"A Costa Rican 'artist' found himself in hot water with the animal protection people in his home country after using a starving, sick street dog as part of an exposition in Managua, Nicaragua, in August. Guillermo "Habacuc" Vargas allegedly found the dog tied up on a street corner in a poor Nicaragua barrio and brought it to the showing. He tied the dog, according to furious animal lovers, in a corner of the salon where it died."

I guess the guy made a sign saying "You Are What You Read" and put it with dog food, not allowing the dog to ever eat it.

What a fucking sicko! This pisses me off. That poor dog. :tears:

Wow! That's way worse than the thousands of children we let starve in the world everyday!!! What a worthy petition.

I signed twice.

Very little pisses me off more than any sort of animal neglect or anything of the sort.

Wait, since when are kids better than dogs all of a sudden? You're either rattled by the suffering of all sentient beings or you shut the fuck up.

Less profanely, I agree.

A starving dog isn't any "better" than a starving child. Anyone/anything starving (especially on purpose on the account of someone else!) is ghastly.

Of course animals are more easily dispensible than humans... It's cruel, but we treat our lives much much more importantly than animals. Who's crying for the cows and chickens getting cut up every day? I'm not advocating animal cruelty mind you, but anyways.

Glad to see that you and the other people who are here and who feel that way are all vegetarians! Welcome aboard the bandwagon!

You can't be upset about animal cruelty without first qualifying that you don't like child abuse and without being a vegetarian? :whaa:

I'm fairly certain that if somebody brought a sick child into a salon and tied it in the corner and refused it food and let it die that everybody would be upset about that. On the plus side, in most places it wouldn't be allowed to get that far before somebody helps the kid out.

As for the vegetarianism... if meat came via slowly starving animals to death in public, I'm guessing there would be a few more vegetarians.

But my main point is these things aren't really related events... everybody is using it as a soapbox to twist it into their ideological views.

Then what are you trying to say? We're all responsible for deaths somehow, we could easily go into poverty and feed starving people somewhere. Living by its very nature is full of uncomfortable truths and in direct contradiction with morality.

You're getting at the point I was trying to make with my earlier sarcasm - - perhaps the artist has deeper motives - - perhaps this art is very profound - - perhaps this art will make a positive difference to dogs and children everywhere, because this artist made us think about bigger issues like " We're all responsible for deaths somehow, we could easily go into poverty and feed starving people somewhere. Living by its very nature is full of uncomfortable truths and in direct contradiction with morality."...

Art matters.

If it was for art's sake, he should have shot the dog in the head.

If you honestly can say you think an animals life is as important as a human's... then you are twisted.

I'm not saying an animals life ISN'T important... but AS important?

I LOVE my dogs, they are like my children. But if I had a child and a dog, and one died, I would be more devastated by my childs death over my dogs.

I think we should sacrifice Munk-E to art. Screw art; let's just sacrifice Munk-E.

How about the death of your dog and some unknown child in Africa?

Is that AS important?

Huh? I thought we were having an interesting discussion on art and ethics. Seriously, in what way do you think I'm being a tool here?

The thousands of dollars it takes to keep a pet dog nowadays, could save the life of a hundred or more children in the third world. It seems relevant to me, in the comparison of the compassion extended towards this unknown dog in Costa Rica versus human life.

The first post you made. Stating the obvious while making the poster above look bad by indirectly attributing a poor point of view.

The whole art debate is fine, please fire away.

Meh

Depends on the human and depends on the animal.
I'd be more devasted, even at Chipmunky's dog's death than a rapist.

Perhaps in that regard you're correct - - I do like the sarcasm a little too much sometimes...

how the hell did a thread about an act of cruelty to an animal turn into the starving children of Africa? It reminds me those people who try to argue against one ban by bringing up extreme examples of what it will lead to. Anyhow its not occuring in the US so theres nothing we can do about it. Theres much much worse animal cruelty done in asia that makes me ashamed of my kind

it happens because for some reason, people can't seem to understand that if you dislike one thing, you're obviously okay with everything else and if you like something, you obviously dislike everything else.

Apparently, i won't have an issue seeing a starving child locked up left to die in the name of art.
