Don't forget the smaller roles in the bigger films, the smaller roles in the smaller films, the bigger roles in the smaller films, and the bigger roles in the bigger films. Although they might not SEEM oscar worthy, these performances played a key role in keeping movies together that otherwise could've flopped...

The most acclaimed female performance of 2004 came from the unintentionally good "13 Going on 30" - a romantic comedy that unveiled TV'S hottest action star as Hollywoods funniest woman.

Jennifer Garner was one of the few actresses in 2004 who had reviews entirely focussing around her, and lifted the comedic project on her own back to global success.

Step aside the oscar pretentions this year, forget those films designed to win the votes and awards, and consider a movie that was truely entertaining, and featured a performance that had Hollywood securing Jennifer Garner as the next Julia Roberts, and moviegoers buzzing about the charismatic star.

I'm going to have to sweat makeshift's style.

I gave 44 films nominees, and Garden State was one of 'em. Including Best Film (*cough* profile *cough*), supporting actress, original screenplay, and best soundtrack). Natalie Portman was the sole girl in my entertainer of the year category (with Eastwood, Stiller, Law, and Will Smith - all of whom, with the exception of Eastwood, have had two+ successes this year).

Maria Full of Grace - Breakthrough Performance, Best Actress, and Best Foreign Film

Closer - Director, Supp. Actor, Supp. Actress, Adapted Screenplay, and Entertainer of the Year (Law/Portman)

I've got enough wacky choices for Best Actor with Will Ferrell (come on. he deserves it ;)), Gael Garcia Bernal, and possibly Topher Grace.

You're kind of right about Best Film, though. Simon Pegg won't get the nod but I can see a couple others casting their vote for Shaun...Shaun sits at #6 as of right now...

However, if everyone, from dolcevita to andaroo, ignore Eternal Sunshine and claim that it's already the fan favorite, it's of course possible that it does get "snubbed". :D

I'm gonna really campaign hard for Shaun. I think that because it's a horror film, a lot of people will overlook it. It's really, truly great though.

Have you seen my rough draft of the ballot yet in the main thread? Looking it over again, i'm probably gonna end up changing quite a bit. I kinda threw it together last night just to get an idea of what I might want.

But im serious, why is it that movie fans & critics have some obligation to vote for all of these actors and actresses that are out for awards anyway? I can't say that regularly understand the Oscars choice in each category every year - especially for acting. The fact that Moulin Rouge was snubbed come oscar time alone ; yet Chicago swept the board really proves that its mostly a crock of shit [Chicago - good. Moulin Rouge - Legendary]

Jennifer's performance in "13" was the only real showing of a female taking a total lead in a movie for the year - mostly unintentionally too. the reviews for her performance in the picture have been better than practically any other female anchored pic of the year - with Million Dollar Baby and Hillary Swank being the other actress i can think of with similar praise. So why not? IMO Kate Winslet was also great btw - as was Eternal Sunshine.

Sure im being bias here, why not? But im not one to deny a great performance or talent when i see it - and it seemed at release time that everyone who watched the film was raving about THE PRESIDENT GARNER in it.

I' guess i just don't rate all these contrived award films which i see critics and movie fans praising as the best things EVER every single year. To the movie going audience who actually sees these Oscar hyped pictures - its rare to find one that is actually entertaining - and this years Oscar nods are possibly some of the most obvious choices yet. Every year i watch a good few "oscar" pics when they come to my multiplex, even more on dvd, but this year ive found 95% of the offerings to look so totally pretentious and dull that id rather NOT go to the theater at all. Wheres As Good as it Gets? Wheres Chocolat? For a year that provided such excellence in blockbusters and comedies, 2004 was not exactly kind to us in dramas or arthouse projects - nearly none appeal to my tastes this year.

Maybe the fact ive not watched many of 2004's oscar favourites makes me cynical of the choices -usually im more receptive to the kind of film, but usually theres some original, distinguishing films there. Aside from Sideways and Eternal Sunshine i cant really see any

Imo, when an actor, actress or director provides entertainment on such a great level, or puts in such amazing amounts of talent or effort, they deserve to be recognised reguardless of the pictures genre or associations. It took Lord of the Rings like $2b before the oscars finally gave it anything.

I congratulate Zing for mentioning Tina Fey in Mean Girls, Will Ferrell in Anchorman, Topher Grace in In Good Company, and MOST of them all, Timothy Olyphant in The Girl Next Door. Girl Next Door was a good teenage film, but Olyphant helped make it great. I loved him in the movie, even more than Elisha Cuthbert... well... okay, I admit that it's true. Don't blame me!

And, Makeshift's campaign for Shaun of the Dead? DEE-lish!

*goes to cry in corner and ponder over why popular kids always get credit*

Anyways, I can't rave more over Olyphant. I'm sure he'll die out in a couple years, but seriously - he was great. His role, esp. in that comedy, was so intense that it almost makes you wonder whether the guy, like his character, is such a hard ass in public. The movie puts him in a light that, had I met him and chatted with him and was then complemented BY him, I'd honestly think it was some plot to take advantage of me.
