Post subject:  WOKJ Movie Awards Eligibility, Category Confusion Discussion

Is Team America eligible for Animated Feature?

Is Jamie Foxx supporting or leading in Collateral?

Is Before Sunset original or adapted?

Discuss such questions here, and so far, here are what I have from people's comments:

1. Both Jamie Foxx and Tom Cruise are considered LEAD in Collateral;
2. Before Sunset is in Adapted Screenplay;
3. Kill Bill Vol 2 is in Original Screenplay;
4. Topher Grace is supporting in In Good Company;
5. Natalie Portman is supporting in Garden State;
6. Julia Roberts and Jude Law are lead in Closer, while Clive Owen and Natalie Portman are supporting;
7. Team America is eligible in Animated Feature;
8. Barbra Streisand is supporting in Meet the Fockers;
9. The Blower's Daughter (Closer) is eligible for Best Song;
10. You can vote a person twice (for different movies) in the same category;
11. The Motorcycle Diaries is in Adapted Screenplay;
12. Paul Bettany is supporting in Dogville.

Thanks, Michael! :D

Okay, just to make it clear to everyone...Jamie Foxx is NOT SUPPORTING in Collateral, he has more screen-time than Cruise!

What about double nominees in one category? Like Natalie Portman for Garden State AND for Closer?

Good idea! :wink:

Me and torrino had an arguement on this earlier, so maybe some of you more intelligent people can clear it up for torrino. :razz: For the movie, In Good Company, does Topher Grace count as a supporting or lead actor?

SOME QUESTIONS ON ELIGIBILITY/AWARDS

This is also the thread to put your questions on eligibility...I'm concerned on a couple:

1. For our purposes, is Before Sunset an Adapted screenplay or an Original screenplay? If this is an adapted screenplay, would this make Kill Bill Vol. 2 an adapted screenplay for similar reasons?
2. Jamie Foxx in Collateral. Supporting or Lead?
3. Topher Grace in In Good Company. Supporting or Lead?
4. Natalie Portman in Garden State. Supporting or Lead?
5. If we want to give Gael Garcia Bernal, Natalie Portman, Jude Law, or another actor in two movies, a nomination, should we (assuming both roles are leads OR supporting roles) give them ONE nomination or TWO nominations?

I'd say Foxx is a Lead and Grace/Portman are both supporting characters who happen to appear in the film as much as a lead character usually does...

You can nominate a person twice in the same category (Foxx in Ray and Collateral, Portman in Garden State and Closer, Yimou in Hero and House of Flying Daggers, Bernal in Bad Education and The Motorcycle Diaries), but you have to use two allocated slots. Don't put "Jamie Foxx (Ray/Collateral)" as one nomination. If you're afraid there will be a vote split because some will vote for one performance, and some the other, then put them both in or choose the more likely one.

I think Grace is supporting, actually. The movie really does orient around Dan, NOT Carter. Alas, I don't care. He'll get snubbed anyways :D

I say:

Natlie Portman be nominated twice. She played two different character. The award is acknowleding her character, not her.

Jamie Foxx is totally, complete,y 100% the lead in Collateral.

Team America is animated.

I think Before Sunset should be original.

Well, another thing to ask ourselves when considering leads is whether there can only be TWO leads. In most movies, this is the case.

I do think Foxx is the lead in Collateral. And Cruise, then, is supporting, even though he DOES have a lot of screen time.

How is Cruise supporting? You can have two lead characters, torrino. If Cruise counts as a supporting actor, then he had to be the best supporting actor ever. He is definently a lead in Collateral.

Cruise is lead as well. Movies can have two leads.

I'd put Tom Cruise as lead as well, and Before Sunset in original screenplay. Portman is supporting in Garden State.

I don't think Topher Grace is supporting. He had an equal amount of movie time as Dennis Quaid, and a huge part of the story.

If Portman is supporting, then Grace is supporting...;)

So are all 4 in Closer supporting? I would put Julia and Jude in lead and Natalie and Clive in supporting.

Author:  torrino [ Mon Jan 31, 2005 7:34 pm ]
Post subject:

Julia and Jude are lead, I'd say.

But, I'm hoping Julia doesn't get a nod. She was the worst part of the movie...

Does that make Tom Cruise Supporting.

And in Closer is Natalie Portman the lead - didn't she have more screen time than Roberts.

And who is the male lead in Closer - Owens or Law? Probably Law still.

Portman probably had about equal screentime with all the other three. The reason Roberts and Law are considered lead is because they are "better known" or whatever. As for Cruise being supporting, that's ridiculous. Just as Foxx isn't supporting. They're both leads, I would say. I think that most categories should stay the same as the Golden Globes and Oscars to avoid confusion, except when an actor definently does not go there. (i.e. Foxx for Collateral)

Whether an actor is being pushed as lead or supporting isn't written in stone. Jamie Foxx is being pushed for supporting because of (a) Tom Cruise's PR consultants, and (b) the academy's rules stipulates that an actor can only be nominated once per catagory. So, since he was a lock for [i]Ray[i], his publicists probably figured that it would be best to push him for supporting. But being pushed doesn't mean that they're only elidgible for that catagory, it's more of suggestion.

And btw, nominating an actor twice for different roles in the SAME movie is just plain absurd.

Supporting.

This may have been addressed already, but are we going drama or comedy for Garden State?

I'd think consider a Garden State a comedy. Best Film is the all inclusive category, and all the films that are eligible for individual genre are also eligible for Best Film, so you can nominate Garden State for both Best Film and Best Comedy, as some will do for Shawn of the Dead and The Incredibles, for example.
