Post The deaths of the UNC Chapel Hill and Auburn students
So, I assume most of you have heard by now about the (apparently unconnected) shooting deaths of the female freshman at Auburn University on Wednesday and the female student body president of UNC Chapel Hill on Thursday.

So, so sad. Really. I have a cousin at UNC Chapel Hill and the whole mood on campus there has just been incredibly downbeat since the news was released. I've visited her there before, and Chapel Hill is such an idyllic, peaceful college town. In some ways, it's hard to imagine this girl's death just being completely random.

I hadn't heard, no. I'd hate to see the teachers out of work, Libs, but I'm all for home schooling being a new standard.

Home schooling being a new standard instead of attending a university?

I assume you're not referring to parents teaching material to their, like, 21-year-old children.

No, my comment was strictly about HS, and since you're a teacher, I said it to you, and I obviously would never want you losing your job.

I personally am against home schooling, and I would be even if I weren't a teacher. I just think the experience of going to school with peers is a necessary and important experience for a student.

yes, but there are all kinds of youth clubs and events that could fill that void just fine.

not so much a student but how to function socially when you get out of school.

Agreed. I've known home schooled kids. In fact, I was one for about 6 months (not enough to make a profound impact on my social skills), and the other kids... I'm sure it works great for some kids, but most just miss out on a huge stage of development.

I don't understand what's so important/front page worthy about two white females being murdered. Please tell me what's the importance. IMO this is just distraction news which I don't give a rip about anymore. There are more pressing things to be drilled into peoples minds during "news" shows today than two white females.

Home schoolers can still have that experience as well. There are home schoolers who are in sports leagues, bands and what not. Besides, children can still get peer interaction (church, sports leagues, community center and so forth) w/o having to be Forced into a government institution like one Nut CA judge is trying to do (his dumb decision will get overturned in the end. Thank god).

I have always hated this attitude.

Like, really. It doesn't make you look classy at all.

The court case in CA saying Homeschooling is Illegal.

The court case where the govt had to concede a mercury based vaccine contributed to a child's autism.

The incursion of Mexican troops into our southern border and firing on our own Border Police.

These are more important, more serious, and more newsworthy than a couple murders. I'm sorry but I'm not gonna get all caught up in the Greta van susteran type of journalism here and obsess over something that isn't that important. There are the occasional murders on my local news and that isn't front page 24/7 news coverage worthy so why these two women. Whatever, why as why it's pointless and I think it shouldn't even be on any primetime (nationwide) or cable news program.

Maybe it's just where I live, but the kids who got homeschooled in my town turned out lonely and depressed. Most people need friends and social interaction. The argument about other youth hangouts or whatever for that to happen is countered by the fact that the homeschooled kids usually get singled out and laughed at as well... homeschooled kids. There's people (like me) who don't need friends, but I'd say the vast vast majority do better with it.
