I'm off! But I get what you're saying - and it's even ridiculous when you realize that you're paying $40,000 to receive sub-par grades that put you at a disadvantage compared w/ your peers!

Speaking of which, dolce, or anyone really: I have a Modern Art History final on Wednesday - are any of you familiar with everything from Cassatt to Warhol? I kinda stopped going to that class ( it's for a distribution requirement, and the teacher is a total spaz and reminds me why I kinda didn't "do" the whole abstract thing in HS...:whistle: ) after doing well on everything before Spring Break. Heh. My other final is in Collective Bargaining...oy, oy, oy.

But, I'm looking forward to what could be a great summer:
May 16 - May 18: D.C. (home, catching parties, throwing parties, golfing, shopping, moving back to civilization)
May 19 - May 23: San Juan, PR w/ friends
May 24 - Aug 10: DC, with regular visits to NY because so many of my friends are working there this year (or, otherwise, grew up in that area). I don't know if I'm working yet, but I'm definitely campaigning my butt off for the Dems. and taking classes at GTown (Finance, maybe Linear Algebra -- for Econometrics)
Aug 10 - Aug 20: Europe for the first time ever (I really hope this pans out - I'd be going to Italy or Spain with the fam)
Aug 20 thru December: Costa Rica! For a credit internship, doing a wage analysis project.

Election summers in DC are always fun.

Way to go but holy shit...molecular biological physics?? What the heck do they teach in that??

Can I hire you to tutor me in physics. I need a crash course heh.

Most of my finals this year were pretty reasonable. My stats I actually exempted but it was only about 30% cumulative, got an A in the class so didn't have to take it. Developmental psych. was about 25% cumulative but a lot of new information so it wasn't too bad. And my sociology final was not cumulative at all...also nice.
